  1. 1. Do you own or plan to acquire a UHD Blu-ray capable home cinema system?

    • Yes, I do
    • No, 1080p Blu-ray is good enough.
    • No, I'll miss my 3D Blu-ray too much.
    • No, I've only got 720p capability and it looks mighty fine.
    • No, DVD rulez!
    • No, I'm still rocking a Laserdisc player!
    • No, VHS will return (just look at vinyl)!
    • What's UHD Blu-ray?

Not 4K news but seemed to make more sense to post here than anywhere else.

The 1999 film The Blair Witch Project is getting a 25th anniversary restoration which sounds very interesting.  Read these technical details provided by the directors:

It's not a very good movie

It wasn't very good in 1988 and it still isn't in 2024. That TV show which disappeared from Disney+ existence didn't help either.

How do ya'll prefer watching DVDs to your CRT TVs? Composite? S-Video? Component? Only one of my Trinitrons has a component input, and I plug my LD player into the composite just because LDs were composite encoded anyway. But my LD player is also a DVD player, and has all the big analog outputs, so I can switch around and do A/B/C tests.

I had a big 16:9 Sony Wega that was so heavy, I had to just keep it on the floor. Before the circuit failed, it had one HDMI input and Blu-Rays looked incredible.

Ugh god, pass. I watched it once 20 years ago, but never felt compelled to revisit.

Hee, hee. I saw it in America, in the Summer of '88. I didn't like it.

I watched it again, when it got to the UK, in December, '88. I still didn't like it.

I'd like the chance to revisit it, after all, 36 years is a long time.

The first Batman (and I don't know, perhaps the 2nd one too) have altered sound effects, if you're not into these kinds of things.

I didn't buy them for this reason. I want the original!

You actually want the original 1989 sound mix, for BATMAN?!

Sheesh.

Of course! I'm among the "purists"! :rock2:

I don't want alterations of any kind in the movies I watch.

You should start collecting 35mm prints then. ;)

So the streaming 4K versions of Batman have the original sound mix, which I of course prefer. I'm sure I'll be annoyed. The UHD of Batman Returns is actually worse than the Blu-ray.

Do you watch Jaws in the original Oscar winning mono, or the inferior 5.1 soundtrack?

Honest question: Why is the 5.1 soundtrack inferior to the mono?

I think it may have been tinkered with on subsequent releases, but the original DVD mix was basically rebuilt and mixed by a cracked out SFX addicted Ben Burtt type who seemed to think that because we now had 5 channels of sound, we should cram in as much as we can and change everything around. It was just a barrage of sound FX that were too clean and modern.

I'm selling my Criterion blu-ray because I've heard good words about this new UHD.

Also worth mentioning the dialogue occasionally sounds "robotic", like here:

Tinny/echoey?

So did I. I've never actually seen it before. I know, and enjoy, the music though. Very much looking forward to it.

How would you go about taking screenshots btw? Just for future reference?

You need a pc with a 4K drive.

I was thinking of getting a new external drive. My old one is at the end of its life now. I might get something to play everything. My laptop has a 4K HDR capability too. Any recommendations would be welcome. :)

I have an LG-BU40N Firmware v1.03mk, in Slim Vantec Enclosure, 4K, Ultra HD, UHD Friendly

from this ebay user here:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/225773053863?_skw=LG-BU40N+Firmware+v1.03mkb

I've had it for 2-3 years without any problems.

I use either MPC-HC or VLC (this supports menus), to play my UHDs (and take screenshots).

I think you need to do some settings first though.
