Ludwig Göransson & Joseph Shirley's THE MANDALORIAN (2019-present)

I heard that MOTR quote instantly, too. What an odd choice. That’s not even close to being the Resistance. Those guys would maybe have kids in the Resistance. It’d be just as appropriate or more to reference the Rebel fanfare. Oh well. It was fun. Actually, I say do more of this. It’s a better tune than anything else in this series, and this kind of referencing would manifest musically what every other aspect of the series does: traffic in Star Wars iconography and tropes without really creating any cohesive new vision as yet.

Why would they quote the Milennium Falcon fanfare? ;)

Watch and find out! ;)

It's better when following along with the adventure of the week than binged anyway.

Spoiler

reusing s1

I watched 2x01 last night and thought the end credits sounded a little different, but figured it was probably in my head

I always thought the credits sounded weaker in s1 than the released track. I don't think I had that problem with these two, maybe they adjusted the mix.

For those who have seen Chapter 10: The Passenger, listen carefully at the 34:20 mark. Ludwig Göransson uses a variation of Maestro John Williams’ March of the Resistance; it is quoted in the strings. Very cool homage. Also, considering that Leia would later found the Resistance within the New Republic, it makes sense that Göransson would link the theme with two New Republic X-Wing pilots.

I just saw previous posts. I was not the only one who discovered this.

The more I think about it, the more I think this was a smart way to approach the sensitive subject of when and where to use Williams, particularly given that the easiest theme to justify using in Season 1 would have been the Force theme, which has been exceptionally well-worn in recent years.  I'm just as glad we didn't get a "Binary Sunset" quote to accompany the floating mudhorn, for example.  (And Giacchino emphasized the potential pitfalls of putting that theme in another composer's hands.)

This Easter egg may have been specific and nerdy enough to open the door to other not-so-obvious winks, which would be far more enjoyable in this era of abundant Star Wars music than just slathering on familiar arrangements.  I still have my issues with Goransson's approach, and I wish he honored the Williams idiom more often than he does—themes or not—but this method of weaving in the familiar is growing on me.

Next stop: droid motif! :woop:

I loved this episode and I really liked the music in this one, especially Bo Katan's theme. It sounds kind of similar to Mando's theme but it has its own agressive industrial twist, which makes it something of its own, and the variation when they are attacking the freighter is so cool!

I really hope they do a mid-season score release next week (like they did for Season 7 of Clone Wars).

And if Ahsoka finally appears, I really hope we hear some hint to her theme, but that's just me dreaming.

I figured that'd be the case, considering there's a lot less new music this season, and it would be ridiculous to charge $10 for like 15 minutes of music per episode. I imagine they could easily fit all of the music from the first four episodes into a single traditional 60-80-minute album presentation.

So I just discovered the season 2, volume 1 CD is now working through Shazam. I tried one of the suspense scenes at the end of Chapter 11.

Do your stuff, people!  :P

What does "Ship o hoj" mean?

Perhaps a misspelling of Ship Ahoy?

Or some other (Star Wars?) language version of it or something

Thanks for actually providing the URL instead of just the information!

For future reference, this is all you have to do.  Take the URL:

https://www.shazam.com/track/545753557/ship-o-hoj-mandalorians

And remove the words so you just have the ID#:

https://www.shazam.com/track/545753557

Then, change the ID# by 1 in both directions and submit, and keep repeating, and eventually you'll find all the tracks, potentially after skipping over other albums that they were adding to their DB at the same time

13 Tracks is not a lot, but Ill take what i can get.

I was surprised how much music was being recognized as tracked from season 1.

Still, there's a handful of new cues that aren't being recognised for the new release, so that's a shame. I really like the chapter 10 cue in the ruined Razor Crest where the frog pleads with Mando to help her, but that wasn't identified. And obviously the March of the Resistance omission is annoying (but understandable).

I wonder if reuse fees are responsible for the less frequent releases and for keeping the tracklist theoretically short.  I say theoretically, because I won't commit to a final tracklist until it's revealed.

Even if Ludwig spruced the tracks up for the show, it would still be the union performances done last year.

I have finished the first season of this, it was quite nice and relaxing to watch. The main theme I would probably consider to be the best I've heard on TV in the last twenty years.

So. Did Göransson provide the sketches for the orchestral arrangement of said theme, or was an orchestrator brought in to do it?

He actually orchestrated the entire thing himself as he was writing it.  Watch this 8 minute youtube video, it will explain it completely (and is a terrific watch regardless)

I actually already watched that video a couple of nights ago. In it, Ludwig doesn't really say specifically that he actually wrote for the individual instruments involved in the orchestral "JW homage" arrangement of the theme. It's one thing to say that he wanted the brass to sound like traditional Star Wars, but that doesn't necessarily mean he actually wrote the sheets for that section of the orchestra. I'm just wondering how well-equipped, musically, Goransson really is. Because I think that being capable of writing properly and convincingly for an orchestra by himself raises him to another level - higher than say your typical experimental rock musician working in film and TV.

I mean the video makes it clear he came up with everything by fiddling around with instruments, but it sounds like you're asking only about the big fanfare part that often plays when the Razor Crest takes off for a new journey?  Yea maybe someone else helped with the exact instrumentation to play which part when. Makes no difference to me personally >shrug<

Hmm, for some reason you're playing down a query about orchestration duties/attributes where countless threads and debates within once flourished and even raged here for many many years.

I am referring specially, as mentioned earlier, to this cue:

and I am simply trying to find out whether (or not) Goransson orchestrated this cue himself (as Williams and Howard Shore might). I'm sorry that you are not able to understand the reasoning behind this query. But I think it's quite important. On a straightforward level, it helps me to further determine the [potentially symphonic] scoring chops of this Ludwig guy.

It does to me, very much so.

Williams uses orchestrators, hence most of his credits only saying "Music Composed by", not "Music Composed, Orchestrated, and Conducted by" like Shore, sure his sketches are detailed, but still.

and now I can determine that Goransson is a composer of a certain quality. One to watch, perhaps. But the late John Barry would have been disappointed that he doesn't always conduct his own work.

Yeah, I'm not into that. Call me out of touch or whatever, but I think a composer or musician should be really close to their performance and band mates when he/she directs its conception. Let the engineers look after the recording.

That's  why they choose to be in the booth, so they can get the direct the conception of the audio levels ;)

There are a few scores Rozsa didn't  conduct as well IIRC.

Some of Jurassic Park was conducted by Artie Kane.

Is JNH a great of cinema music? I personally consider him to be tier 3.

Health reasons (and whatever else similar) are justified.

What's the thing they all do now, striping? (recording sections of the orchestra etc. on different days etc.)    The idea of an orchestra conductor seems a hopelessly romantic dream for stuff like that.
