  1. 1. Do you own or plan to acquire a UHD Blu-ray capable home cinema system?

    • Yes, I do
    • No, 1080p Blu-ray is good enough.
    • No, I'll miss my 3D Blu-ray too much.
    • No, I've only got 720p capability and it looks mighty fine.
    • No, DVD rulez!
    • No, I'm still rocking a Laserdisc player!
    • No, VHS will return (just look at vinyl)!
    • What's UHD Blu-ray?

Got this today and about to start watching. I love this film and can't believe it's 20 years old now. For anyone wondering, this and the US Criterion edii are identical. Both labels collaborated on creating this new transfer.

I have good news- I think

Looks like FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON is being reissued on DVD, in its original form.

Maybe, someone here can confirm this.

I was wrong.

It's still in its mutilated form.

Disgraceful.

Anyone else here own the Jurassic Park 4K disc?

It’s weird that the back says Dolby Vision when, as far as I know, that’s not what’s on there (also evidenced by reviews on

blu-ray.com and thedigitalbits.com).

Anyone else noticed this?

Godfather Trilogy 50th anniversay 4k Blu box set is retailing for $183!!  Good Lord that's 61 bucks per movie!  Anyone who pays that price is a sucker, all physical movie releases come crashing down in price soon after release.

Bet there will be a basic release of this too or something. This price is ludicrous.

Karol

And here it is.... still charging $91!  Obviously one can argue the movies are worth that, and that price would've been normal 20 years ago at the peak of the physical media market, but the reality of the market today is that stores have to sharply discount releases, and usually very soon after release, to sell through their inventory.

Also, that box only contains the new “Coda” of part III. No love for the original cut.

where did you see that info?

It says:

Bonus discs include both the Theatrical and 1991 cuts of THE GODFATHER PART III

It seems people are raving about the new 4K Criterion Citizen Kane.

I'm starting to have a small library of 4K titles. I don't have a player but I have 4K digital versions (that they came with) of all of them. It's annoying when the digital copy doesn't have the same features as the disc. (e.g. Superman doesn't have the theatrical edition with the original sound mix.)

It seems that there are three versions of Godfather Part III:

-the 1991 theatrical release

-the "director's cut" later released on VHS/DVD

-Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone

Thanks, but... THE GODFATHER PT. III was released in 1990, hence my initial confusion.

Theatrical = 1990

1991 = director's cut

Really, seems like its an homage to the original promotion.

That doesn’t make it automatically good!  I think the obvious better choice is him hanging off the lamp-post.

Remind me again:

Is 4k supposed to be equal to 35mm or as close as any format comes?

Thank you for your cooperation citizens!

Kinda but not really.

In theory, Super-35mm resolves 3.2K-2.8K, depending on stock speed and exposure. But if you only look at picture information, it’s a lot less: probably around 2.5K - the rest is grain.

It’s typically scanned at 4-6K for the purposes of oversampling.

I doubt my.45inch screen notices the difference.

It doesn't. Even at 60'' you'd need to sit pretty close to benefit from a 3K-sized image.

The size of the image compared to the grains does make a difference, even on smaller monitors: that's why Nolan's IMAX footage "pops" even in an 1080p copy: out of those 1080p, much less is grain.

I could easily see the difference between DVD and Blu-ray on my 50" Plasma screens but DVD was still okay. Now that I have a 65" OLED, not every Blu-ray looks that great anymore (brand new movies always look good though) and DVD no longer looks okay.

The industry skipped 5K and is going for 8K.

No doubt. I don't think there would be any point of having that kind of set up at home though. 4K is an overkill already. And something tells me there won't be any physical media vehicle for this either.

Could be. It's probably why some say that the biggest difference between standard Blu-ray and Ultra-HD is not the extra resolution but the HDR implementation.

That being said, I'm perfectly happy with standard Blu-ray. I rarely buy 4K discs.

The IMAX footage in DUNKIRK , whether on bluray or streaming, was amazing.

It far surpassed the 70mm theatrical presentation!

Yes, DVD, looks very good at 720p.

You notice the difference on the credits, where the DVD is not nearly as clear.

You can read even the smallest text on BR

I just preordered the 4k blu-ray releases for Jurassic Park and The Lost World, coming out May 10th (the other 3 Jurassic movies I don't care about are getting released too).

I had to look it up because I could have sworn they were already on 4K

It turns out I was right!  They came out in a boxset from 2018, so this must be the premiere of them as separate SKUs?
