Perhaps I missed the correct answer which is 1982.

E.T.

STTWoK,

Gandhi

Poltergeist.

Conan the Barbarian

The Thing

Blade Runner

Victor Victoria

Sophie's Choice.

Every great composer was on the top of his game that year.

My list was slightly better than Richard's. Richard you forgot there was another Oscar winner for Best Original Song Score, the utterly brilliant Victor/VIctoria. It remains one of my all time favorite films. John Williams mentor Henry Mancini's brilliant song score with friend and collaborator Leslie Briscusse shared the spotlight with Williams great work.

2005 was ridiculous:

Revenge of the Sith

Memoirs of a Geisha

Munich

War of the Worlds

Sahara

Doom

A History of Violence

Kingdom of Heaven

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The Roost

The Chumscrubber

King Kong

Syriana

Hostage

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Wolf Creek

I'm probably even leaving something out.

John was clearly not on top of his game that year.
