Popular Post Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6478
Today is history. Batman, the beloved movie, the franchise more or less as we know it to this day was unleashed like a batarang on the world. Blockbusters had been around for at least a decade prior, but it became the prototype for a newer modern blockbuster with its controversial casting, massive salary for a big name star, darker tone, an edgy new-age director, tie-in pop soundtrack and overall merchandising blitz. I think even Disney is a little jealous of all that Batman paraphernalia. About the only thing that's changed since that time is the introduction of cinematic universes, a way to simply expand the blockbuster movie to a blockbuster series. They're basically still making them in the mold of Batman because it simply is the best of its kind. I'm drinking a Diet Coke as I type this and thinking of how Batman is also such a charming product of its time. It really appeals to a male fantasy of the 80s. Batman blows guys away with guns and missiles (Remember, this was acceptable and cool back then--our heroes were Indiana Jones, Rambo etc.), drives a cool hotrod and saves ludicrously attractive screaming blonde women. So no, they don't exactly make them like this anymore unfortunately. They definitely don't score them like this anymore. Elfman's more recent Justice League score and, hell, everything I've seen from Tim Burton in the last 20 years show how the mighty have fallen. But Jack Nicholson as the Joker, the absolutely iconic moments, Anton Furst's stunning Academy Award winning production design and the Elf Man's best score are all preserved in this beautiful 30 year-old time capsule of cinematic greatness. Quintus 5394
It isn't a great movie, but it's entertaining in a trashy extravaganza sort of way. Michael Keaton made a great first time blockbuster Batman. I saw it in '89 at the cinema, the summer that my parents separated. artus_grayboot

SteveMc 2671
The film is what it is. I dig Keaton's Batman, for sure, but Burton's vision can get a bit odd for my taste. I do like Elfman's score. And Nicholson's Joker is legendary.
