What do you think about The Untouchables?

One of a very select exceptions. I love the film. But this one focuses on the good guy and I was a fan of the tv show. I suspect few know its television origins. But you know this cause Alex told you so.

However one genre I have a particular disdain and avoid like the plague are the 'Horror-Gore' 'Saw' types where it's extensive and graphic and truly horrific. Gore can be done tastefully, but to make it the focal point of the film is too much for me.

Its called torture horror. Its a genre that appeals to seriously sick minds.

-Romcoms

-Horror

-Anime

-Westerns

-Most straight-up dramas

-Musicals

-"Heist" movies

-"Gangster" movies

-Most biopics / historical documentaries

-Straight-up action films (looking at you, Michael Bay!)

-Foreign films

-Raunchy comedies

Honestly pretty much anything that isn't sci-fi / fantasy / dramedy.

Your range is very tiny.

Theatricality.

The musical is such an inherently theatrical genre that I just don't get the point of making a film out of it.

You miss the point. Seeing a musical can be an expensive situation. Seeing a movie version is more affordable. Then there are non-traditional musicals for film such as Victor/Victoria which work better on film than stage.

I will give most all movies a chance even in genres I dislike.

"Torture porn", I believe is the correct term.

Always found that sub genre fascinating. I absolutely LOVE the SAW films, less for the graphic violence and more for the big, mythological universe they're able to build over the series of films. Beyond the schlock value, there's actually highly intelligent storytelling going on.

So if Anthony Hopkins played a zombie butler in The Remains Of The Day, you might consider it a worthwhile movie? Really, some of you guys seem to miss out so much. Movies can be more than 'cool'.

I really shouldn't have to call myself an "adventurous" viewer for having recently watched The Duchess and both versions of My Cousin Rachel and enjoyed them. I'm telling you, there's an obvious geek culture of artistically stunted blokes that permeates JWfan that disproportionately values a select narrow band of schlock and awesome apocalyptic junk*, and it's highly resistant to, and dismissive of works that might be thought of as too female, too grounded or too much like something their old granny might have liked. These of course include historical dramas, costume dramas, period pieces, romance -- nooooooo, don't like what the girls like! Could be icky!

*I love all this too, but I had to leave my comfort zone sometime.

Jerry, see my recent post in the WWTLFYW (Older Films).

Also...DR. ZHIVAGO got reviewed, recently.

I very much like "girly" or "chick-lit" films. FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL is an almost perfect movie.

I'm not targeting anyone directly. I just mean generally.

It's a good show. The original Mission Impossible series is another oldie that I enjoy watching.

@Chen G. Pinpointed the reason.

I don't like going from a realistic scene, to one that is instantly broken by characters singing to music that isn't there in the context of the film. Breaking boundaries in a crude way.

So you hate the opening musical number of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom which cleary is breaking the boundries in reality?

Plotless, meandering "coming of age" films about boring ass teenagers

(Ladybird is the most prominent recent example of this).  The "I'm going to make a movie about how I yelled at my parents in high school" approach.

Sundance Indie ... Some good movies do come out of there but most are absolute trash.

True for every genre (and everything in life). 90% of everything is crap, whether it's Westerns, Sci-fi, Crime, Drama, Comedy, Sundance Indie, ... But every now and then, you get rewarded. And the more genres you embrace, the more good movies you will find.

Soon Spielberg will open up your mind. ;)

I also want to iterate that the items on my list aren't necessarily genres that I dislike, just genres that I'm a bit more picky about. Typically I enjoy almost anything as long as it has a solid plot.

I'll draw an exception - the Cannes high brow European art film. I would say the majority are good or better and always worth my time.

To be fair to Anything Goes, Willie was actually performing a number as part of her job. She wasn't just some regular person randomly breaking into song, like that guy above is complaining about.

she was until she suddenly entered a new realm. It stepped out of reality

Love them (well, love good ones).  It's a heightened, unreal thing - but so is, like, a lengthy action sequence, or pretty much anything else put to film.  It all comes down to your willingness to watch it and accept it.

When people say "I hate Romcoms", I think (I hope) that they refer to the many dumb, cheap, straight-up romantic movies (where every woman dreams of a dark haired doctor) that female channels like to program between cooking shows.

Hit the nail on the head.

If more romantic comedies were like "As Good as It Gets" or "What Women Want", I'd probably enjoy them more often. I think the reason for that is the characters - both male and female - learn a deeper understanding of each other and actually grow.

On 'torture porn/horror' ... yeah, not really my bag either.

Those backpacking kids were just trying to score some weed and get laid, and THAT'S justification for drilling into their kneecaps etc?

"Tortured for no reason" has 46.200 results on google. Ergo, it's realistic (but still exploitative if it's a movie's main selling point, of course)

The only time I drilled into someone's knee caps is because he was an internet stalker and he needed to understand his transgressions. He never bothered us again. Allegedly

I'll never forget your story about that guy who was in an arguement with someone on the internet, then he drove thousands of miles and tracked him down. I was always wondering if that was you.

My example was (as far as I recall) roughly what happens during the first 30-45 minutes or so of the first Hostel flick, it was on TV and I was checking it out out of idle curiosity. Then the non-DIY drilling started and I decided I wasn't that curious after all.

It works better once the hole is drilled and you stick a lit M-80 into the hole. You thought he screamed loudly during the drilling.

How could I forget that I don't like disaster movies, not even von Trier's Melancholia?! :pat:

Remember the disaster bit in Prometheus? For me that was the worst moment of the movie and it fully represents why I find the genre so boring.

I don't like movies with only black people in it.  It lacks diversity.

But if they are muscular and half naked, that's okay.

Distaster movies are one of my favourite genres!
