I also love just about every shot of The Lonely Mountain in The Desolation of Smaug. Not for the Mountain itself, necessarily, but for the juxtaposition: Be it the Dwarves looking up at it with awe, or Bard turning around to it. The juxtaposition, moreso than the expressions of the actors in those scenes, conveys the necessary emotion, be it longing or a sense of revelation.

This has always been a favorite of mine because it sums up much of what the whole movie is about in a single shot. As Keys looks sympathetically on Elliot, saying that he's dreamed about this (meeting an alien) since he was Elliot's age, we see Elliot's image projected directly onto Keys, making it clear in a very visual and visceral way that Keys sees himself in Elliot. And at the same time, by showing Elliot's reflection on Keys' face, there is also a sense that, if one's child-like imagination is allowed to die (as Elliot is dying), then we end up turning into the purely rational, scientific beings that Keys represents and cutting ourselves off from a vital part of our humanity. I love how Keys' bio suit captures both the scientific aspect and a physical barrier that separates him from Elliot at the same time. Spielberg at his very best.

This is the scene that ignited my love of movies. Watching the blockade runner zipping across the screen, followed by the seemingly never-ending Star Destroyer in pursuit, completely blew my ten-year-old mind when I watched the film for the first time. Instantly you know how futile the rebels' escape is, essentially explaining the entirety of the story in a matter of seconds. Filmmaking at its finest.

It's the one moment of E.T. I don't love. I thought it was unnecessary to establish that this guy had been visited by the creature when he was a boy. Makes it feel a bit less special. It's hard to explain.

But the film's ending alludes to the fact that E.T.'s people had visited Earth before (i.e. the spaceship leaves a rainbow streak in the sky), so I don't see how it's farfetched that Keys had had an encounter as a child.

It’s a very engrossing opening shot: you instantly know who the bad guys and good guys are.

 

But I think we need to distinguish between appreciating a shot, and loving one. It’s not like there’s some high drama going on in that shot....

What’s dramatic about one of the most dramatic and compelling opening shots in cinema history?  That gave people something unlike ANYTHING they’d seen before.That in 1977 grabbed audiences instantly and never let go. For fourty years. Crikey if you don’t think that image with Williams music isn’t drama, I don’t know what to say to you.

A meant drama in the sense of a character-driven drama: Its just an action scene. Its part of the "James Bond opening" of the film.

I've talked about how the opening shot of The Last Jedi breaks the Star Wars mould by not cutting to the fleet but pushing down to it, instead. But, it should be said, George Lucas did a similar thing with this opening: where most Star Wars films would cut from that to something else, Lucas holds this and forms a nice long take (of sorts, because it is just CGI, at the end of the day) at the top of his film: about 1:15 seconds worth.

@Nick1066 is right, @Chen G., but it goes beyond that. Apart from being absolutely spectacular in 70mm, and 6-track stereo, it also had vast, and permanent repercussions for the film industry. To reiterate what Nick said: NOTHING had been seen (nor heard) like it - EVER!

Plus, it's a beautiful shot, to look at.

Which is exactly why I say distinguish between shots (and films) that you appreciate because of the influence they had on the industry, and shots (and films) that you, as an individual moviegoer, like, on the shot's or the film's own right. The two don't have to correlate.

 

Again, I love that shot. Its great that the film not only has an excellent "James Bond" opening, but that it does so with the very first image we see in it. Is it my very favorite shot in all of cinema? probably not.

 They don’t; but in this case they do.

 

And that shot is part of what made the film cinematic history.  That the shot works so well in the film “in it own right” is the whole point.

 

And I’m not sure the James Bond opening is a good analogy. Bond openings are impressive because of the whole pre credits sequence. We’re just talking about a single opening shot.

Its not a comparison; its a colloquial term for big spectacle openings, regardless of the specifics of how they're constructed. In Star Wars, that opening image is but a part of what is an entire opening "James Bond" action sequence (and a very good one!), so that we remain engaged throughout the long first act (43 minutes!).

 

It also happens in The Phantom Menace, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. It happens in every Indiana Jones film. It happens in Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, An Unexpected Journey and The Battle of the Five Armies. It happens in every Avengers movie (including this recent one, I'm told) - its a staple of large-scale films, regardless of franchise.

 

The idea being that instead of the convention of gradually rising tension throughout the three acts, there's a big "spike" early in the first act: An action sequence that: a) serves as a "hook" that pulls the audience into the film; b) promises more such spectacle once the first act concludes; c) sets up the villain and main conflict; d) acts as a short-film of sorts that gives the audience at least a temporary sense of satisfaction with the film they're watching, already within the opening couple of minutes.

 

Regardless, opening with a strong, unique image is always a requirement in good filmmaking: its usually in the script. One aims to close with a strong image, as well.

Nah, I like those, and I think they're good movies, and I can back it up. The James Bond openings not being the least of my reasons, for instance.

 

Attack of the Clones, on the other hand...

 

It might be the worst entry not just in Star Wars, but in any big franchise of this kind. And the overall impression of the film is so poor that the occasional good shot or scene are drowned in it.

Mate, there's no backing up liking or disliking a film. If you like it, that's it. Your liking it is all you need. No one can dispute whether you like a film or not. De gustibus non est disputandum.
