Jay 37,287
Quote FYI ON THIS RELEASE We didn't expect this to be announced so soon so we are a little late with some of the info. Glad the word is out now though. We might have autographed copies for the first 100 or so orders...MIGHT. So if you order now and we do have signed copies you'll get one...but that is not a selling point nor a guarantee. I repeat we MIGHT have signed copies. Regardless, the music is amazing and we are so happy that we were able to release season 2! Manakin Skywalker 4,891
Ah crap I didn't even see the announcement until around 8PM CST, so I probably missed out on the potential autographed copies. Season 1 was announced before the pre-orders went up so I was able to be one of the first to order it.

Popular Post Jay 37,287
Today I finally took the shrinkwrap off my Season 1 2CD set from La La Land! (Previously I had only been listening to these scores via Spotify!) Boy was it a pleasure to listen to these scores again ahead of the Season 2 OST release, and hopefully Season 3 some time this year I love how each episode suite often has its own main theme, and they are often so catchy and good! Score by Score on the set Old Wounds (Broughton) - still my least favorite score other than Cottee's. I love the main theme of course - it's great! - but I don't really find that Broughton did too much exciting stuff in the pilot itself otherwise. Sorry, Broughton fans! If The Stars Should Appear (McNeely) - A highlight of the set, with perhaps the best and most earworm-y main episode theme. I love it! Exciting orchestrations too, the suite takes you on a real journey. Love the grand piano in track 9, and the appearance of the Ludlow motif and Return of the Jedi reference too. Really nice renditions of the main Orville theme in track 10, especially when it and the main Orville theme and main episode theme play off each other towards the end. Aces! Command Performance (Debney) - Huh. The back of the CD says "Performances" instead of "Performance". Never noticed that before. The inside of the booklet, La La Land's website and the press release use "Performance", though it's still "Performances" on the warm butter site too so I guess fixed versions were never made. Oh well. Anyways, this is a rather unassuming score, nothing too remarkable about outside of track 12's cool Goldsmith Star Trek vibes and Horner Danger Motif cameos, IMO About A Girl (McNeely) - The return of fun orchestrations, love the funkyness in tracks 14 and 17! Outside of those fun passages, another somewhat unassuming score. Pria (Debney) - I love this, one of the more exciting scores, just has an awesome momentum of action music pushing forward the whole time, some of the best and most exciting action music on the set! Track 21 reminds me of Giacchino's Medal of Honor, though I suspect both are referencing something I'm not familiar with. Track 22 "Pria's Theme" is a nice capper after the action onslaught. Was this recorded just for this album or does it appear in the episode? Krill (McNeely) - One of the more satisfying scores on the set because it's so well-rounded, featuring a nice array of action music, mystery music, suspense music, emotional music, etc. Sort of an abrupt ending, but that's OK. Onward to disc 2! Manakin Skywalker, Pellaeon, Yavar Moradi and 3 others
Popular Post Jay 37,287
Majority Rule (Debney) - I LOVE THIS! How cool is it that we don't only have a cool new series giving us throw-back, retro scores in the style of various classics from the 70s-90s, but also something cool and modern like this? This is such a great balance to the otherwise similar sound of the rest of the season, the electronics are brilliant here! Also, the ending wrap-up to the suite is really great. Into The Fold (McNeely) - One of the sleeper gems of the album. I couldn't say what particular aspects make it remarkable, it's just kind of subtly good the whole time. Cupid's Dagger (Debney) - Honestly this one blew right past me both times I listened to this CD today. I guess it didn't contain anything that grabbed me Firestorm (Debney) - Another clear highlight of the set! I love the ferocious intensity of some of the action music here, and the suspense music is top notch throughout. It's no wonder this score gets the longest suite of the whole season! New Dimensions (Cottee) - The new guy gets a pretty generous suite, and I think earns it because this music is up to par with Debney and McNeely's offerings, for the most part! Some of the tension building music is fairly pedestrian, but the action and wonderment music is up to snuff! Mad Idolatry (McNeely) - Another highlight of the whole season! The main episode theme is super catchy and grabs you ever time it comes in. There's so much good and interesting underscore here, the entire suite is fantastic from start to end. And it doesn't even need any action blowouts to make this a sure highlight. Great stuff! What a fun afternoon of music I just had! Jay 37,287
So I'd guess out of the 12 scores, the top tier ones for me are certainly: If The Stars Should Appear / Majority Rule / Firestorm / Mad Idolatry The middle tier would be About A Girl / Pria / Krill / Into The Fold And the final tier would be Old Wounds / Command Performance / Cupid's Dagger / New Dimensions Can't wait to hear 14 new scores next week! Jay 37,287
If you've ever liked any Star Trek TV shows, you'd probably like The Orville too. The early episodes are heavy on dick and fart joke style humor, but they organically move away from that and it becomes more balanced after that. Basically it's Star Trek: The Next Generation style plots and characters, but with more humor Pieter Boelen

Basically it's Star Trek: The Next Generation style plots and characters, but with more humor Pretty much that! And it's probably a lot better after 2 seasons (and less than half as many episodes over the same number of years) than TNG was. For anyone who isn't really feeling it for Discovery or Picard, the Orville is much closer in tone to the 90's Trek shows, but with better production values. Not that they lacked, but FX tech moves on; the ship FX are only marginally better, there's just more of them (and not as good as the Mandalorian, for example), although the Orville itself is a bit of a meh design, certainly not as iconic as the Enterprise. However, the music is much closer to the Trek movies than the TV shows, one episode is pretty a pastiche of The Motion Picture, but generally it's more tone than anything specific. Indeed, the main issue I'd have with it is that some of the alien species are so clearly meant to be a pastiche/riff/whatever of specific Trek aliens or characters (Moclans = Klingons, Kaylon/Isaac = Data with a hint of Borg etc. Krill = Romulans (bit more of a stretch) and others) that it's a shame they didn't let McFarlane just make a more trad Star Trek series alongside Discovery/Picard, like the upcoming Strange New Worlds is likely to be. But definitely psyched for the new album... Yavar Moradi

Dunge_Onmaster 12
I bought it digitally today. The quieter passages ("System Searching", "Possible Life", "Laura's Theme" etc.) are quite convincing and have a remarkable symphonic quality for a TV series. The unimaginatively crescendoing string clusters of Dennis McCarthy and other TNG composers (Ron Jones not included, of course) can't even come close to keeping up with The Oriville . The action scoring (e.g. in "Battle for Earth") is skillfully crafted, but does not leave a lasting impression. Nevertheless, the cleverly integrated quotes from the great sci-fi scores of the Silver Age are a nice treat; for example, the string ostinato in the finale of "Activating the Device", which is very strikingly reminiscent of "Snowspeeder Rescue". All in all, a great orchestral score for a series. However, nothing here really sweeps me off my feet in the long run. I can't get rid of the feeling that in the absence of new really excellent (genre) scores, pretty much everything with a big orchestra and a classical scoring approach is hyped here and on similar boards. Tough times for film music fans...
