Top 10 Works by Russian Composers

Recommended Posts

Dasvidania tovarichtch, I will pass on this one.

A Top 10 with only Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff would look like I don't know russian composers well... which is exactly the case!

I only put this because I love the work of Russian composers especially from the early 1900s and late 1800s.

Tchaikovsky has always been OK to me. Rimsky Korsakov, Rachamninoff, Prokofiev are all very stunning to me. I love their works. There are also some dark horses like Balakirev's Oriental Fantasy and whoops almost forgot Mussorgsky.

I love the Russians. They make awesome music. I'm just going to go chronologically through some of my favourite composers and name one or two pieces I particularly like from each one:

Glinka - Ruslan and Lyudmila (Overture), Waltz-Fantasy in B Minor

Borodin - Symphony No.2 in B-flat minor, In the Steppes of Centra Asia

Balakirev - Symphony No.1 (particularly the Adagio), Islamey (a.k.a. "If you can't play this, you're not a pro")

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.6, Letter Scene from "Eugene Onegin"

Rimsky-Korsakov - The Tsar's Bride (Overture), Procession of the Nobles (from Mlada)

Liadov - Baba-Yaga

Ippolitov-Ivanov - Caucasian Sketches (particularly No.1)

Glazunov - Symphony No.5 (particularly the Scherzo), Oriental Rhapsody

Scriabin - Poem of Ecstasy, Piano Sonata No.5, Piano Sonata No.9 (I like the Hamelin set the most)

Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.3, The Bells

Medtner - Sonata Romantica, Fairy Tale Op.26 No.1

Myaskovsky - Symphony No.24, Symphony No.6

Stravinsky - Rite of Spring, Le rossignol, Symphony in Three Movements

Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No.3, Symphony No.7 (particularly 4th movement), Alexander Nevsky

Ornstein - Piano Quintet, Wild Men's Dance

Mosolov - Iron Foundry

Khachaturian - Gayaneh

Shostakovich - Symphony No.8, Symphony No.10, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (e.g. Shabby Peasant's Aria, Act 1 Finale etc.)

Shchedrin - Naughty Limericks, Basso Ostinato

Schnittke - Symphony No.1

Kapustin - Piano Sonata No.2, Piano Sonata No.1, (BIG BAND BONUS: Toccata)

Here's a playlist which includes the aforementioned works (apart from the hyperlinked ones which are on Youtube):

I fantasized about using the Apotheosis from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty in my wedding, but she wanted to avoid classical music. It seemed over the top anyway.

The only wedding I've ever been to used a compilation of Shore's Shire material - ironically leaving out the one where it's actually used for the wedding of Sam and Rosie.

The parents were crying in the front because their children were marrying, I was trying not to cry in the back, because Samwise goes with Frodo to Mordor alone and never leaves him, like Gandalf told him.
