Popular Post Omen II 1,235
Yes, it does seem to me very unlikely that they would have been unable to secure a replacement conductor familiar with John Williams's music at, what, ten days' notice? There are numerous conductors just in the UK alone who are excellent interpreters of his music who would have cleared their diaries and absolutely bitten the VPO's hands off at the prospect of conducting the orchestra at the Musikverein. Major orchestras find replacement conductors and performers all the time when the billed musicians are incapacitated, often with very little notice. Far more likely to my mind is that either John Williams did not want anyone else 'stealing his thunder' (which is perfectly understandable, I am sure I would be the same) by getting in on his special gig and / or that the Vienna Philharmonic did not want to give just any random conductor the honour of being the first person to conduct a whole programme of John Williams at a venue as prestigious as the Musikverein. Just my two pennyworth. Jurassic Shark, Taikomochi, Maglorfin and 4 others

Popular Post TownerFan 4,983
All things considered, it ended up being a very nice weekend with my fiancée touring the city and catching up with several film music friends. Yesterday afternoon, we gathered at the Max Steiner Bar in the Hotel Wien near the Prater. The meeting was set up by Mikael Carlsson (great guy). Me, Ilaria, Miguel and Peio stayed for a couple of hours chatting and having fun together. An Italian friend also joined. Later in the evening I met with Marian and Peio for a beer in a pub near Karlsplatz. The city is great and a wonderful place for music and art lovers. Today I also stopped by to see the Musikverein and signed the “Cancelled” card on the wall—it was a truly lovely thing to see. As it’s been already reported, Williams wants to reschedule the concert next year as he’s really looking forward to conduct the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Musikverein. Let’s hope this was the most unique “hurry up and wait” of music history 😊 All in all, it was a great weekend. Now heading to the airport to fly back home. spanosd 3
Although I had the choice to cancel the whole trip to Vienna without really losing any money (refundable flights and hotel), I decided to go anyway and boy, did I NOT regret it. What a beautiful city! I took the guided tour on Wednesday. The guide was young (like 30 years old) and was very strict on taking photos, he wouldn't let us! I'm surprised some of you managed to take they, you're so lucky. Except if you did it when the guide was not looking 😉 On topic: I asked a very kind gentleman that was working in the Musikverein regarding the concert. He explained that the reason the concert was cancelled, was that the tickets were way too expensive and people paid all this money to see Williams conduct, not another conductor. Many would be very upset and demand a refund. I asked him about the reschedule and he had no idea. He gave me the number of the Vienna Philharmonic, in case they had more info. Popular Post rough cut 1,714
I was at the same tour as @St0rMl0rD, I think. He already gave a short statement about why they cancelled which I enterpreted as partially correct. During the tour, I asked whether it was frowned upon to have a “film score” composer guest the hall, as opposed to the traditional, classical composers - and if the classical community had reacted negatively. She didn’t really answer the question - which in itself might be an answer! Instead, the way our guide explained it - who had been working with Musikverein for 20 years! - was that when the VPO now was to do a full film music concert, entirely of JW music, they wanted to do it with JW as the conductor and noone else. She said that, although the VPO can play anything, a concert with film music was new territory for them. She said the orchestra wasn’t used to playing that kind of music and that it was important to get it right. And having the right conductor - in this case, also the composer - who knows the music intimately was part of getting it right. They wanted to do it with Williams or not at all. Take from that, what you will. She also mentioned that negotiations for the “European tour” began 2 years ago, in Los Angeles, when the VPO was on a world tour. They then met Williams who stated it was his dream to conduct the VPO, in their own hall, in Vienna. The VPO management then reached out to JW and started looking for a date, which was apparently a bit of a hassle since both JW and the VPO have very busy schedules and very few days blank in the calendar. From this you can also surmise what was booked first - London or Vienna. ; ) Edit: Nope, me and @St0rMl0rD were not on the same tour, but might’ve had the same guide, which might explain why I didn’t wholly agree with his previous post. There were surely nuances in her explanation which would make the extent of it seem similar - but not exactly the same. Nice. Another strange coincidence: On November 3/4 they released this demo at X party (I might have been there, in the Netherlands, had I not been in Vienna), the world's largest 8-Bit gathering around the Commodore 64, containing the best rendition of Princess Leia's Theme on that little 3-voice synthesizer chip called SID since more than 35 years - all programming, animation and music crammed into 340 Kilobytes (!), a different (but fascinating, for me at least) world for sure: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=170922 Re-watching the live stream and hearing this rendition during the end credits scroll made me a bit melancholic again, (and reminded me of the LSO concert in 1996), BUT - I hope we will see each other in Vienna (again)!!! 40 minutes ago, Danimarin46 said: Have all of you have the refund or are you still waiting too?
