Nice interview and it gives some interesting details about his relationship with Göransson and the overall sound of the show. He clarified that the theme I've been calling the "Mandalore theme" is clearly an extension of Bo Katan's material, so it's a fitting name, since it represents Bo's journey through the season to become the ruler of Mandalore. The music used through the podcast is mostly from Book of Boba Fett and some bits from S2 and S3, but everything has already been released as far as I recognized. michael_grig

Knight of Ren 775
Great! Could that mean that it's finally coming this Friday?? Anyway, looking at the tracklist it seems that all the important tracks are there. The action set-pieces from The Pirate, The Spies and The Return seem to be mostly complete, and those last 3 tracks in particular are going to be great! The only important bit apparently missing are the opening minutes of The Spies, including the title card, which features a cool interplay between the Recorder riff and one of Gideon's motifs, but it could just be that the app doesn't pick it up. Knight of Ren 775
I already did a more detailed breakdown of the tracks, as some of them are made out of several different cues, and in the case of Sleeping Beauties, from different episodes. Chapter 21: The Pirate Imperial Thinking Adelphi Jukebox Siege of Nevarro – in the episode it segues into an unreleased cue, which in turn segues into... Open Fire Below Walk the Way Together – the episode has some some unreleased material at the beginning of the cue Sleeping Beauties [0:14 – 2:34] – the epsiode has some extra unreleased material at the end Chapter 22: Guns for Hire All is Fair In Love and War Plazir Royal Hall Battle Droids A Challenge [0:00 – 2:17] – the episode has some material at the end not on the OST A Challenge [2:17 – End] Chapter 23: The Spies Welcomed Guests Langskib [0:00 – 1:37] Langskib [1:37 – End] The Great Forge – a bit longer in episode Chapter 24: The Return Sleeping Beauties [0:00 – 0:14] Sleeping Beauties [2:34 – End] – it’s a bit longer in episode Let’s Take Back Our Planet – quite extended in episode, with some unreleased material at the beginning, and then a couple of minutes inserted at 1:25 of the OST Stronger Together Forever Forged in My Heart mattrushing02 and HB Potlood
Jay 37,249
Is it possible that middle part of Sleeping Beauties was written for Episode 8 but not used there, and then also tracked into Episode 5? Or is it obvious he just jumbled up the order for listening purposes
Knight of Ren 775
It could be, since there is a cue in between those two sections of Sleeping Beauties in Chapter 24, so perhaps it was intended to be used there and then got replaced, and Shirley decided to use that section at the end of Chapter 21. Popular Post Knight of Ren 775
Volume 2 of the score for the third season of The Mandalorian is here, and I think Joseph Shirley did a fantastic job on continuing Göransson's soundscape and thematic ideas, while providing his own strong themes to support the narrative of the season, and I think these two albums show what a great composer he can be. As I did with Volume 1, I will do track by track analysis on the different themes that appear, to help you appreciate the narrative and themtaic development a bit more. Feel free to listen to the album as you read along, and I hope you enjoy! Adelphi Jukebox The album starts with this source cue, featured in episode 5. It blends electronic beats and some vocal elements making up for a fun cue, but not quite my thing. Imperial Thinking The first score cue is the one that opens episode 5, and the composer uses the first couple of minutes to build expectations through the use of low-key beats and the presence of an instrument that reminds me of a mandolin or perhaps a cimbalom? The music starts to turn a bit darker, and when the pirates start firing upon the citizens of Nevarro, the composer brings back his theme for Gorian Shard at 2:10, presented in the very first episode of the season, and here unleashed with all its choral force, joined by a string ostinato that resembles some of Gideon’s material, perhaps hinting at the later reveal that they’re working together. The title card enters at 2:53, with a brief reference to the Western motif joined by some unusual pirate-y instrumentation. Siege on Nevarro And with very little space to breathe, the score throws us into one of the big set pieces of the season, the fight between the mandalorians and Gorian Shard’s pirates. The first 1:30 build upon a string motif, slowly adding more instruments and a couple of great references to Bo’s material. At 0:46 we can hear the Mandalore theme which appears a couple of times more, sometimes joined by Bo’s stinger and followed by Bo Katan’s own theme at 1:20. The cue slows down a bit, and allows Gorian Shard’s theme to be played in full at 1:48, played by choir, brass and joined by some unusual percussion and sound effects, giving it a sort of sea-shanty vibe that fits the pirate king and his minions. Mando’s stinger breaks through, and at 2:47 we are presented with a powerful and dramatic statement of the Gorian Shard theme. An epic union of Mando’s western motif and the Recorder riff pops at 3:35, as Din and the rest of the mandalorians take the upper hand in their confrontation against the pirates. The next couple of minutes build the tension of the fight with some frantic string passages and aggressive percussion, sometimes joined by references to the recorder riff (4:41) or the Mandalore theme (4:50), until a small pause which soon leads to a fantastic confrontation between Gorian Shard’s theme and the Recorder riff at 5:14, which finishes the cue with a blast! Open Fire Below The resolution of the confrontation against the pirates starts with some dissonant electronic passages, joined by abrasive percussion, until the Mandalorian Culture A theme joins the action at 0:23, alongside a dynamic string ostinato. At 0:44 we even hear the theme played on some kind of bagpipe, as the people of Nevarro arrive to stop the pirates that are trying to flee the city. The string ostinato picks up and we are presented with a climatic statement of the Gorian Shard theme at 1:23, as the pirate and his forces are defeated. Walk the Way Together This is the first softer cue on the album, and it opens with a mysterious statement of the Mythosaur theme, which soon leads to a complete presentation of the Mandalore theme, now strongly connected to Bo Katan, and representing both her journey through the season and her claim to be the ruler of Mandalore. The Mandalore theme incorporates traces of her theme, and we properly hear her theme in a triumphant statement at 1:44 to close the cue and the episode. All’s Fair in Love and War This track starts with some electronic sounds mixed with orchestral passages, with a mysterious string idea appearing at around the 1:10 minute mark. At 1:38 we hear a noble statement of Bo Katan’s theme, used to represent the reintroduction of Axe Woves and the rest of the Nite Owls. The last part of the cue presents the title card, with the western motif joined by some electronic beats. Plazir Royal Hall Another source cue, this time for the royal hall of Plazir-15. It apparently features “Sasha Flute”, which is the name Lizzo gives her flute, so I guess it’s her playing it. The cue mostly plays around with the sound of the flute and some weird electronic beats, and as it happens with the first source cue, it’s fun, but not really my thing. Anyway, I’m glad that Shirley could fit these in the release, as they showcase a different side of his composing abilities. Battle Droids This is probably the less interesting cue of the bunch, and it’s mostly a short action piece build around electronic beats and a generic string ostinato. Not much to say here. A Challenge Approximately the first 2 minutes of the track underscore Bo Katan’s challenge against Axe Woves, who refuses to acknowledge her as their leader. Shirley uses Bo’s sound motif, used extensively in her introduction sequence in S2, and joins it by some loud, dissonant synth passages and wild percussion that build the tension during the challenge. During Din’s speech, at 2:15, we are presented with an extended rendition of the Recorder riff, in its traditional form until the western motif and the Mandalorian Culture themes appear at 3:27. Bo’s sound motif builds to a complete statement of the Mandalore theme at 3:52, which in a similar way to what happens in “Walk The Way Together” leads into Bo Katan’s theme at 4:04, this glorious statement underscoring the moment she gains back the Dark Saber, thus making her the true ruler of Mandalore. It’s so clever how the composer has been playing around with these two ideas to represent Bo, her journey and the planet of Mandalore, and the development of these two ideas is probably my favorite part of the season in terms of music. Welcomed Guests Synth passages and some mysterious chord progressions build into the appearance of the Mandalore theme at 0:17, which appears again at 0:51 in a more noble variation, followed by Bo’s theme at 1:02, complete with an orchestral flourish to end the theme. Aggressive percussion enters the scene, joined by the Mandalorian Culture A theme and later the B theme as well, as the different tribes start to come together. The tension between them is palpable, and Shirley supports it with synths passages and beats until the Armorer appears and tries to calm everyone down at 2:45. Here Shirley brings back his Mandalorian Culture theme, used in The Living Waters and You’re One of Us, joined by the western motif. I think this motif has been used to represent the tribe, but more specifically the Armorer, and it’s a nice new addition to the soundscape of the series. Langskib This is a non-thematic cue which plays around with exotic percussion and manipulated sound effects that represent the mysterious group of surviving mandalorians they encounter on the planet. The noble interlude accompanies them swearing loyalty to Bo Katan, and the softer material at the end plays when they see the plants growing under the surface. The Great Forge This is one of the big set pieces of the season, and it underscores the last 10 minutes or so of episode 7. The first minutes build tension with some unnerving synth beats, frantic string passages, and many references to some of the themes. At 0:47 we can hear the Mandalorian Culture A theme, then the Heroics motif plays a couple of times at 1:18, joined by hints of the Mandalore theme, leading to a complete statement of Mando’s Heroic Fanfare, still confronted with the dissonant synth passages. It’s particularly great how at 2:18 Shirley joins the B section of the fanfare with the Mandalore theme, before going into a full blow statement of the Western motif. Dissonant synths enter the scene at 2:50, when its revealed that they have fallen into an ambush, and Din is separated from the rest of the group. The tension builds until Moff Gideon receives a bad-ass return with an imposing rendition of his theme at 3:24, joined by the secondary idea on strings, and later the hip-hop beats that represent the character. His music develops until the 5:00 minute mark, where the frantic strings are confronted with the Mandalorian Culture A theme, as the group tries to make an escape. At 6:16 the music turns tragic, to represent Paz Vizsla’s heroic sacrifice, where he stays behind to fight the troopers, allowing the rest of the group to escape. He has apparently defeated all the troopers, but a new idea enters with brute force at 7:11, making clear that he has no way out. This choral motif represents Gideon’s Praetorian Guards, and it mercilessly attacks the listener as the guards put Vizsla down, killing him. Sleeping Beauties A playful synth briefly opens the cue, before diving into a lengthy sequence of tension. It’s a bit generic, but the composer keeps it interesting with the presence of unusual sound effects. A stinger disrupts the tension at 2:35 before going again into more tension passages. Let’s Take Back Our Planet The cue pick ups the tension in a similar fashion to what we heard at the beginning of The Great Forge, with synth beats joined by the two Mandalorian Culture themes, and a brief reference to the Mandalore theme. At 1:04 a trumpet motif builds the tension as the mandalorians led by Bo Katan charge against Gideons troopers, culminating in a fantastic statement of the western motif at 1:10 as the two armies clash. The air battle is intercut with Gideon fight against Din, and at 1:25 the Praetorian Guards theme enters again with all of its choral might, joined by some dissonant string passages. At 1:47, an idea not fully heard yet in the season makes an heroic appearance, as Grogu comes to help Din. It’s the theme that has represented their bond since the very first season, and it’s one of my favorite ideas in the whole show. The Praetorian Guards theme appears again and leads to a dramatic action passage which is quite similar to what underscored Paz Vizsla’s sacrifice in The Great Forge, joined by hints of the Mandalore theme. The Praetorian Guards theme doesn’t allow for a moment of calm and it brutally returns at 2:46, briefly intercut with an action variant on The Child’s theme at 2:52, but soon the choral presence takes over, leading to a deranged variation on Gideon’s material at 3:08. His themes fight against the Mandalore theme at 3:24, which properly takes over at 3:47, as Bo comes to the rescue and confronts Gideon, Dark Saber in hand. The track culminates with one last appearance of the Praetorian Guards theme at 4:09. Stronger Together The cue briefly presents a heroic statement of Mando’s Fanfare at the very beginning, which is soon overtaken by the Praetorian Guards choral motif, later both themes fighting each other. The dissonant synths from The Great Forge is joined by a dramatic interplay between Moff Gideon’s Theme and the Mandalore theme, which later turns tragic, as Gideon apparently defeats Bo, destroying the Dark Saber. But she is not alone, and mandalorians are stronger together, and Shirley begins one last frantic, heroic passage of music at 2:39, which builds the tension as the imperial ship comes down upon the facility, here Gideon’s electronic beats fighting against Mando’s Heroic Fanfare. The ship crashes and the fire apparently consumes everything, including Gideon and our heroes, but at 4:00 a triumphant emotional statement of Din & Grogu’s theme appears in full, as he protects Din and Bo from the flames. It’s a callback to a similar moment in S1, during A Warrior’s Death, and Shirley presents a similar arrangement of the idea, which never fails to give me chills. Brilliant! Forever Forged In My Heart Once the fight is over, mandalorians are once more able to inhabit the planet of Mandalore, starting with the baptism ceremony of one of the foundlings, closing the circle with the sequence that opened the season. The beginning reminds me of the percussive beats that played in The Living Waters, and the motif that appears there, that I said it’s related to the Mandalorian Culture and the Armorer appears at 0:51. This leads to a soft, emotional rendering of Mando’s Fanfare and the Recorder riff, with some hints to The Child’s theme mixed in. At 2:59 Grogu glances into the Living Waters of Mandalore, and we hear a bright and mysterious statement of the Mythosaur theme, as we travel through the waters and see the creature open his eye. The music gradually builds into an emotional statement of the Mandalore Theme, which culminates in one the most triumphant statements of the Mandalorian Culture A theme we’ve heard so far at 3:55. The following couple of minutes are essentially extended peaceful variations on the main Mando Fanfare, with the theme becoming more triumphant at 6:23, joined by the Rhodes motif. And to send off the season in a beautiful and emotional way, the composer joins the Rhodes motif and the Western motif with a theme not heard in this season until now, the Razor Crest Fanfare, heard in the end of the credits suite, arranged in a similar fashion to how the theme played during Chapter 4, in season 1, giving us a peaceful closure to the story, for now… Feel free to share your thoughts, or any correction or addition I may have missed. Jay 37,249
While watching Episode 8 on Wednesday night, I noticed a lot of cool score I wanted to have on album! I'm glad the OST album for the second half of the season is already out. I've listened to it twice but haven't analyzed it much yet. Looking forward to revisiting while following along with @Knight of Ren's post above. One aspect I will say that really stands out from the album is the great pirate music for that pirate bad guy, it's SO fun! The choir is great there, and also the choir is great for those red guard guys from the last 2 episodes too. Joseph Shirley did a really good job scoring this season of television; I will watch his career with great interest! enderdrag64

Compare this with the music as seen here from S2 (not released) Time stamped for ease but the entire 6 minutes is the track
MedigoScan 324
Oh yeah that definitely feels like a bit of tracking was involved But worthwhile tracking.
Tydirium 1,166
What's with the fact that the new Bo Katan theme and the Dr. Hemlock theme from Bad Batch are the exact same, save for the last note*? Is this some sort of inside joke between Kevin Kiner and Ludwig Göransson/Joseph Shirley? And if that weren't weird enough, both themes premiered in episodes that aired the same day: March 1 (S3E1 of Mando, S2E11 of Bad Batch). *EDIT: It turns out even the last note is the same; it’s just up an octave in the Bo Katan theme… Yavar Moradi and Gabriel Bezerra

Like the Imperial theme in Andor being very similar to Vader's new one from Kenobi, I guess everyone is hitting the same walls and creating similar themes. Popular Post CGCJ 392
Sabam has updated with new 'THE MANDALORIAN' entries, presumably for the third series, which credit some additional composers: Nathan David - Also worked on the second series. Max Sandler - Also worked on first two series and Book of Boba Fett. Matthew Cohen - Seems to be new, credited on Battle Droids & Sleeping Beauties. Nicholas Fitzgerald - Credited as editor on the soundtrack releases. Jay, enderdrag64, Gabriel Bezerra and 2 others

Popular Post Jay 37,249
The compilation style albums we got for season 2 and 3 really disappoint me. I loved the episodic albums season 1 got. enderdrag64, Trope and Yavar Moradi

Castor 0
Hello ! yes this season 3 album is great, a lot of very nice themes. Unfortunately I didin't find one of the greatest cue of the show. It's the music right before the starts of "Let's Take Back Our Planet" on episode 8. It can also be heard during Nevarro's street battle on episode 5. Do I need another listen or do you confirm it's not on the released album (volume 2) ? I have extracted and edited this music from the episode 5 audio to show you what I'm talking about. May I join a wav file to my message or is it forbidden ? Thanks
