Outside of the film world, he seems to be getting his hands busy with all these new arrangements for Anna Sophie-Mutter, etc. This is the aspect of his work that I don't see stopping, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it continue at a more or less steady pace. I mean, I don't want him to stop writing music at all. Concert works suit me perfectly.

I double-confirmed what the source said. I'm not going to keep repeating myself; everything is in this thread already... Only time will prove us right or wrong, so can we please stop arguing until then? 😘 I think we all noticed. But it really isn’t relevant. You have information you can’t give us. Fine. But you can’t expect us to take information we don’t have into account when making up our minds about this rumour. Obviously, I hope he doesn’t retire. And like he has said many times himself I don’t think he will - unless, of course, something health-related happens. We have no reason to believe or speculate about that, though. I keep having this (naive, I’m sure) idea that Williams will age like my great-grandma who retired at age 98 (and only due to poor sight). She’s turning 107 this summer. Popular Post mrbellamy 6,272
I'm just chuffed that we've gotten so much music from John Williams this decade. It's kinda been a dream. I always said I would just about pass out if he followed through with this Star Wars trilogy. I was cautious about him doing a seventh and I was prepared for him cancelling on an eighth. So once again, I'm not fantasizing about December until we get a tweet that music is being recorded. So far so good, fingers crossed etc. Retirement or not, this is the last time I'll have any kinds of expectations for a new JW score. For one, this is as much as I could possibly ask for. Episode IX would be such a win. I have not forgotten when Deathly Hallows was the last conceivable opportunity for some John Williams finale shit. For another, I really enjoy these new scores but I listen to them more or less satisfied with the idea that he's got his mega classics out of his system by now. He's sure had a lot of them. It's corny but I mostly just love these soundtracks as some extra quality time with the old man. His talent is inspiring and his music continues to be such a part of me. I instantly recognize all the old autopilot tricks and treasure the new surprises. I'm going to miss him when he's not writing music anymore. My relationship with John Williams is one-sided and imaginary but that's the agreement which allows it to feel deep and true and personal. Always wishing him the very best and appreciate whatever he's got in store for me. Let’s stay realistic gents. There’s still a chance he won’t ever write another movie score. Let’s make sure that we don’t live in the future, but we appreciate the decades of incredible music he wrote for us to enjoy. I hate to be such a Debbie Downer, but he won’t live forever. Thor 7,465
The socalled "news" from Wizarding-whathisface was very clearly dubious from the start, not least of which was the desperate self-affirming rhetoric (the 'ethos' part of the three aristotelian modes of persuasion). I'm surprised it got so much flack it did; a waste of energy, really, as it was fairly transparent. pete 905
He's said repeatedly he'll continue to write music while he's able to. That should be common knowledge to most regular visitors here. That was the main reason the prediction he'd retire at the end of 2019 was met with responses that can be summarized with one word: "bullshit". crumbs 14,301
TBH, with nothing else from Spielberg on the horizon (he regularly goes into multi-year hiatuses) and Indiana Jones 5 almost certainly delayed indefinitely due to coronavirus, I wouldn't be surprised if TROS became JW's final film score. Star Wars is finished, Hollywood is shutting down and JW doesn't seem interested in branching out beyond Spielberg. But hey, if that means Williams spends the next few years just writing small, personal works or new concert suites, that's great news to me. Indy 5 would be icing on the icing of a well-iced cake. Yeah, that would be fine by me. Plus, there is a ton of "new" (or rather unheard) Williams music yet to be dug ut, especially from the TV days. So even if he retired tomorrow, we would still have a lifetime full of Williams treasures to hunt down. And that's on top of enjoying the great amounts that are already out there.
