Hans Zimmer's DUNE (2021)

Yeah. Head scratcher.

I guess Williams has done that a time or two with some of his scores ( a motif or theme not being present on the album). Then again, Williams doesn’t typically release THREE albums for one of his scores lol.

Wow, it has most of the tracks that I was missing from the soundtrack. (outside of the Duncan tracks)

Edit: It also has the more organ heavy version of the Sandworm scene.

Yeah I scrubbed through that one a noticed the organ at the end. Very cool.

Not sure if I’m allowed to ask this here. I got the video download helper installed. I right click but it pulls up EVERY video on the page. And they aren’t labeled. Just says “HLS streaming - “ and then a time length…

do I just take an estimate and hope it’s the right track?

Enjoyed Dune. I don't think it can really be done better than this, looking forward to the next installment. Not a big fan of the score but it didn't bother me in the film except a few times and that was just to do with it being too loud and not being able to hear the actors. Who mixed it in?! Anyway, can't wait for the second movie, glad it is definitely being done otherwise it would have been a "WTF" where's the ending? lol

Yeah, I don't think Anakin's mom's theme was on the album was it? Oboe solo I think.

Directors like Chris Nolan and Denis Villeneuve love to mix their scores very, very loud on the movie. It was the same thing on Interstellar (which is a score that I like), Tenet and Blade Runner 2049. In Dune's case, the music is so loud sometimes that it's hard to hear everything else including dialogue. Sure, I have subtitles for their lines in Portuguese so I can understand what they're saying, but for people on English-speaking countries this must be infuriating.

Yeah it was a bit, many times we were turning to each other and going, "are we not supposed to know what they are saying to each other at this point?!" Which started the usual argument at home... My bf likes subtitles to everything and I hate them unless it's obviously a foreign language. He was like, SEE, I TOLD YOU, YOU ALWAYS NEED SUBTITLES...... ugh, lol

I have experienced this exact same thing with a man and it is very frustrating. Imo, they are only necessary when they are necessary. I tell him all the time, if I could watch it in German without subtitles we would. And then Dune happens and he receives blockbuster validation. Thanks, Dune for letting the subtitles-all-the-time people have their day.

No, really, thanks.

Whoever wants subtitles all the time is just mad! It's just madness! Fuck this subtitles trend! Some people clearly don't understand the medium film any more. It's a visual medium, it cannot be reduced to language. Who cares if you don't understand a couple of lines from Tenet or Dune. You'll get the point of these masterpieces anyway.

I honestly dont know which scene here would have had the music too loud to make voices inaudible. But since we're an always-subtitles country, my brain may just be playing tricks on me.

The only movie where I recall it bothering me was Tenet.

I did a rough comparison between the FYC and the OST and this is what I came up with

Spoiler

OST01 Dream of Arrakis = FYC01 1m01 Opening

OST02 Herald of Change = FYC02 1m02b Herald of Change + ?

OST03 Bene Gesserit = FYC04 2m10 Bene Gesserit Arrive + FYC06 2m12 Bene Gesserit Leave

OST04 Gom Jabbar = FYC05 2m11 Gom Jabbar

OST05 The One = FYC07 2m13a Paul and Jessica + ?

OST06 Leaving Caladan = FYC08 2m14 Leaving Caladan

OST07 Arrakeen = ?

OST08 Ripples in the Sand = FYC11 4m28-29 Failed Harvester Lock

OST09 Visions of Chani = FYC12 4m30 Visions of Chani

OST10 Night on Arrakis = FYC14 5m32-35 Night on Arrakis

OST11 Armada = FYC15 5m36-37 Harkonnen Attack + FYC16 5m38-39 Betrayal

OST12 Burning Palms = FYC17 5m40-41 Burning Palms / Duncan Kicks Ass

OST13 Stranded = FYC18 6m43 Burning City

OST14 Blood for Blood = FYC19 6m44 Broken Tooth

OST15 The Fall =?

OST16 Holy War = FYC20 6m46 Holy War Across the Universe

OST17 Sanctuary = FYC21 6m48 A Place to Hide

OST18 Premonition = FYC22 7m50-51 Duncan’s Sacrifice

OST19 Ornitopher = ? + FYC24 7m55 Chase into Dust Storm

OST20 Sandstorm = ? + FYC25 7m55b Dust Vision

OST21 Stillsuits = FYC27 7m59-61 Stillsuits + ?

OST22 My Road Leads into the Desert = FYC29 8m69 My Road Leads into the Desert

Sketchbook05 Paul's Dream = FYC30 End Credit Dream

Feel free to add or correct anything I may have missed.

Most of the FYC tracks are film mixes of their OST counterparts. And I think only the Ripples in the Sand cue has material not on the OST (the first 30 seconds or so).

This leaves us with 7 new cues that hadn't been released yet:

-1m04 Paul Tells Duncan His Dream

-3m20 Sandwalk Video

-4m27 Flight to Spice Field

-5m31 Sardukar

-7m52-54 Escape in Ornithopter

-7m57 Kill Them

-8m63-64 Run / Shai-hulud

Let me help Knight of Ren a bit:

- Herald of Change on the Album adds Leto's Speech at the end

- Both Bene Gesserit FYC tracks have material that's not on their joined album version.

- Arrakeen and The Fall are not on the FYC for some reason.

- At first I thought Ripples in the Sand would be 'Worm Adjacent', but it appears they've merged that with 'Failed Harvester Lock'. The Album only uses 4m29, while the FYC adds 4m28.

- Ornithopter adds the track 'Good Luck' for the 1st part (not sure what that tracks slatenumber is though: 7m51b?)

- 'Dust Vision' is another unreleased track... Sandstorm is actually Flight Through Sandstorm

Still unsure what The One's 2nd part is though
I also dont know why the FYC version of Stillsuits is shortened. From what I recall the filmversion's length matches the albumversion's.

Thanks for the help. You're right, Dust Vision is not the same as the second half of Sandstorm. And I wasn't sure about the bits on the OST not on the FYC (like Leto's Speech for example), so thanks for that too.

The updated comparison would be something like this:

Spoiler

OST01 Dream of Arrakis = FYC01 1m01 Opening

OST02 Herald of Change = FYC02 1m02b Herald of Change + Leto’s Speech

OST03 Bene Gesserit = FYC04 2m10 Bene Gesserit Arrive + FYC06 2m12 Bene Gesserit Leave

OST04 Gom Jabbar = FYC05 2m11 Gom Jabbar

OST05 The One = FYC07 2m13a Paul and Jessica + ?

OST06 Leaving Caladan = FYC08 2m14 Leaving Caladan

OST07 Arrakeen = ?

OST08 Ripples in the Sand = FYC11 4m28-29 Failed Harvester Lock

OST09 Visions of Chani = FYC12 4m30 Visions of Chani

OST10 Night on Arrakis = FYC14 5m32-35 Night on Arrakis

OST11 Armada = FYC15 5m36-37 Harkonnen Attack + FYC16 5m38-39 Betrayal

OST12 Burning Palms = FYC17 5m40-41 Burning Palms / Duncan Kicks Ass

OST13 Stranded = FYC18 6m43 Burning City

OST14 Blood for Blood = FYC19 6m44 Broken Tooth

OST15 The Fall = Leto's Ring?

OST16 Holy War = FYC20 6m46 Holy War Across the Universe

OST17 Sanctuary = FYC21 6m48 A Place to Hide

OST18 Premonition = FYC22 7m50-51 Duncan’s Sacrifice

OST19 Ornitopher = Good Luck + FYC24 7m55 Chase into Dust Storm

OST20 Sandstorm = Flight Through Sandstorm

OST21 Stillsuits = FYC27 7m59-61 Stillsuits + ?

OST22 My Road Leads into the Desert = FYC29 8m69 My Road Leads into the Desert

Doesn't all the tracks have this weird high pitched clicking noise over them? It's especially noticeable in the quieter tracks, i.e. in "Bene Gisserit leave" it starts around 10 sec in. Or is this just overlayed in the player and isn't there when you've downloaded the tracks?

I dont think I hear anything like that in the downloads..

What I do notice however is that leveling is set to match the filmversion, which means some track have annoying volume fluctuations.

I also got a helpful correction from another site

'Worm Adjacent' is in fact the 2nd part of Stillsuits which the FYC lacks

I did notice the volume dip when I threw Flight to Spice Field into audacity. Kind of annoying. But a relatively easy fix.

My cover of the last cue !

Wow. That was a hell of a thing. Amusingly somewhere between Young Frankenstein and Blade Runner. (That's a compliment, actually.)

I've been spending the last week listening to more "fun" scores, but Dune keeps showing up in my End of Year lists. And my Shai-Hulud it is a monster. Listening to it is like listening to the sci-fi equivalent of The Wall.

Someone familiar with the score - can you point out to me all the instances/tracks in the score where the following motif appears on solo voice -

I am just interested in the solo voice rendering like the one which begins 70 seconds into the track above.

Ironically, the sandworm in the 1984 movie is probably the scariest male body part I've ever seen. Since they wanted a more female focus in this film, it makes sense symbolically. :P
