TheUlyssesian 2,475
Well Bobby Cannavale is in the movie and he's quite good. But he wouldn't get Netflix to sign a $200 million check to make a 3.5 hr R Rated mob film.

Thor 7,490
Just came back from this. I really liked it; the 3 1/2 hours fly by; it feels much shorter. The 'de-aging' thing works perfectly. You take notice at first, but then you quickly forget it (the war scenes with a young De Niro are so short, and from such a distance, that it's of no consequence whether it's believable or not). If I have any qualm, it's perhaps that it's a tad "dry" -- it doesn't have the mythological 'rise-to-power' aspect of, say, GOODFELLAS. But then I guess that's not its intention either. This definitely needs to be seen on the big screen, if you have the chance. Some great, De Palma-ish one-takes and whatnot.

Thor 7,490
4 minutes ago, Jurassic Shark said: How's the score? It's mostly rock and pop music from the period (as usual with Scorsese), but there are a few stretches -- montage-type -- that have a bit of Robbie Robertson score. Not terribly exciting; some shuffling percussion and a groove, as expected from the The Band main guy (his score to COLOR OF MONEY is in the same territory, although perhaps a bit more melodic). It reminded me a bit of Mark Streitenfeld's AMERICAN GANGSTER theme.

Disco Stu 15,495
I saw this today and really liked it! Another Scorsese exploration of sin, America, power and, basically, how eternity comes for us all, and we’re all destined to be forgotten. Fascinating characters, richly told. It was long, but no one makes a long movie like Scorsese. He just naturally knows how to build scenes that completely pull you in.

publicist 4,643
Saw this on Netflix. A bloom-off-the-rose experience. The whole thing has the odor of finality, it's obviously Scorsese closing the book on a long chapter of american history, but due to many, many contemporaries milking this organized crime topic in quite a similar fashion, everything feels third-hand. It's assured, fast-paced and polished, like you expect from Scorsese, but its content is beyond musty by now.

Edmilson 7,424
It's in portuguese, but if you look it up you'll probably find some of these in English too. Loose translation: "No problem with the fact of The Irishman being a 3h30 movie. But I don't want to watch a movie about three straight white older men directed by a straight white older man." Edmilson 7,424
Don't know about colored, but one can read an homoerotic innuendo on the movie: Pacino's and De Niro's character often sleep on the same room, they give each other a warm embrace on the movie's ending and the whole story can be read as a love triangle, with De Niro divided between Pacino and Pesci. Is the world so wasted that a warm embrace and sleeping in the same room is immediately seen as homoerotic just to prove oneself politically correct and tolerant? The Twitter comment is dumb as shit, but no one should feel like he has to justify the direction by a straight white older man by claiming that the movie could somehow be seen as a tale with homoerotic tendencies. I was just kidding. I wasn't trying to justify anything, just wanted to make a silly joke, after all, one of the reasons I joined JWFan was to have fun (lol). In fact, one of the most interesting aspects on The Irishman is its examination of masculinity, (non romantic) relationships between men and how their lifestyles only led to pain and isolation. Koray Savas 2,251
Got around to watching this today. It was alright. Nothing special, in my opinion, but certainly not a bad film. Unless Silence is an exception (still haven’t seen it), Scorsese has been mostly dull this past decade.
Jay 37,336
Yea basically my thoughts as well. It was fine, had plenty of exciting moments, but ultimately didn't end strongly, and I think won't leave much of a lasting impression in my mind. Edmilson 7,424
I really loved The Irishman, it's my favorite movie of 2019, and I don't think nothing will surpass it. But, then again, I'm a sucker for Scorsese's crime epics, like Goodfellas, Casino, etc. I haven't seen Silence or his countless docs about classic rockstars, but I liked The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island. Hugo, on the other hand, was a little dull.
