Anyone else obsessed with home security?

The Train Station

Lately I've been giving my house an overdue facelift, but with that comes the added but necessary upgrades to home security, because suddenly onlookers think you're rich. That means heavy duty doors, break-resistant screen doors, stronger windows, CCTV, tougher deadbolts, etc.

Now, I'm not so naive to believe all that's an effective barrier to a committed burglar, since they always find a vulnerability and a way in. But I'm increasingly concerned about the government recklessly kicking people off their dole benefits (or at least quarantining their income through compulsory cashless welfare debit), which will likely lead to spikes in break-ins by under-skilled junkies looking for a few valuables to snatch, so I think a more robust home security system will at least make for a more effective psychological deterrent.

Because I need to protect my CDs, laserdiscs, video tapes and tube TV.

I’m content with mine. No need for all the high end equipment.

Not in Belgium where cities are where the poor and underprivileged live.

Drax is part of the rich Aussie elite, Alex. He probably doesn't go into the bad parts of town much.

He does seem to be a bit out of touch with reality. I suppose watching Fox News babes all day long can do that to a man.

At least here in America I've never lived in or been to a city without a noticeable homeless population.

You mean bums.

He's never tasted desperate. He's Jerry Drax, the prince of Australia. You'd have to go a thousand miles to meet someone who didn't know his name. So, don't come down here with your anger trying to prove something to yourself. This is a world you'll never understand. And you always fear what you don't understand.

That is so weird. If you live in the Sydney or Melbourne CBD or innercity, it's only because you're super wealthy enough to afford the exorbitant property values. Plus most of the work is in the CBD, so the closer you live there, the less you have to commute, which is highly coveted here. The further out west in Sydney, the more "undesirable" it is because that's generally where the working class and underprivileged live. I happen to live in Sydney's southwest suburbs, which historically has been regarded as a bit of a disadvantaged area, but it's become much more gentrified in the last few years as a result of urban renewal and more up-market 'burbs shooting up. The prices are still unaffordable, but I happen to own three of them in this area.
