Ludwig Goransson's Black Panther (2018)

I really enjoy the score.

I didn't like the film much, however. It was really sub-par and doesn't do the justice to the subjects it tries to address. Sadly. But hey, it didn't hurt it's box office as it is about to pass Titanic domestically. Surprising turn of events actually.

The film was decent Marvel fare. Not exactly great film-making, but a solid 2 hours of entertainment.

The score is good fun, and off the top of my head, probably the best Marvel score.

Many, including myself, disagree on that assessment. To each his own, I guess. Also, not at all surprising regarding the financial success.

This topic is more about the score rather than the film, though.

Film: in-your-face, but I appreciate that it had more to say - and better representation and values - than any other Marvel film (and most centre-stage Hollywood fare).

The score I have been coming back to frequently, it really elevated the movie, has stunning variety seamlessly melded, and is rich enough for a pleasurable and quite catchy listening experience. I am chanting "T'Challa" around the house now.

I am glad the Tchalla chants were kept in the soundtrack as well

And this is a soundtrack where there is almost nothing I'd skip

(maybe one of the 3 tracks after Busan car chase and before Killmongers Challenge)

The only thing that bothers me about this album is this one tiny bit of clipping here that is unfortunately present in the digital downloads and Spotify (as well as Disney promotional releases):

I have to mention "Wakanda" again. Baaba Maal's vocal solo is so iconic to the identity of this film. The scene it accompanies is breathtaking. The visuals of the African landscape are amazing, not to mention when we first enter the city of Wakanda. It functions the same way that Lebo M.'s solo chant opened The Lion King, both film and score. It instantly transports you to Africa. Baaba Maal also gives a reprisal at the end of "A King's Sunset."

I love the percussion throughout the score as well, with special mention to the talking drum solos. I love the main theme. I am also fond of Killmonger's theme; very effective.

Here is a behind-the-scenes video with Ludwig Goransson talking about the process of writing and recording the score:

I also have to mention the choral work in this score. The African chants and choral work are very effective. I love the chorus chanting "T'Challa" in "Warrior Falls", "Waterfall Fight" and "End Credits". Not to mention the chorus in "Wakanda", "Warrior Falls", "Waterfall Fight", "Ancestral Plane" (which I also love the string elegy associated with the ancestors), "Killmonger vs. T'Challa", "Burn It All", "Wake Up T'Challa", "The Great Mound Battle" (personal favorite), "Glory to Bast", and "A King's Sunset" (another favorite).

I also like the choral chanting in "Wakanda Origins", "The Jabari" (although I prefer the way it is in the film), "Casino Brawl", Entering Jabariland", and "The Jabari, Pt. II."

Ludwig Boransson did a good job on the entire score. Really made an impact while enhancing an already phenomenal film. I was already familiar with Boransson due to his phenomenal work on Creed. He did a great job with Black Panther.

I thought the film and score were OK, nothing to write home about. The Killmonger synthesizer beats sound an awful lot like some cheap backing-track loop you could find on an electronic keyboard, it was so bad and distracting in the film.

I liked the score quite a bit. It fit the film well and gave the proper sense of propulsion when needed and emotion when appropriate. There is one theme played several times on strings that is quite effective, something like a theme for regret.

Mondo has announced a 3-disc vinyl release tomorrow, per the notes it's the "complete album"

No track list revealed yet, will have to wait to compare it to the sessions leak.  Wish they would do CD releases as well!  Really want this and Ant-Man & the Wasp extended but don't have a turntable.

Cool!

I wonder how many MCU films will get this treatment

I'd go to concerts for Giacchino's Spidey scores (but I guess those'd be managed by Sony and not Disney)

I’d be very keen to see this. I wonder how’d they handle the electronic elements? The loops and chanting and 808 beats etc. I suppose they’d have a track with those elements pre-recorded and the orchestra just fills in the gaps…

There's no name of a choir group with either the Atlanta Symphony or Minnesota orchestras, so I guess there isn't going to be a live choir. along with the orchestra  If a 'choir' sound is used with this concert, it would be pre-recorded.

A 'Variety' article from Jon Burlingame talks about the 'Black Panther' L2P concert this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl.

'Black Panther' Score to Be Performed at Hollywood Bowl - Varietyhttps://variety.com/2021/artisans/news/black-panther-score-hollywood-bowl-1235057552/

Here are the highlights:

Quote

Baaba Maal — whose voice is heard at critical moments in the score, notably the introduction to Wakanda — has flown in from Senegal. Massamba Diop, the tama (talking drum) master, will perform; and Magatte Saw will lead a group of six sabar drummers in the score. All played on the original recording and, says Göransson, “seeing the energy between them and the orchestra is going to be magical.”

Quote

There is approximately two hours of music in the 134-minute film, so the musicians on stage will be playing most of the time. Choral elements of the score, and the music-production portions, will be played from the original tracks, while the orchestra and soloists will be performing live under the baton of Thomas Wilkins, principal conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

I hear that the Hollywood Bowl does their rehearsals of their concerts for the public for free.  I wonder if one could get in on the rehearsals for that concert.
