  1. 1. Do you own or plan to acquire a UHD Blu-ray capable home cinema system?

    • Yes, I do
    • No, 1080p Blu-ray is good enough.
    • No, I'll miss my 3D Blu-ray too much.
    • No, I've only got 720p capability and it looks mighty fine.
    • No, DVD rulez!
    • No, I'm still rocking a Laserdisc player!
    • No, VHS will return (just look at vinyl)!
    • What's UHD Blu-ray?

Still, something must be wrong, since I've never experienced or even heard of what you are describing.

I don't think anything is "wrong" per se, I just don't like the look of HDR formats/enhancements.

I find that hard to believe that it's you and not the settings.

Well I have it set to THX Cinema, lowered the luminance, brightness and contrast settings, set the colour temperature to Normal, and I still find these HDR characteristics garish. But hey, it's your thing, but not mine.

It still doesn't look like any projected 35mm print that I've seen. And isn't the idea of home theatre tech meant to replicate the look and feel of the actual cinema experience? Why don't they have HDR?

Well, I haven't seen a good theatrical projection for 30 years, and like I said, movie theaters are falling behind with what is possible with TVs now. HDR in theaters exists with Dolby Cinema, If I'm not mistaken.

If HDR works as it's supposed to, then you're not even going to notice it, except that everything is more lifelike, sharper, better.

In most cases it seems to be applied quite tastefully.

Alex just can't believe anyone would be repelled by new image enhancement tech (and there's nothing wrong with my set-up, Alex is just in denial that my preferences are simply different), when we did fine without it for decades and never complained.

To be fair you’re still using optical audio so I’ll side with Alex on this one.

Only because it appears my TV lacks any HDMI terminal labelled as an "output".

Otherwise, I'm using the 7.1 analog outputs from my Oppo player.

As I already told you, HDMI ports are bi-directional

I picked up Doctor Sleep on blu rather than 4K because the directors cut is only on blu.

  • 4 weeks later...

Bought the Sony UBP-X800M2 ...

Only to discover it's not compatible with HDR10+

Sigh ... I'm so tired of these format wars.

Are there any HDR10+ titles yet?

You'd assume a Sony player would be compatible with a playback software that's a format standard now.

Except that Sony is supporting Dolby Vision not HDR10+

No idea. I only have a few titles and it doesn't say anything beyond 'HDR'.

Which titles are these?

Well, 2001 has Dolby Vision. The other two are HDR10.

My TV doesn't have Dolby Vision, only HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. However, I've read Dolby Vision Blu-rays also carry the HDR10 signal. Netflix also supports the two.

I'm arguing with some muthafukka on Facebook who insists the 2016 4K remaster of ID4 is the definitive presentation of the film just because all the reviewers say so. I'm actually bewildered as to how all those reviewers could get it so wrong. Its such a dark, murky, muted and oddly sepia presentation. These are the same people who thought the Godzilla 2014 blu-ray was worth five stars, even though it's one of the worst blu-rays ever released. These blu-ray reviewers are untrustworthy, and people who prop them up have no clue either.

Really, the 2008 blu-ray of ID4 is the best the film has ever looked, it's vivid, dynamic and colour accurate, but if you slap that HDR label on a newer, inferior release, people will swear they think it looks better.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters has Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

Same with The Wizard of Oz and The Shining.

HDR is just the global name for the technique. It can be either HDR10 (+) or Dolby Vision, which are both based on the same HDR technique and yet they are different.
