James Bond is better than everything

In a hotel room in Cambridge, UK about to zonk out for the night and The Living Daylights is on ITV4.

It's a bit cheesy (I think Bond just stole the stair car from Arrested Development) but dat Barry score tho...

And now the Bond girl just whacked him in the head with a pillow. She's not a very good actress...

She is very good at playing the innocent and scared girl from the slums of Eastern Europe, she is a very unique Bond girl. And she underlines the straight attitude and detached character of Dalton's Bond, by contrasting him.

If the film has a flaw, of which there are very few, it's that the script calls for Dalton to be outright humorous and smiling ear to ear occasionally, which doesn't fit his Bond at all.

That was the first time I'd ever seen any of The Living Daylights, I believe. I've listened to the Rhino expansion of the score loads, though!

As far as films go, I've only seen the first four Connerys, then everything from Goldeneye forward.

I gotta watch em all!

It’s a top 5 Bond for me.  Bearing in mind, my love of a Bond film rarely has much to do with its “objective” qualities.  Or a better way to put it: my criteria for what makes a great Bond are very different from how I evaluate any other kind of film.

I think we’re the only two people with Golden Gun in our top 5 :D

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME

THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS

GOLDENEYE

SPECTRE

Lately though whenever I’ve felt like I was in a Bond mood I’ve been reaching for For Your Eyes Only.  I’ve watched it like 5 times in the last year.  I love it!  Might climb my ranking above Goldfinger.

Funny enough, I couldn't stand it!

Goldfinger is just fine.  From Russia With Love is the best Connery Bond.

My Top 5 favorites:

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

GoldenEye

From Russia With Love

The Spy Who Loved Me

Thunderball

I'm watching For Your Eyes Only right now.   I love the identigraph scene.  The giant computer that takes up a room,  Bond and Q working late to identify the lead henchman.  It leads directly into Bond going to Cortina, which is one of the all-time best Bond locations.  I love this movie!

The OHMSS ski chase has great music but is boring as heck.  Overrated movie if you ask me.

ATAC to St. Cyril's!  ATAC to St. Cyril's!   I love that this is a Bond movie where the plot is moved forward by a parrot.

Living Daylights has one of the best openings of anything I've ever seen. The car chase with the guy going off a cliff while Bond escapes in a parachute and lands on that babe's yacht as she immediately proceeds to offer him a drink and her sexy body. What a legend.

I have a top nine “classic Bond” list — nothing against Brosnan and Craig, they’re just in a different headspace for me.

1. Goldfinger    Connery #3
2. From Russia with Love    Connery #2
3. Dr. No    Connery #1
4. You Only Live Twice    Connery #5
5. Thunderball    Connery #4
6. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service    Lazenby
7. Live and Let Die    Moore #1
8. The Spy Who Loved Me    Moore #3
9. The Living Daylights    Dalton #1

I had to cut it off at nine because there didn’t seem to be any serious contender for the tenth spot.

It's funny, I LOVE Roger Moore, he's my favorite Bond hands down, but people who don't like him as much as I do tend like Live and Let Die more than I do.

My Moore Ranking

1. The Man With the Golden Gun

2. For Your Eyes Only

3. The Spy Who Loved Me

4. Octopussy

5. Moonraker

6. Live and Let Die

7. A View to a Kill

I wasn’t old enough to see any in theaters prior to GoldenEye, and Moore and Dalton were seriously pooh-poohed at the time*, so I rented VHSes of the Connery movies in order until I got bored.

* - Still are? I suppose they always try to say the current Bond is the best since the iconic Sean Connery.

Well, there are a number of factors which make it so memorable that most people have to at least give it a shout-out. The first is Jane Seymour. There are many beautiful Bond women, and many (most?) have better roles, but just watching Jane Seymour at all is something of a transcendental experience. (And they threw in Madeline Smith as a very nice bonus.)

Also, the name of the film stands out because its theme song stands out.

I'm still surprised Jason hasn't seen a lot of Bond films
