Will 1659 Report post Posted March 9 Terrific recording of one of my very favorite concertos! Interestingly, they decided to use the new first movement concert ending JW wrote a couple years back for Hooten's performance of just the first movement with the Marine Band:   Also, I'd forgotten how gorgeous the slow movement is (often I just end up focusing on the first and last ones because they're so fun):   Those string harmonies... 1 thx99 reacted to this
Will 1659 Report post Posted March 10 One thing I particularly love about this recording is the more pronounced timpani in the mix here:   In the previous two recordings you could barely hear the timpani there, yet they give the piece so much power.

I did my best to filter out some noises) Such a great interview Maurizio! Thank you for sharing it! Tom is wonderfully articulate and his great enthusiasm and excitement comes through in his answers. And the excitement is certainly warranted, a collaboration with John Williams and getting to perform the concerto with him. Hooten's commentary on his rehearsal with Williams was fascinating to hear and how he admired the Maestro's work ethic and the utter professionalism of his team and how open Williams was about changing things in the performance and also allowed and encouraged such things. It was also highly interesting to hear how serendipitous the beginnings of this project were and how a chance conversation with a stranger after a LA Phil concert led to this man funding half of the recording.  I can't wait to hear the whole thing when my copy gets here!  3 1 Cerebral Cortex, TownerFan, Jay and 1 other reacted to this

Thor 2485 Report post Posted March 19 Having listened to this once now, I have to say I'm impressed. It seems warmer, somehow, compared to the Sandoval, and less 'show-offy'. Bryant Burnette 343 Report post Posted March 19 Me too. Just got mine today and listened to it, and was thoroughly impressed.  Maaaaaaaybe prefer the Sandoval for the third movement, but if so only barely; and Hooten's first two are preferable. Jurassic Shark 3757 Report post Posted March 19 How do these compare to the Finnish recording?
Incanus 5026 Report post Posted March 22 I just got the CD yesterday and I thought it was just a wonderful performance but I have to give it several more listens before making any comparisons with the previous two recordings. Hooten is such a fine player whose range is really showcased on this album from the technically demanding concerto to the expansive Americana of Born on the Fourth of July which had such beatiful warmth to it.  It was interesting to note that Arturo Sandoval was among the major donors for this project. Nice to know of his appreciation for Hooten and Williams' concerto.  In the Born on the Fourth of July Williams seems to be deliberately giving it overall a slower reading with slightly less rhythmic edge than the Boston Pops version from early 1990's. Hooten's solos are beautiful and equally beautifully recorded. His sound and playing has such immediacy (Yo-Yo Ma comes to mind with similar striking connection to the listener through his instrument) that it just goes right through you and into your soul. 4 SteveMc, thx99, ricsim88 and 1 other reacted to this
