Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
The Marine Band is currently on a West Coast tour. Looks like Williams made a surprise appearance as guest conductor for their stop at the UCLA Royce Hall, Wednesday night October 23rd. Most of these pictures come from a tweet by composer Peter Boyer. If anyone else comes across other info/pics, please post them in this thread! For instance, Boyer's tweet doesn't make clear exactly what or how much Williams actually conducted. It would be cool if he conducted the entire second half of the program (see below), but he might just have come up for an encore. I hope videos of him conducting make it to the band's official Youtube channel eventually! Quote What a thrill to have my piece “Silver Fanfare” performed by the United States @marineband alongside the music of John Williams, and to have Mr. Williams appear as a surprise guest conductor! Truly an exciting moment for a composer. #johnwilliams #uclaroycehall Peter Boyer's tweet SteveMc, Fabulin, Cerebral Cortex and 6 others 7
Popular Post Incanus 5,713
Johnny is looking very sharp there. And Thomas Hooten performed With Malice Toward None. I love that particular trumpet and orchestra arrangement. SteveMc, The Illustrious Jerry, Disco Stu and 2 others
Popular Post Thor 7,478
Nice! What a treat for the audience members -- to have Williams "fall in your lap" without all the mayhem of the rabid European fans killing each other over Vienna tickets. It's nice that he has such love for the marine band, but I wish he'd write a piece for an air force band too, since that is his own background. Funny how this is the same concert hall where that album was also recorded! I would love to have heard this live performance. And it's especially appropriate since Hooten was once a member of the Marine Band. Incanus
Disco Stu 15,495
Kind of an unfortunate update to this. Turns out, that concert was LIVE VIDEO STREAMED by UCLA's music department. But I'm guessing no JWFan could've known Williams would be there, so no one grabbed it From the Marine Band's twitter, looks like John conducted the 1941 march and the imperial march. Also, here's another picture, I've added it to my original post too. SteveMc

Popular Post Biodome 714
According to the band's Facebook page, John conducted March from 1941 and the Imperial March A few more photos: 4 hours ago, Modest Expectations said: Pity they cannot be emailed. There is a phone number, so we could ask them whether there is a recording of this concert that could be streamed again, or something. I would gladly do it, but I cannot pull off a convincing patriotic American with a German phone number and a Polish-British accent. We should totally ask them! It's very likely that the stream has been recorded and is accessible to people with a link to it. The streaming site says that they have plenty of videos in their channels, it's just that they are private.
