Sorry ALIEN and Goldsmith fans, JAWS was one of my first Spielberg films and first Williams score, and it will always remain one of my all-time favourites in either category.

Which classic 70s thriller do you prefer; Spielberg/Williams' Jaws or Scott/Goldsmith's Alien?

That is an appropriate description for Jaws, but by no means is it suitable for the cinematic milestone that Alien is.

I never found Goldsmith’s Alien to be particularly engaging listening. But I own it anyway, out of obligation I guess. Maybe it’ll grow on me someday. Either way, Horner and Goldenthal are more for me.

Alien for both, considering the original score as Goldsmith wrote it (and not the heavily edited and tracked version that ended up in the movie). Alien really has one of the greatest sci-fi/horror scores of all times.

I need to rewatch Alien on a modern TV screen.  I remember it's a very dark movie. I think I never really "saw" it, as some parts are soooo dark.

Centre, and pull back. Track 45 right. Gimme a hard copy, right there.

Try watching it at a cinema, in 70mm.

I'm actually entirely unsure about the choice of movie: Williams score was an easy pick, but since I had to pick a movie, I chose Alien for its superior craft more than anything else.

But why? The Williams works wonders in the movie but as pure music, it ain't that exciting or original. Alien is certainly a more ambitious work.

Very possible. JAWS on both accounts. Hell Aliens is a better score.

This is one of only two circumstances I would ever pick Williams over Goldsmith.

And it's one of few circumstances where you should not do this.
