The Mandalorian SHOW discussion - Spoilers Allowed for all aired episodes

I associate him with The Sarah Silverman Program, although I've seen him in dozens of things since, and probably a handful of things before that as well.  Never watched Just Shoot Me or Big Bang Theory, so I didn't know he was on those.  If he was a regular on Big Bang Theory, I'm sure that that's what a ton of people recognize him for now/

I remember George Lucas and Rick McCallum talked about making a SW live action TV series for years, but I kept picturing it being like that Aussie fan film The Dark Redemption for some reason with cheesy production value and corny acting.

EpII's good, but more like Episode 1, part 2. Could almost be classified as filler apart from that one, kinda predictable moment!

Spoiler

(Baby Yoda using the Force)

Laughed at the Last Crusade and Temple of Doom references and the baby (this time definitely portrayed with a puppet!) is cute as hell.

Saw episode 1 & 2... damn, it’s really good.

A lot of visual and auditory references to the OT. It feels like Star Wars, the Star Wars I grew up with.

What sets it apart of course is the music, which references old (?) western classics, but it fits the concept.

Can’t wait for episode 3!

Edit: That said, this is probably some sober criticism of episode 1 (warning for spoilers).

Wow. Finally got around to watching the first two chapters and I have to say that even though I didn't have set expectations, I'm blown away.

Non-Spoiler Thoughts

They hit everything right on the head. The visuals are superb, the story line has great intrigue and is really beginning to take shape, the music is fantastic (I feel episode 2 is better spotted and mixed), and the characters are very fun. Anyone would naturally be shocked to hear the price tag on this show, but you can see where it all went. Develops a fun atmosphere that's progressive but homely, and has plenty of winks and nods without getting ridiculous fan-servicey. I'm really intrigued to dig into some of the lore that different characters will most likely present in coming episodes. It's probably the most cinematic TV show I've ever seen. Anxiously awaiting episode 3. They've got me sold!

Spoiler Thoughts

Just a few notes, favourite moments, etc.

Spoiler

- I guess the flashing heads thing after the Lucasfilm logo is kind of like a Marvel/DC style intro for the increasingly expanding Star Wars Cinematic Universe.

- great action sequences (bar fight, IG-11 shootout, sandcrawler attack, fighting the mudhorn)

- familiar alien faces (ANH fly spy, laughing monkey lizard, ughnaught, jawas) and new ones too (mudhorn, blurggs, ice creature)

- baby Yoda is just the cutest thing!

- I thought the self-destruct thing with IG-11 was pretty funny. I was surprised how minor a character he ended up being though. Really puts the focus of the show as a whole on the Mandalorian, with guest actors playing characters exclusive to one or two episodes I suppose. Good set-up as far as I'm concerned.

- everything with the jawas was golden, especially when they all stunned him at once

- I love the Western mentality. Very little dialogue from Pascal, some fun cliches and what not.

- Herzog is always a great villain. Very mysterious at this point- what's he got to do with the Empire and why are they after baby Yoda?

- crazy how all of episode 2 was a practically mute bounty hunter and baby Yoda wandering the desert without a working ship, and it was still so good!

- keep the art in the credits coming!

I don't really have anything objectionable to say. This show is a success thus far. Not only am I excited for the rest of it, but also for the potential for the other announced shows. Sure, maybe it's a lot from Disney, but I kid you not, they aren't just messing around here. This is quality stuff.

Is there canon material that says that, or is it just connecting the dots because the only two, now three, characters we've seen like that have been that way?

Spoiler

I'm still interested in why the pirates were keeping/protecting the baby.  It was hinted that he may have healing powers (his continued attempts to touch The Mando after the canyon fight), so maybe that's it.  Or the hopes that if they raise him, he'll be one of them and use his powers to suit their needs?

Who is the mysterious second party who hired the IG droid (who specifically wants the baby killed) when the Empire would prefer it alive?

I'm less curious about why the Empire wants him, since eliminating Force users has been their MO since inception, but this show's placement on the timeline is interesting, since you'd think the Imperial remnant would be licking their wounds rather than funding missions.  Between the Imperial-branded Mandalorian beskar and the creepy Mengele-type guy who insists on having the baby alive, it's clear to see what they were trying to go for here.  Wonder if their planned Force experiments have anything to do with a certain Episode IX resurrection?  Timing-wise, seems a bit weird to have every episode BUT the finale air before TROS, like something may play into that movie in some way.

Overall, I'm really enjoying this so far.  You can tell that the people making this are having a ball, like they're finally able to put the things they adventures they created with their SW action figures onto film - especially in that chase scene midway through part 2.  Even though the tone has been pretty dour across the board, a lot of joy bleeds through.

I can't watch the series because I didn't even get Disney+.  Hopefully something will appear on Youtube someday.

I’m enjoying the breadcrumb trails they’ve started laying down, and I like the overall vibe of the show.

On the subject of breadcrumbs I read this about the series online:

"But we’re also warned that the show could be in danger of adopting the J.J. Abrams mystery box playbook, dropping tantalizing narrative breadcrumbs for the audience to speculate over, using the delayed gratification as a shortcut for building tension"

Which should be a concern for any budding Mandalorian fan here, since we all know how JJ's gimmicky TV hooks historically fail to deliver by the end.

If they're writing this blind, adopting the well worn riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma ploy, it'll irritate me and I'll detect that shit quickly and promptly bail on it.

But for now, I'm willing to give this a trial. It looks quite interesting.

Disney+ is proper tv now. Soon, everything you watch will be party of Disney+. No more Hulu, Netflix, Peacock, CBS All Access.

It will all belong to the Mouse.

Soon all you’ll have to do is buy the Disney Box, hook it up, and bam - easy tv. $120 /month and you get:

ESPN+ - lets you watch two out of network basketball games that you care about every year

Hulu - lets you watch shows with unskippable 90 second ads every 10 minutes. And it’s always the same ad

Disney Music - you can stream any music from any Disney/Marvel/Star Wars/Fox movie. But limited to only two registered devices unless you pay an extra $15 /month for the family plan.

Disney Books - every month you can “rent” a book. Includes classics like Hercules and Cars 5: The Graphic Novel.

this is the future. Embrace it

At least that was I wouldn't have to pay for 5+ streaming services. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do you hear that? It's the sound of Netflix execs crying in despair.

‘Star Wars’: ‘The Mandalorian’ Tops ‘Stranger Things’ & ‘Westworld’ With Demand

Despite the controversy surrounding the Star Wars franchise after The Last Jedi and Solo, The Mandalorian already appears to be among the most popular shows after its first three episodes. Disney finally entered the streaming wars a couple weeks ago with the launch of Disney Plus, with The Mandalorian being at the forefront of the service. This is the first time Star Wars has entered the live-action TV space, where the franchise faces stiff competition with other popular sci-fi shows on streaming like Stranger Things, Doctor Who, Star Trek: Discovery, and Westworld.

Based on Parrot Analytics reported by Forbes, it appears The Mandalorian is already outpacing Stranger Things, Westworld, Doctor Who, and other shows in demand after seven days of its release in the US:

  • 298% ahead of CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery on the 7th day after its Season 2 debut
  • 175% ahead of HBO’s Westworld on the 7th day after its Season 2 debut
  • 72.3% ahead of BBC’s Doctor Who on the 7th day after its Series 11 debut
  • 69.8% ahead of Netflix’s Stranger Things on the 7th day after its Season 2 debut

The Parrot Analytics also showed The Mandalorian ahead of other popular shows in demand after just four days:

  • 58.7% ahead of Amazon Prime Video’s Good Omens
  • 35.8% ahead of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy
  • 15% ahead of Netflix’s When They See Us
  • 11.5% ahead of Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Are you surprised by these numbers? Are you surprised The Mandalorian beat Westworld and Stranger Things? Do you think it’s because of the Star Wars brand? Comment below!

It's a long year between The Mandalorian and the first MCU series, though.  What original stuff will they have between those two things?  Jeff Goldblum and High School Musical aren't gonna bring the subscribers in!

Assuming a weekly schedule, it looks like their first wave of shows will wrap up in January for the most part, with a few exceptions going longer (Marvel's Hero Project would go into early March).

In January and February they have something called Diary of a Female President, and the Clone Wars revival, both of which would taken them into late Spring.

The Monsters Inc show is TBA 2020, as well as a handful of reality shows.  But if their goal is to compete with Netflix in original programming, the announced stuff seems pretty light.

Disney +'s model is different from Netflix, though. Or, rather, is more in line with how Netflix used to operate until a few years ago.

D+ has A LOT of older content, from Star Wars and Marvel movies to their old classics to Fox stuff to years and years of TV shows and cartoons. So, they don't exactly need a ton of original content, just enough that keeps the service being talked about with media-friendly and nerd-friendly shows like these Star Wars and MCU shows.

Netflix, on the other hand, used to be a home where you could find a lot of content, from older stuff from third parties to their original programming. However, over the last few years, these third parties begun to pulling off their content from Netflix in order to build their own streaming services, which in turn left Netflix almost entirely dependent of what they can produce. So that's why they have producing and buying stuff like crazies, from Game of Thrones-ish blockbuster shows like The Witcher to smaller comedies, from new movies by people like Scorsese and Cuarón to Lifetime-style melodramas and teen romcoms.

As D+ doesn't have this necessity, they can focus on producing fewer shows at the time, and giving them a bigger budget. And, if you think older material isn't watched on these streaming services, well, I remember reading somewhere that Friends and The Office used to be some of the most watched stuff on Netflix.

Yeah, episode was pretty good. A lot more, I guess, quiet moments and not my favourite action scenes, but still good.

A few more thoughts...

Spoiler

- those raiders reminded me of orcs

- I bet Mando will not take his helmet off until the season finale, if ever, but he got pretty close

- Baby Yoda went and did so many more darn cute Bay Yoda things (pushing buttons on the ship, drinking soup, spitting out a frog)

- the village had a really nice native feel to it, plus, the planet looked like my backyard (anyone know where that was shot)

- another fly guy coming in at the end for the bounty

- I wish they had led up to the next episode a little differently, perhaps a little more of an idea of where they go now. I guess they don't have to always end with the Crest flying away, but I am curious.

- great developments in the music. Sounded like consistently intriguing output in-show. That Razor Crest rendition at the end! Some nice, really somber and peaceful cues in there.

- I guess they're going into more standalone, single-episode adventures after the opening three episode arch

All in all, it'll probably end up being one of the weaker ones in the season, but I'm very impressed and pleased at the continuous quality output of this show. I'll be tuning in next week with excitement!

I really enjoyed this episode

Spoiler

the twist with the rookie turning out to be cold-blooded was fun, I honestly didn't see it coming. I really enjoyed the way the assassin was played, the constant smile of 'I'm about to kill you' was perfect for her character, and the rookie was very correct to shoot her instead of un-cuffing.

I'm sorry but that's completely Boba Fett at the end there. the sound of the spurs is identical to his walking in the dining room in ESB and the sound of the beeps is the same sound that plays before his introduction in I think the ANH special edition. I paused on the final image and those pants look exactly like Boba's as well, with the cream color/knee-guards and everything.

Lacklustre episode in my opinion.

Next to zero character development. Filoni goes overboard with the references, weighing down the episode in effect. Earlier episodes were perfect in their balance between new and old, but this one falls short. I was a little disappointed with this minor dip in the season, but every show has its highs and lows and I'm confident that things will pick up again as we reach the finale.

Goransson's still aces!

Loved this latest episode.

Reference heavy, but felt like a comfortable homecoming while still showing a bit more of those familiar surroundings.

And I suspect this might also be a deliberately fan-service-y episode before the next one pulls the rug out from under us.

I haven't the faintest clue what's going to happen, but I'm expecting...

Some. Thing.

I don't so much see the way they handled Tattooine as fan-service so much as getting a glimpse of what this planet looks like in a post-ROTJ universe. to me, that was just fascinating world-building seeing how deserted (pardon the pun) everything is now after the fall of the Hutts and the Empire, and little touches like the bartender now being a droid :p

This was a fantastic episode. There's wasn't really much of any character development, but it's more of a "Star Trek-esque" side episode that don't really have too much to do with the rest of the series, at least not that we know of so far. And that's perfectly fine IMO. There were a lot of callbacks, but I enjoyed them. It's okay to have reference-heavy episodes on occasion. The pit droids were the most surprising to me, considering they're from what was once considered to be the "worst" Star Wars film. So it wasn't just OT references, but a bit of prequel references as well.

I loved the episode.  It would have worked as a stand-alone story without ever having seen anything Star Wars before.  The knowledge of the setting only enriched an already great experience!

Earlier episodes have shown battle droids and super battle droids in flashbacks, showing that a character was old enough to have lived through the Clone Wars. This episode also mentions Mos Espa.

Holy shit.

Spoiler

I rewatched that scene with my ear on the speaker. I heard them. Then I jumped to that scene in the movie. I heard them, too. This series is building to a showdown between two titular characters.

I color corrected a lossless still from the last shot and that's not Boba Fett, it's actually just Greef Karga. The boots, pants, and cape all match 100%. I think he also had that spur sound when he walked as well, just as the Mandalorian did, but I can't recall for sure.

Oh man. Definetly a step back up after Chapter 4 and 5, which I thought were just alright. More incredible action and awesome characters. Obviously the show has Western overtones in plot and such, but I'm also reminded of some of my favourite Westerns where characters do everything you subconsciously want them to do even if you don't expect them to do it, in a sense.  Might be vying for my favourite episode so far. Checks off all the boxes!

A few more thoughts (spoilers within):

Spoiler

- I loved Bill Burr and the devil guy! What great characters. It was kind of funny when Satan got crushed by the second pair of doors, and Burr was just a badass.

- not sure how that whole crew survived, but I'm not complaining. I'm willing to bet Mando will run into them in Season 2 or something, which is most welcome.

- the action is still firing on all cylinders- that scene where Mando takes on all the New Republic droids was terrific!

- nice touch with the pure white hallways and then the red lighting at the end

- I had to chuckle when I saw Dave Filoni piloting that X-wing

- music as a bit understated at times but still had its moments. Really heard it when we see that docking port the second time

- not nearly enough Baby Yoda! Joking aside, I thought that his little Force stint was cute, but they're really going for that trope from Chapter 4 when Gina Carano shot that bounty hunter and we thought the bounty hunter had really shot Baby Yoda.

Spoiler

The other two pilots were Deborah Chow and Rick Famuyiwah.  Filoni directed parts 1 and 5, Chow directed parts 3 and 7, and Famuyiwah directed parts 2 and 6.

Since we already got part 8 director’s Taika Waititi’s cameo in part 1, when do you think we’ll see Bryce Dallas Howard (part 4) onscreen?

What's the point of using spoiler boxes when discussing episodes that have already aired? Would anybody open this thread after the latest episode came out before they've seen it?
