It’s a little known fact that talented Queen guitarist Brian May is also an accomplished film composer (I think I read that in a Sony Classical post)

He also did a badass cover of the Star Fleet theme with Van Halen.

Just don't confuse him with the astrophysicist. That would be ridiculous.

The whole record is good. BLUES BREAKERS is the standout track.

The best Queen solo record, is still the first one.

Are you referring to the composer of MAD MAX? That's a different Brian May.

true - what does that say about your albums if you can’t even field a truly great comp?

That the fans ain't got a clue what truly great music is.

Agreed. Is BRIGHTON ROCK on GREATEST HITS? No.

Is THE PROPHET'S SONG on GREATEST HITS? Nope.

Is TIE YOUR MOTHER DOWN on GREATEST HITS? Er...let's see. Sorry.

Is IT'S LATE on GREATEST HITS? No way, Jose.

Is WHITE MAN, TEO TORRIATE, or FATHER TO SON on GREATEST HITS? Hmm...you're shit outta luck.

You're right. I've known it, since November 10, 1978 (yes, I bought JAZZ on the day of release).

It seems to me, that categories of fan (Queen, or otherwise), fall into three:

1/ casual: these have a GH record, and that's enough for them. They sing along to WE WILL ROCK YOU, in the car, but that's as deep as the rabbit-hole goes.

2/ ambitious (thank you @Brundlefly, for that!): these have more than two records, but still only listen to "side one, because it's more accessible". To these fans, a tracks like FUN IT, or COMING SOON, would mean absolutely nothing.

Then there's...

3/ hardcore: they own all the records, they have seen the band live, and trade fours on which B-side is better; SOUL BROTHER, or A HUMAN BODY.

I'm category three: I know every song of them including the B-sides. I have never been on a Queen concert, but that's because I was born in 1997.

And by the way, Soul Brother and A Human Body would have been decent additions for The Game which was way too short as an album. Talking about category three, I even integrated those tracks into the album on my media player:

  1. Play the Game
  2. Dragon Attack
  3. Another One Bites the Dust
  4. Need Your Loving Tonight
  5. Soul Brother
  6. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
  7. Rock It (Prime Jive)
  8. Don't Try Suicide
  9. A Human Body
  10. Sail Away Sweet Sister
  11. Coming Soon
  12. Save Me

...and then there's category 1 1/2.

These people think that WE WILL ROCK YOU kind of sucks, but will happily sing along to BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (complete with WAYNE'S WORLD head shakes), or, perhaps, ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST, or, maybe even KILLER QUEEN. They like Queen, but take no real interest in the band, except to go on silly film music social networks, to say that some of their songs are not very good. Avoid.

I could narrow the greatest hits albums down to a reasonable 51 minute program.  (GH III is pretty bad - mostly live stuff and remixes).

Bohemian Rhapsody

Another One Bites the Dust

Killer Queen

Bicycle Race

Don't Stop Me Now

Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Somebody to Love

Play the Game

We Are the Champions

Under Pressure

I Want It All

I Want to Break Free

It's a Hard Life

Who Wants to Live Forever

If I wanted to fill out the disc, here are four songs that I find fine.

We Will Rock You

Flash

Fat Bottom Girls

You're My Best Friend

I've never looked at who wrote Queen songs before five minutes ago, but based on that list, for the most part I really only care for Mercury.
