Roland Emmerich regrets making Independence Day: Resurgence

It's a shame we couldn't at least get a new Arnold score out of it, that probably would've been the only redeeming factor. I hate that they completely replaced the aliens with CGI models. The practical effects in the original are fantastic.

I'm glad he stayed away.

Steven Spielberg (anybody heard of him?) said that he made LAST CRUSADE, to apologise for TOD. He's also pointed out the many faults, in 1941, and he's gone on record saying that he still doesn't like HOOK.

A director is entitled to not like their work.

Seem to recall him also saying that one of the reasons he made Schindler's List was that he felt the depiction of the Nazis in Raiders and Last Cruade had been 'too cartoonish'.

Spielberg never says anything about Always. Stand by your work, Steven.

He hates Temple of Doom more. Which is so daaaaark because Lucas was going through a divorce.

I thought he only really made Last Crusade because he promised George he’d do a third and Lucasfilm badly needed a band aid from Howard the Duck. SS had his heart set on Rain Man at the time.

Thinking back, what Raiders and TOD got away with for PG-rated flicks was pretty extraordinary.

TOD, along with Gremlins that came out that same year, were the responsibles for the invention of the PG-13 rating after parents complained that those movies were too violent for their young kids.

These days, pretty much every action/adventure blockbuster is PG-13, while the PG rating is reserved mainly for animations and explicitly kids movies (like those Disney remake flicks). Even movies that used to be PG are now PG13, like Star Wars.

I don't think Howard the Duck is Lucasfilm's. I read somewhere a long time ago (could I be more vague) that Lucas produced the film purely as a favour to Huyck & Willard as they had written TOD for him. The film belongs to Universal.

It was the '89 Batman that led to the creation of its equivalent rating (12) in the UK.

I'm surprised he's never remade it with Mark Rylance. Or how about a sequel? A Rain Man cinematic universe could be pretty cool.

Well Dustin Hoffman is #cancelled and Cruise is #problematic so a soft reboot maybe.

What’s Valeria Golino up to these days?

It changed everything.

If that was truly the problem, then why do people always return for Star Wars?

Because the Prequels are masterpieces compared to the terminator sequels.

Also, they’re for kids.

if Rian Johnson would apologize, now that I could understand.

I honestly believe the guy had the right idea.

Final result might've been flawed, but I don't believe he's got much to apologize for at all.

Alternative would've been unoriginal committee-made movies over and over.

I liked to think he tried to steer away from that.

Even the Season 7 finale to Stargate SG-1 was better than Independence Day Resurgence.

For some reason I read that to mean as if Stargate wasn't very good either.

But I'd say that is actually pretty excellent; and better than most movies coming out these days!

Because I have yet to see a truly dark and dreary Star Wars film that doesn't have anything to like about it. ;)

(Also... I hope that day never comes!)

Spaceballs had a ton of cursing including an epic F bomb and it was rated PG.

I wore out the opening credits of my Batman Returns tape because I obsessively listened to this part over and over again:

I still expect the video to get all jittery and fucked up whenever I watch that part.

What I meant was that two-parter episode "Lost City" was just a relatively obscure sci-fi TV affair from 2003, but as an alien invasion story, it outclassed a lavish Hollywood production from 2016 that was the sequel to the biggest alien invasion film ever made.

Geez, Louise! I wore out my VHS copy of BASIC INSTINCT, by pausing it.

Many actresses have done full-frontal nudity but a reveal of, erm, the 'vertical smile' is still pretty rare outside of porn ... Eva Green in The Dreamers and Rosario Dawson in Trance are the only two springing to mind.

Ah, gotcha!

And yep, I fully agree. :D

I saw Midway and I loved it.

The screenplay is weak, the dialogue cliched, and the characters are a bit 2 dimensional but god damn the action sequences are awesome.

It’s more a docudrama than a compelling character based narrative but I found it very enjoyable as a history and plane nut.

I’ll take films like this over superhero messes any day of the week thank you.

now, Ridley Scott needs to hurry up and make his Battle of Britain film.

Spitfires 🤤

Better than the 1989 film at least.

You're right, of course, Steef. BATMAN RETURNS, is, in every way, a much better made film, than BATMAN, but...the '89 film has a lot more significance, for me, personally. For that reason, I'll always come back to it.

The time I watched Batman 89 in the non-VHS era, the framing seemed all wrong to me since it was widescreen

 If memory serves, BATMAN was the first mainstream film, to be presented in its original aspect ratio, on VHS. It was even given prominence, on the case.

It looks shite, tbh. Almost like a parody of an Emmerich film!

ah there’s nothing in it as bad as something like CA:Civil War and it’s doesn’t have the dumb humour of Guardians of the Galaxy or whatever but diving bombing an Aircraft Carrier looks fucking awesome

Funny, the previews never mentioned Emmerich’s involvement. I didn’t even know he had a new film in production.

But then again, there’s supposedly a new Charlie’s Angels film coming out next week and I haven’t seen ANY advertisement for it at all.

They released a few trailers and a theme song by some pop divas, geared specially for teen girls on Twitter... But other than that, I haven't seen anything for Charlie's Angels either. The movie will probably bomb next week.

Unlike most of Emmerich’s films, TOD is actually a very good movie, 2nd best IJ film.
