Hugo 25
I listened to this soundtrack yesterday but it didn't convince me that much. Just to clarify I am a big fan of Zimmer, but from the beginning I was not convinced by the Villeneuve-Zimmer pair. The style of Villeneuve's direction in general, in my opinion, does not fit very well with the music style in which Zimmer manages to express himself at his best. In fact he had not convinced me even in Blade Runner 2049. In any case before giving a final judgment I wait to be able to listen the soundtrack together with the movie. It is still a soundtrack and therefore it's above all the set of the two that has to work.

And unfortunately Zimmer would rather you listened to a few hours of his 'jamming' sessions and experimentations rather than the score. I listened to a few bits of this - seemed largely the same atmospheric stuff, didn't really do anything for me.

Brundlefly 2308
I find it really interesting that so many ideas from the sketchbook don't appear in the actual film score. What is the story behind that? Are some of these ideas intended to be used in Part II only? Or were they just sorted out in the process? The film score is like a concentration of some aspects of the sketchbook. Besides the latter sounds far more abrasive and rough, the film score is more streamlined Zimmer. badbu 94
mhh... MedigoScan 271
Honestly a lot of those missing tracks are just 1 minute long. I can see why some were skipped.\ Plus in some cases tracks were clearly merged (Like Bene Gesserit or Night on Arrakis) edit: Oh I see now. Escape into Ornithopter is taken out of the Ornithopter track (which is like a good chunk of 3 minutes). It goes straight from the Good Luck scene to the Chase into the Dust Storm. Then again I suppose Escape into Ornithopter sounded a lot like the Pauls Dream/Shortening of the Way music already. Just faster-paced. edit: Also all that Ripples in the Sand is missing is an organ overlay. Sounds familiar. bruce marshall

MedigoScan 271
The endcredits started with Pauls Dream. But a shorter part2-focused version with more instrumentation over the vocals.

MedigoScan 271
I think the soundtrack selection so far was descent at least. Zimmer might have excluded some of the longer tracks since they were already covered by the sketchbook. WampaRat 1095
I’m already formulating a custom edit that trims some of the fat off the ost and incorporates the more interesting ideas from the sketchbook. I’ll wait until I see the film (and listen to the Art/Soul score aswell). From what I gather, the ost reflects the film in that it doesn’t really have a finale, so it’s not leaving people blown away by the time it finishes. It makes sense from a narrative point of view. But I understand the frustration from a “listening experience” standpoint as well. When the second film is finally produced, I think we’ll have some terrific 90 mins between the two scores to accompany the entire story.
publicist 4635
I just saw the movie and now i do get better what Zimmer was after, and he nailed the alien-ness of the setting, but musically it's not exactly rewarding. Hans is not very subtle, and especially the crash bang stuff in tandem with the often 'psychotic' layering of the other thematic elements starts to grate after a while. But i give him that it is one of the best concept scores of recent years. Tiburon and blondheim

And I don't think it works that well in the film either (it's far too present). There are definitely cool sounds in there, but it lacks any real shape and definition, at least in film. Hugo 25
on sunday I finally went to see the movie, before I had only listened to the soundtrack and very briefly (only once) waiting to be able to listen to it together with the movie, as it should be, at least for the first listen, without getting too used to it. Actually I have to admit that although it is perhaps not the most memorable of the soundtracks by HZ the whole is not bad at all...it accompanies the movie very well. Wwithout a doubt I find it better than the previous collaboration with Denis Villeneuve in Blade Runner 2049.

Popular Post Thor 5791
It's a great score, but there are some cues that irritate me and will be weeded out in my playlist. For example, "Burning Palms". Everytime I play the soundtrack, and this cue comes on, I glance at my iTunes player to see WTF this is. It just rubs me the wrong way. Very effective in the film, but irritating on album. There is a smokin' hot 50-60 minute album hiding in there somewhere. Drawgoon 79
For me this one falls in the same category as most of his Nolan gigs - stuff that work remarkably well against the visuals but cannot be appreciated (by me) on album. Still, there are some very cool ideas scattered across both albums they released for Dune. I love those that give a sense of standing in a desert landscape, where everywhere I look is just miles and miles of sand dunes: e.g. the first 2:30 of "I See You In My Dreams"; the ephemeral, ethereal whisper/percussion-combo effect starting at 2:34 in "Visions of Chani", the final 1:30 of "Sandstorm". Also love the score's only uplifting moment starting at the 3:30 mark in "Stillsuits".
