JoeinAR 1,894
I will watch ep 4 tonight. Then watch the ready room. I don't have to talk about it here. I watch with my husband and I discuss with Stefan. I must get the Eaglemoss diecast model of the taxi on Picard it is so retro.

I'll probably try to watch epi 3 tonight. The show is still entertaining, but the serialized storytelling bothers me to an extent. It was more apparent in this one because they're actually in a spaceship traveling to a place and literally all that happens is that they pick up a guy Picard knew. Picard was helping these people in flashbacks and in the present day, the planet has gone to shit. The older Trek shows would have done something with this as a self-contained storyline. I don't know, maybe he brings everyone together and saves the planet with a speech or something. Instead, a guy gets his head cut off and brief action/chase/escape occurs. Very uneventful episode, but Patrick Stewart carries the whole thing once again. The new Romulan swordsman guy gave me Lord of the Rings vibes, but overall I like this crew they've assembled. Popular Post Nick Parker 3,034
Just saw the fourth episode. The show keeps getting better and better. Spoiler First of all, what a goddamn sweet opening. Russo actually has a fun and levity-filled cue to begin, such a great departure from all the boring ominous string ostinati that sample libraries practically do in their own now. It's so charming watching Picard bond with the young boy--Elnor?--in classic Picard fashion, down to reading literature and teaching the kid fencing. It is also here that we start to see Jonathan Frakes' directing come to the fore, with nice visual ideas that impart their own meaning, rather than simply record action and dialogue. Throughout the episode we see his assuredness behind the camera. Afterwards, we're thrown again into present day, where now that the show has kicked off the premise, it seems that it isn't afraid to go deeper into the world it has set up, with its ramifications and impacts on the characters. A thankful reprieve from Plot MacGuffin chasing with a "pointy earred" backdrop, as Thor might put it. When the show was first announced, I shared my hopes that it would tackle the idea of aging, etc. in a way that American media is often afraid to do. What we are being given is something far more personal: Picard being confronted with his own image as a righteous man and hero. Much of the tension of the show, most explicitly in this episode, comes from the Idealistic and Noble Picard, who for decades we've associated with humanistic, compassionate, elegant victories, being smacked in the face with the fallout of a tremendous, horrifying failure. A man who could do no wrong in his quest for right suddenly gets challenged at every turn. This is probably most succinctly shown in the scene when they're trying without success to get clearance into the Romulan relocation planet: Picard tells Raffi and the ethnically confused pilot matter-of-factly: "Contact them, let them know it's me." Raffi's response? "That's the first thing we did." When he finally is able to touch down on the surface, he's greeted with the fruits of his once Midas touch: ghetto neighborhoods with a dirtied people, with racism in full display as obviously shown by the "Romulans Only" sign. His well-intentioned greetings are met with apathy or hostility. While I'm sure this is effective on its own, it especially hits being a fan of The Next Generation, thinking of episodes such as Reunification and The Defector. Again we see someone close to Picard upset and betrayed, feeling like a pawn in his "damned idealistic crusade". What's nice about the show, and this episode, is that while it does address these things head-on, in what one might argue is the self-aware vogue, it's also not afraid to embrace the same things the characters criticize. Picard gets hit multiple times for thinking he can just waltz in any place, lift his index finger, and with noble intentions and measured British poise get his way. What does he do? He goes to a "Romulans Only" establishment, sits down after throwing its segregation sign down on the ground, and asks for a waiter in Romulan. He gets slammed for being a pretty speech maker, leading a disgraced Romulan senator to challenge him to the death? He makes a short, impassioned speech towards the people he wronged. The Next Generation painted him as the consummate Starfleet officer, a true beacon of the Federation's principles, but with this show, it's shown that it was never the uniform or the commission that made him. If I had to share nitpicks, I'm not a fan of Blonde Scientist Girl. In this episode, modern TV speak and acting style rears its head through her more obnoxiously than previously, and I think it's here to stay. I also don't understand the deal with the captain and the holograms...am I the only one confused by this? All in all, a very entertaining episode that continues to suck me into the show. Not much was done with Soji and college-campus-folk-singer Romulan dude this episode, but I want that stuff to be more of a springboard for Picard and his crew's adventures than the primary reason to care about the show, anyways. Seven of Nine's introduction didn't mean anything to me, because I literally don't have an ounce of care towards Voyager, but I'm looking forward to seeing Voyager fans here chime in with how they feel about her return. And Frakes better direct more episodes! Also, the preview for the next episode looks like they raided the costume concept art for Rogue City from AI and I love it. Looks like it'll be a lot of fun. Disco Stu 15,475
The more graphic violence and bleak, almost dystopian tone are making me wince much more than some naughty words. But I’m still enjoying the characters, I’m in it til the end. I also wish it wasn’t relying so much on the story structure of withholding information/motivations from the audience just to string us along from episode to episode. I just rewatched Voyager seasons 6 and 7 over the past few weeks, so the killing of Icheb actually hit close to home for me. That was definitely the single most satisfying and well-developed relationship Seven had in the original show, outside of the vaguely mother-daughter-ish one with Janeway.
