Being a long-time fan of de Meij's Symphony No. 1 and of LotR/Tolkien in general, I can't wait to hear this one. Work in Progress: Symphony No. 5! After 30 years, composer Johan de Meij revisits Middle-earth, the enchanting mythological world of J. R. R. Tolkien, with his Symphony No. 5 'Return to Middle-earth'. Although there are some thematic reminiscences to his monumental first symphony 'The Lord of the Rings' from 1988, de Meij is putting a completely different musical vibe into this new symphony. There is an important role for a solo soprano and a mixed choir: they sing in Ilkorin, one of the Elvish languages of Middle-earth. The Orcs and other thugs also take the stage, but they only use raw screams in their own language, also known as 'black speech'. The 5th symphony consists of six movements: I) Miri na Fëanor (Jewels of Fëanor) II) Tinúviel (Nightingale) III) Ancalagon i-môr (Ancalagon, the Black) IV) Arwen Undómiel (Evenstar) V) Dagor Delothrin (The War of Wrath) VI) Thuringwethil (Woman of Secret Shadow) The symphony was commissioned by The Middle Earth Commissioning Project, organized by the Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana (USA). I checked all my JRRT literature (LotR, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, A Guide to Tolkien ...) but couldn't find Ilkorin mentioned anywhere. It's not even on Arda! (Unfortunately, I don't (yet) have the HoMe available to me.) Luckily, there is a short but very useful article on Wikipedia which provides a good starting point for further research (Kôr/Tirion, Ilkorindi etc.). Pellaeon 593 Posted July 19, 2018 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Simplistically, Tolkien always had two main languages, Quenya and Gnomish. Ilkorin was a minor language with a small vocabulary. It was the language for the Sindar. But as the Sindar became more important to the story, he renamed Gnomish to Sindarin and ceased development of Ilkorin.
