Preview of Don Davis's THE MATRIX RELOADED

The description of the "Burly Brawl" (featuring a musical duel of sorts between Don Davis and Juno Reactor) cue is titillating, although I expect proponents of orchestral primacy such as Filmtracks' Christian Clemmensen will find it intolerable.

This has been the score I've been anticipating most this year (not Howard Shore's final installment in the fine but extraordinarily overrated The Lord of the Rings trilogy), and I hope Warner Bros. (with Varèse Sarabande or other) graces it with a release longer than the announced one if it proves to be evey bit as good as its 1999 predecessor.

"Reloaded score in the same modernistic, often dissonant setting, with a lot of focus on brass and percussion.""But this second score is different in its scope, it's basically more epic than the first one. Don Davis uses a large orchestra but to that a choir is added, giving this score an awe-and-wonder feel not heard in the first Matrix score.""and there is a piece that is over ten minutes which is the most unusual combination of techno and modernistic orchestral writing you'll ever hear."

Sounds really great

Of course, there was a fair amount of (wordless) vocals for the first film, at least as represented on the album (it's been awhile since I've seen the film, which I don't like as much as the score), but I suppose the MFTM reviewer is simply indicating that there's even more of a choral presence this go around.

For sure, though, I can't wait for the return of the horn/trumpet polytonal dialogue. It was a clever, clever touch from Don Davis, and it established a distinguishing soundscape for the film, a feat John Williams has, unfortunately, accomplished very rarely in recent years.

There's a choir in The Power Plant (when Neo sees the power plant after "waking up") and in the finale of the first score...I think that's all.

Marian -who likes whistling along with that score. :)

1) The score isn't lame - quite the contrary. :music:

2) Even though Davis says it's non-thematic, there are at least three or four motifs/themes in it.

Marian - considering it a masterpiece.

I was just offered to watch the movie tomorrow (it doesn't officially start here until May 22). I declined, because I don't want to see the German dub.

Marian - worried but sure that it was the right decision.

Sorry but I gotta disagree here. IMO the "melodies" in The Matrix score BARELY qualify as "motifs". Forget themes.

I want a thematically developed Matrix score and I doubt Davis will be the man to deliver it personally. Then again his Warriors of Virtue score was pretty good.

It is unwise to debate Marian on this film score. He has done more research and work on it than anyone else here.

You might not like the themes, that's fine. But there are a couple of clearly recognizable (rhythmically and melodically) motifs in it, and I called them "themes" in the way motifs are called "themes" when they function as leitmofifs. :)

I haven't heard that yet. :) Anyway, I don't think Matrix not having any full-blown themes has anything to do with Davis (not) being capable of writing them. Perhaps he is, perhaps he isn't, but I don't think Matrix would be as good as it is with the Williams-type of thematic score.

Marian - :)

The whole score has a feel to it that is unforgetable. Personally I really enjoy the score (not sure about masterpiece), however the film annoys me with Reeves "Dude, I'm not the One!" acting.

I love the movie (though I only liked it at first, it grew on me)...I agree Reeves is a bit strange in places, but otherwise really good in the role. I guess he just really fit the role, because I usually consider him a horrible actor.

Marian - who has two friends watching that movie right now. :D
