Nice work. Do you aspire to work as an animator/are you one already?

Nah, I just do this for my own happiness and fulfillment. The animation bizness is no bizness for me.

Do you have an ultimate career aspiration (yet?), Mr. Roach? Are the specifics/hoops of the animation/cartoon world not to your liking?

Posted

No ambitions (yet), just...living life, finding joys in the little things. Trying and failing to talk to girls.

And as someone who's conversed with animators on a daily basis (including being friends with an animator who worked on things like Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat)...it's an ugly world. Not irredeemably so, just one that doesn't leave me eager to try and jump in, especially given the demand for Kasey Kockroach and friends has been consistently low in person and online.

I've worked in the media industry for almost a decade. It's not all sexy and exciting.

Journalism, am I correct?

I'm content to just do it for my own kicks. I sure as heck recognize these things just wouldn't work in the mainstream. My sense of humor is too awkward an in-between "too childish for adults, too sick and pervy to be kid-appropriate". The characters are overall rather cute and there's a sincere bond and camaraderie that is the main five (Kasey, Slam, Nikita, Iris and Boober)...but Kasey and Iris are very clearly in a relationship despite being different species, and Slam and Kasey routinely make violent attempts to kill each other. Not to mention Nikita and Boober being an item, which would cause quite a ruckus since they're not only different species but both are of the female persuasion (Nikita's gay, Boober's bi).

Exactly the thing Youtube or other internet groups would eat up with the right amount of exposure, even with some crude animation - or maybe especially? You wouldn't even have to deal with the bullshit of mainstream media.

I may be a few years behind on getting the Youtube meta, but dumb little animation shorts used to be huge.

But of course if it's the animation process itself that you're not interested in and you have no willing friends to team up with and co-create something like that, it's completely fine.

Even then, I'd need a writer/co-writer to help me make them, well, funny.

Time for a new subforum.

Would you not get lonely in it by yourself? Or would TGP be joining you?

I was just reminded of my personal favorite Merrie Melodies/Looney Tunes short and I figured this was a good place to post it.

I regularly quote, "[googly flattered noise] tell me moooore about my eyyyyyyeesss"

Sorry for shitty Youtube quality

You think you're not funny, so how would you know they aren't funny already?

The inbetweening is awful in this one. It ruins the work of Bobe Cannon, Ben Washam and Rudy Larriva, makes the animation look all mushy and floaty. Only Ken Harris' work came out unscathed (Bugs singing King for a Day).

But Maltese's script somehow manages to make child abuse funny as hell, so it's worth it.

SHUT UP JUNIOR, CAN'T YOU SEE I'M THINKING!?

I’m no animation expert, I just know that one made me laugh and laugh when I was a kid.

The voice performance for the mother bear is the best thing about it.

Bea Benaderet was a badass lady.

I love how completely apathetic Mama Bear is to Papa beating the shit out of their kid.

Your surname is Kockroach?

He's a cockroach whose last name happens to be Kockroach, just as Slam is a wallaby who just happens to have the last name Wallaby.

I like Bruce Broughton's music for that show, and the They Might Be Giants music video they did. That's about it. It's at least less obnoxious than Animaniacs though.

Yeah Animaniacs is great.  Tiny Toons too but not as great as Animaniacs.  After school staples of my television diet as a kid, along with Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, Bonkers, etc.

Just like itchy and scratchy!

So your name is not Kasey?

No, that's down the hall to the right. Ya can't miss it!

Ya sure you don't want to do something in the visual work, not even a concept artist, general director or creator, etc.? If Butch Hartman could do it, why can't you?

He means funny as in humorous, not total weirdos, Jerry. ;)

Uuuugggh, I hate my handwriting. Almost as much as trying to squeeze words into drawings properly. Hopefully this isn't hard to look at. Also couldn't decide which was the better camera take, so here's two versions.

I could read it fine. Granted, I'm accustomed to reading bad handwriting since at times I can't even read mine. But yours is not bad.

Honestly if the quality of the photos were better I think it would be improved in a lot of ways.

Well doc, all I got here is dis phone camera!

I used to have a scanner in my high school/college years (hence some of the older drawings here), but it broke quite a long time ago.
