Thor 7,490
Well, I think that can be a value sometimes -- especially when it's a recurrent motif that's supposed to mirror this insistant dark force that just won't let go (as the Depp character falls deeper and deeper into the occult). Not everything needs to be super original or complex all the time. I think it's my favourite Kilar composition. crocodile

Jay 37,336
OK, finished the OST album now. Wow, I liked it, I'm surprised this never came into my radar at any point until now There are some really goofy and clunky edits though, like these weird abrupt shifts from one idea to another mid-track, but overall it generally had a good flow to it and covered a lot of the major things I remembered from the main program. Oh, and I liked the Annie Lenox song too! Trying out the extended suits at the end of disc 3 now Tomorrow I'll try that playlist up above of the intended OST! Why did that version of the OST get changed to the final version?

I listened to most of the OST again. First thing, it is better than it was in my memory. Second thought was, this was obviously a blueprint for the Penny Dreadful score that I like a lot. Third thought, the music is still rough and quite primitive, sure on purpose. The music is very, how Shark put it once, monophonic. Obviously, Coppola wanted something permanently pointing to the beast inside the man. Still the music could have been much more original than it is I think. It is like a canvas filled with a few distinct dark colours but no shapes. At the time I was comparing it to Williams' Dracula score and there Killar Lost completely. Jay 37,336
I just finished it. I think it's certainly the best experience I had with the score yet! Whether that's because this is now my fourth time checking out the score (first - LLL main program, second - LLL bonus track program, 3rd - original OST program), or if its truly the best representation of all the highlights or whatever, but I think I found it the least repetitive of all 4 options, and just the most generally satisfying. I never knew I'd like this gothic sound so much!

Bespin 8,480
The only part I didn't like in the movie, was the "wolf-vision" accelerated plans. For me accelerated plans refers to old failed cascade effects in 60-70s movies.
Popular Post Romão 2,274
The whole movie, from the music, design, performances, visual effects, cinematography, costume design, etc., is at the service of an unified vision, a concept. It's like a fever dream, it is completely its own thing. For me it remains, easily, the greatest Dracula movie ever made. It is not narratively perfect, but it pretty much excels in everything else Holko, Marian Schedenig, crocodile and 2 others

Bespin 8,480
It's certainly a 25 stars scores out of 25.8069. A favourite Top 666 score for me. It has something the best Morricone's score have too: the forward movement. The movement of the beast. By moments the music is alienating, hyponitic because of this repeating movement that goes forward and forward. It took an old hand like Kilar to find the right tone that fits perfectly with the tension of Coppola's film.

Popular Post Andy 4,117
I've been meaning to sculpt my own playlist ever since this came out. There's just too much food at this buffet. But I kept putting it off, because it's sort of a big job, and even listening, comparing, and deciding can make you a little... batty. I like the Demo Cassette Tracklist posted earlier, but found it left too many goodies off, so here is my own. My loose rules of this playlist 1. Include all major themes and sequences 2. Eliminate redundancies that are too similar 3. Follow a loose chronology, but favor listening experience 4. Use the "Dracula Toolbox" cues. I just love the idea (and name) of "Dracula Toolbox" as a way to add salt/pepper to taste 5. (This rule is very personal preferential) Include most of the variations of the Vampire Hunters Theme, which is my favorite 6. End the album with a series of End Credits pieces, as well as the Storm without Choir, which seemed like a good place to put it. If anyone wants to try it and give feedback on the flow, I'd love to hear what you think. It comes in at about 90 minutes. 1. Dracula – the Beginning (Original Extended Version) [D1 T1] 2. The Castle [D1 T3] 3. Dracula Toolbox D18C [D2 T25] 4. The Journey (Original Extended Version) [D1 T2] 5. The Letter II (alternate) [D2 T16] 6. Mina/Johnathan (unused album suite) [D3 T20] 7. The Letter II [D1 T11] 8. Mina’s Photo (Original Album) [D3 T3] 9. Dracula Toolbox D18A [D2 T23] 10. The Brides (Original Album) [D3 T5] 11. Dracula Toolbox D18B [D2 T24] 12. Love Remembered (Original Album) [D3 T7] 13. Lucy’s Party (Original Album) [D3 T4] 14. Mina Possessed [D2 T3] 15. The Storm (Original Version) [D1 T10] 16. Dracula Toolbox: Lucy’s Lullaby (harp) [D2 T26] 17. Rules Café (extended album version) [D3 T18] 18. Vampire Hunters (Original Version) [D1 T24] 19. Dracula Toolbox D21 (Unused Album Suite) [D3 T21] 20. The Hunt Builds (Original Version) [D1 T20] 21. Lucy Squirms (alternate) [D2 T15] 22. The Hunters Prelude (Original Album) [D3 T9] 23. Lucy’s Lullaby (vocal) [D1 T22] 24. Lucy’s Neck (Original Version) [D1 T13] 25. The Stake [D1 T23] 26. The Green Mist (Original Album) [D3 T10] 27. Mina/Dracula (Extended Suite) [D3 T17] 28. So Cold (Original Version) [D2 T2] 29. The Fire (alternate introduction) [D2 T19] 30. Ring of Fire (Original Version) [D2 T4] 31. Whispered Drac (Choir) [D2 T28] 32. Popular Post HunterTech 989
When I went to see the film for the recent Fathom screening, they played several "deleted" scenes (mainly just extended/alternate versions of select sequences from the first act) after the movie finished, and quite curiously the Mina and Jonathan scene at the opening has the full Rules Café Waltz track playing instead of only the music box variant. I have no idea if this was merely them testing cues out before making the final edit, but it stood out to me so much that I'm kind of confused as to why the producers of the expansion didn't use these bits as a resource to better decide the placement of cues (especially if the M&E track really was their primary reference). Maybe the upcoming Omni book might have answers. In any case, I applaud the sound editors for being able to make a decent film edit out of the material, even if only because it was designed to be torn apart. A couple of portions obviously wouldn't be easily replicable with only the LLL (I doubt there's some filter on modern DAWs to replicate the distorted Lucy's Lullaby), but any minor discrepancies from what fans have put together don't bother me. I do wish certain variants were used instead (I actually much prefer the original The Storm over the one without choir), but I'm satisfied enough to hear it on its own occasionally (especially compared to the butchering of other notable scores). That being said: it's so customizable that any presentation (official or fan made) is bound to be successful because the music is just that good. (Sidenote: I always thought Dracula Toolbox D21 would've made for a pretty good end credits track paired with the "intended" one in the main presentation. Something about it feels very well representative of the melodrama the film exudes.) Amer, Holko and Andy

It seems @jacksparrow900 actually figured out the general approach for it: Quote If you listen to the center channel on the 5.1 mix it sounds like the normal track add in the rear and front channels and they sound in. a different pitch which they just mixed over the normal pitch creating an eerie track. It doesn't sound quite exact, but I imagine that's because of the applied reverb/echo in the film mix. Definitely is good enough for me at least. thestat 348
Still mystified by why the Race Against the Sunset cue was omitted from the original CD. It was the most obvious highlight missing from an already generous album. Getting Kilar to score the film was an absolutely brilliant move by Coppola. Not surprising that Jackson explored getting him to do LOTR with Shore's score exhuding some of those dark earthly tones as well blondheim
