Popular Post Loert 2,511
I only managed to give this a thorough listen for the first time this evening, here are some of my thoughts: I like the beacon-sounding chord ("beacon motif" from hereon) at 0:43 of Track 1. Harps from 1:18 of Track 7 are fun. The swell starting from 1:17 of Track 10 is very dramatic (probably the best "dark" music of this album) The statement of Poe's theme at 1:46 of Track 11 is surprisingly nice Very pretty twinkly stuff at 0:30 of Track 14, and the final half is lovely as well (mostly thanks to the choir) Track 17 2:08 - beacon motif! I think this is the most impressive "sound" of this album. I imagine it's somehow linked to the swell in Track 10. Track 21 has IMO the best action material in this album (though that's not saying much) Between 2:03 and 3:12 of Track 22 is probably my favourite part from this album. Cool use of the beacon motif at the end! The stuff from 3:36 did give me chills a bit, but the legato sounds a bit off, almost like we're listening to samples (actually that's also true of the strings at 2:03). My favourite new motif is the "beacon motif", it's something that I think only JW could pull off yet also quite unexpected. It reminds me of the synth arpeggios in the first droid fight from TPM. Unfortunately, the presentation of "music" in this FYC is absolutely woeful. Just as something interesting was happening, the music immediately cut to something entirely different - though that's to be expected considering that this is basically segments of the film with the dialogue and SFX cut out. So until I hear the album where the presentation has the composer's stamp on it I can't really make any comments on the "musical quality" of this score. Richard Penna 3,687
Yes, the abrupt changes in direction and starting/stopping are really the only subpar elements of this 'album' for me. I'd imagine that the OST will join some of these cues and move stuff around. Plus I'd assume contain 50% more music or so. Man, what on earth are they waiting until the 20th for? There's a lucrative Christmas market waiting for this! JacksonElmore

Edmilson 7,439
Just listened to the album for a third time. Tbh, the first half does have some good material, but on the whole it seems a little... underwhelming? I dunno, I like the dark tone, but much of it seems like taken from The Cave, Who Are You and the music from the scenes on which Poe and his soldiers rebel against Holdo while Finn, Rose and DJ are sneaking aboard Snoke's ship. I guess Williams were better at writing dark, moody, but still interesting underscore on Revenge of the Sith (Palpatine's Seduction, I Am the Senate, News of the Attack, Moving Things Along, etc). However, on the second half the "album" does really improve. From Battle of the Resistance to A New Home, there's some great, epic and emotional music through the end. Can't wait to see how this works in context! Will
Popular Post The Five Tones 302
It is only fitting that this piece of the final score chapter in the saga would arrive like a... red herring? MacGuffin? The first ending of Adventures of Han? The third ending of The Forest Battle? No matter this is extended samples (it won't feel that way when it complements the OST), or missing satisfying callbacks to existing themes or concert suites: I LOVE THIS. I just about broke down at work on the first listen... I know I will in the theatre. I don't care that it's not the soundtrack presentation never mind the score presentation in the film ("No matter that it takes an eternity, we will have the Remastered Complete and Chronological Episodes 1-9, both JWFan, and then one day, our heirs!") There are sonorities (colours) here that feel so fresh... and yes, the TV spot music I said couldn't be JW... I'm not going to comment on what themes or content should be here as we'll know in days, though if the "Farewell" theme is the suite-worthy material, I'll take it. I'll also take the Emperor's theme with mixed chorus! It feels a little out of place in the ST, but again I don't care. Who knows whether the film presentation of the score will bring closure or articles of impeachment against Binary Sunset, but what I'm hearing now is pleasantly surprising. I'm daring to hope TROS will top all the post-OT scores (yes, my top three are the OT). Where is @Falstaft? I'm imagining him working away furiously to update the theme/leitmotif catalogue, or at least preparing for the proper updates. Will 2,215
To expand on my earlier remarks after listening several more times: I do agree with those who have said that this album is massively underwhelming. Great themes appear once or twice and then disappear, and it's hard to spot any sort of real thematic arc. Most of it sounds quite dark, and sounds absolutely nothing like I would have expected a grand finale film score to sound. There is almost (almost) no sense of finality or closure. That said, there are some really, really terrific moments here which showcase once again how John is an absolute master of his craft. I mentioned some of them earlier, so I won't repeat myself now. But I'll just say that I'm at once very, very pleased with some of what I've heard but also desperately hoping (like Loert & KM) that this FYC is a highly incomplete presentation of the score -- even though part of me is also preparing to be disappointed. *sigh* Bofur01 and _deleted_

Balahkay 627
This is why I’m waiting for the OST to hear the music. Fifty minutes of hacked up music (from an Abrams film no less) isn’t a very desirable listening experience to me. I’d prefer my ears get used to the full OST tracks (hopefully) instead of film edits. I’m willing to wait for OST and not spoil my last JW SW experience with a FYC. After JW departs SW, I will have no interest in the future SW franchise.
