  1. 1. What is the third best ST:TOS film score?

    • Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (James Horner)
    • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (Leonard Rosenman)
    • Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (Jerry Goldsmith)
    • Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (Cliff Eidelman)

The scores for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Jerry Goldsmith) and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (James Horner) are universally acclaimed. So I bought them. If I want to buy one more, which one do you recommend?

My recommended purchasing order:

TMP
TFF
TSFS (A little bit of reuse of stuff from II, but with more focus on melodic stuff)
TWOK (A lot of a great highlights, but a lot of low-key underscore)
TUC (see above)
TVH

I rank the scores like this:

I

III

II

V

VI

IV

Since you've heard I & II already, I'd probably recommend trying V next as it's the most different of the 4 you haven't heard yet and it's really good. III is excellent as well, but will be very familiar to you after II.

Poor Rosenmann. Never gets any love here.

His STIV actually makes me like the movie less, that is an achievement, and his LotR sounds like it's completely stuck in the '30s from what I heard of it. Haven't heard anything else from him.

I'm very sorry, but you're all wrong. The correct listing is:

1/ STAR TREK: TMP

2/ STAR TREK V

3/ STAR TREK III

4/ STAR TREK II

5/ STAR TREK VI

6/ STAR TREK IV

Incorrect!

I've never seen the Robocop sequels.  The first one is great and I never felt like I cared about seeing more than that.

You are wise, though the third at least has a guilty pleasure charm to it.

That’s the same ranking that Fal posted earlier, so.

Well, II and III can almost be considered a ginormous single score.  III has it's advocates who consider it the superior Horner Trek score. They're certainly more tightly linked than Goldsmith's two TOS scores.

Yeah—someone wants revenge, someone is threatening earth, the Enterprise is destroyed, zzzzzzz. Nothing I’ve seen really recaptures that TOS feel of pushing the boundaries of deep space exploration on a five-year mission. But my exposure to Star Trek is admittedly not encyclopedic.

I just realized that after all these years I don't think I've ever seen The Voyage Home. I've seen all of the other films (and all of the shows) at least a few dozen times; but for some reason I just never watched IV, or listened to the score before.

Odd since it was evidently the most watched in the cinema.

I employed economical and unambiguous, if technically inaccurate, nomenclature.

And for that you must suffer. ;)

I still think IV is a good movie.  V has gone from unwatchable to mostly unwatchable.  The movie that has gone down in my estimation the most is VI.  TMP and II are masterpieces and III has enough really good stuff in it.  (It's amazing to think that II and III are what ILM would do back in the day on a budget!)
