Terrible voice impersonation aside (mute the vid for striking believability), get these guys working on Star Wars and Indy 4 ;)

Near flawless work, and a great demo of what proper (read: scary) deepfakery can look like when it has professional clout behind it.

Disney needs to stop wasting its time with rubbish ILM de-ageing CGI.

That ‘rubbish ILM CGI’ is what allows any of these videos to exist in the first place.

All the deep-fake is doing, is touching up (with mixed results) some of the intricacies of the face that can’t quite be perfectly replicated yet.

The biggest problem right now is the digital artefacting and the lack of a proper inside of the mouth while speaking. I’d wager these factors among many others are why deep-faking is not a part of the ILM pipeline, assuming that it isn’t because I don’t know for sure.

No you don't.

But I'd be inclined to believe these slight technical hurdles would just be more in a long list of problems which were eventually overcome with technical tenacity and finesse. I have never noticed myself looking into a performer's mouth, outside of porn.

I'd still say Deep Fake would provide a much more solid base than those full CGI faces they are doing. Then use your available resources (which should be plenty, if free software and 3 days of work can already get you so far) to fix the typical DF artifacts (adding a CGI mouth interior is obviously much more simple than doing a whole head).

Has any major vfx studio used deep-faking outside of something like that impersonation of the Queen the other day? I can't think of any off the top of my head (though would like to see if there are any), though there have to be reasons why they are so rare.

They get a bit weird when the character turns sideways, and mouth and lips are often very odd in motion.

They are limited in that the studio would need to license hundreds of hours of old interview footage of the young actors, all needing to be sourced (doubting they could just download clips from youtube).

They also produce results which are low resolution with plenty of rendering issues which even show when looking at compressed-as-hell YT videos (and what would they look like in 4K?) and studios think it's worth pumping money into CG characters when soon (hopefully) they really will be able to look photo-real.

And last of all, they very much seem to work best on top of a CG recreation of the same face... which requires the CG face to be good in the first place?

Obviously, I don't really know, I am guessing. I'd assume that people working in the industry obviously have their reasons for doing what they are doing, and I'm sure they'd love to save hundreds of hours of refining and rendering imperfect CG characters using deepfakes if they could.

(Yeah, I think the deepfake Luke is an improvement on the weird dead eyes of the Mando original, obviously)

I would wager a big reason is the lack of control.

Deep learning is a black box, meaning you have no idea what processing is actually happening, you just know the input and the output

Its one thing to use machine learning for generating one aspect of the product, like say the wrinkles on a skin - but when it’s the entire face then you lose a lot of authorship, and you’re almost completely at the mercy of the invisible algorithm

When someone makes a fair and decent comparison between pure deep-fake and ILM CGI then I’ll believe it

What I mean is that dress someone up like the characters and then deepfake the face, you’ll then be able to see the pros and cons of that method - instead of piggybacking off all that VFX work

Maybe, but who is Millie Bobby Brown, and why does she look like the love child of Liv Tyler, and Hilary Swank?

She's a strange thing for sure.

The similarities between Carrie and Millie are quite uncanny, I'd never thought about it before either. Oh well, there's a prepacked Leia replacement ready to go then.

So of course Disney will cast Maisie Williams instead.

MBB looks a little too waxy here to be a convincing deepfake, but in a few years the technology will be perfected and that will be a disaster. When it comes to this stuff, I'm a total Luddite. This shit needs to be straight-up banned. There is so little upside compared to the potential for misuse.

Geez, Louise. That scratching noise you hear is the sound of the barrel being scraped.

Didn't ya just hate those snooty over-achievers at school?

In the HBO spanish series "30 monedas" (30 coins) the have used deepfake technology to rejuvenate the main protagonist priest and the main antagonist, using young footage from the actors. For the main antagonist though, since he had been mainly a stage actor, so there was not much footage of him, they have used a younger actor that resembles him.

I think its convincing although it may look a little 'soft'. But its a first being used in an official production, isnt it?

The looks good, i think there is  english dubbed track available if you are interested.

Christ, even I don't remember the original CG Bridges looking this bad.  I've seen better graphics on the last gen consoles.

Indeed. With all these vastly improved amateur efforts, why don't the producers look to them for this kind of stuff? I just don't get it. The big shot FX companies always seem to deliver worse on the 'face' issue than these guys.

The answer is in your question. The luddite VFX houses are terrified of becoming obsolete, so it's in their best interests to stymie the adoption of this tech.

I'd guess it might have something do with the amount of old footage the VFX companies are allowed to use. No such restrictions on "fan videos". Just a guess, though.

I must say that I found the "reconstruction" of Rachel in Blade Runner 2049 to be utterly convincing
