I've only heard of George Fouracres from the randomly titled Daphne Sounds Expensive radio sketch show (even more randomly featuring opera singer Willard White as the narrator) and from his genuinely superb turn as Andrew Lloyd Webber in One Man Musical. An hilarious fictionalised account of ALW's life by comedy singer/songwriters Flo & Joan (who play the music in the show). The rest I've never even heard of and I listen to a fair bit of radio comedy where up and coming comics often appears as panellists on various things. With apologies to any Americans reading this, any time I've watched SNL, I've always been surprised at how unfunny and amateurish it is. Perhaps it's one of those shows that used to be amazing but isn't what it used to be... I guess I grew up with Rory Bremner (his show with John Bird and John Fortune in the 90s was absolutely brilliant satire and he remains a superb impressionist) and Dead Ringers, another impressions show which was recently resurrected on Radio 4 after a number of years on hiatus, as well as other shows such as The Now Show, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You, which still manages to be funny and very on point, mostly due to Ian Hislop... it helps that Paul Merton is one of my favourite comedians too.

SNL is just the kind of show that airs whatever's ready each week and sometimes there's a bunch of bangers, somethings there's a bunch of crap you'd never want to see again.  So many hilarious highlights over the years, but its been to just watch compilations or individual youtube videos of individual sketches than checking out any entire episodes

I’ve always liked older women and Michelle Pfeiffer and now she’s leaning in to her hot granny phase. I know she’s all dolled up, I don’t care, but women pushing 70 were never this hot in the past.

It’s nothing to do with that. It’s a series that’s special to many people that could very well go the wrong way in the wrong hands. It’s not worth taking the chance. The line must be drawn here.

You won't believe this, but shows made in one country can actually air in other countries as well!

Who would the UK need this? They have their topical Panel Shows?

Probably both right to be honest. There isn’t anything quite like SNL on uk tv but on the flip side we do have a lot of excellent satire on the tv (and radio - one area where uk radio beats pretty much anywhere) so I don’t know how much appetite there will be for this sort but I’ll probably give it a look.

As an American you probably don't realise.

We've been taking the piss off SNL for about 30 years.

Its almost always rubbish

Who were the last comedy personalities to ascend from SNL to major movies and become big stars?

Just when you thought they'd run out of people to kill. Downsized ranch, same amount of mortal enemies.

Adam Sandler from the 90s and Will Ferrel from the 2000s.  Really nobody from the 2010s had a career anywhere close to them (yet)

Obviously Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey are super successful from TV work but not movies

Ferrell was the last one who sprang to my mind too, I couldn't think of anyone else. The point being SNL's relevance is kind of over, especially as a serious springboard for major talent (perhaps because there is none anymore).

So of course they now launch it in the UK, fifty years too late.

I want someone to tackle Laurel and Hardy.

Huh.  Season 1 of Mr. and Mrs. Smith was announced way back in 2021 as to be starring Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a reboot of the 2005 movie.  Before filming started, Waller-Bridge left and was replaced by Maya Erskine before it finally starting filming in 2023 and was released in 2024.

Season 2 was announced shortly afterward, so like 2 years ago, and now the female lead is being replaced again before filming has even started.  The new male lead is Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, Companion) was supposed to be the new female lead, but now Thatcher's been replaced by Talia Ryder (Do Revenge, Dumb Money, Honey Don't).

So 30-something characters in the movie and season 1, now early 20-somethings in season 2.  And if they are just about to start filming now it won't be out until 2027, 3 years after season 1, and 6 years after the whole project was announced.  Crazy.
