Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 31/03/2020 - incl "The Maestro’s Finale" digital only!

Eventhough we may not get the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy, I hope that one of the special features will be an audio track of the on-the-set production audio for each of the original-trilogy films.  Hearing David Prowse talk in that helmet always cracks me up.

In the end, they're Lucas's movies and he can do what he wants with them and release what he wants.  I've always been curious about the rationale for Empire and Jedi, since he didn't direct those two - and in the case of Jedi, the director had been dead for many years before Lucas fiddled with it - but he owns the thing, so I guess it's his to fiddle with.  I'd call the special edition changes a net positive, even though there are certain things I dislike (mainly the CG creature effects incl. Jabba, the Greedo deal, and Jedi Rocks).

There's also the allegation that the Special Edition effects alterations were made onto the camera negative, making a restoration from the original elements impossible (and leading to just, like, an official Despecialized Edition, I guess).

Fuck that! Also he sold them 7 years ago.

strongly disagree, especially with all the post-97 additions

They reprinted the new shots out onto film and spliced them into their own archived versions. The unaltered masters still exist for those shots somewhere. Despecialised literally just stiches together better footage and much worse quality earlier bits. A proper restoration woul dbe no more than 4k77 or 4k83 - rescan, cleanup, maybe slight DNR against the heavier grain.

The fan restorations of the originals are so good, these days, it’s basically a non-issue. But it would be cool if they could include multiple versions on the same disc through seamless branching, so the viewer can switch back and forth at will.

But you don't own them in UHD 4K resolution though, or with Dolby Atmos and HDR.

I don't have a 4K TV or a 4K Blu-Ray player, so....not a lot of incentive.

The appeal of 4K for me isn't even to watch them in 4K (I don't have the equipment either) but rather the new remasters when they're succeeding older Blu-ray transfers. Obviously, recent 4K transfers released alongside recent standard HD transfers, not much incentive if you don't have the equipment and aren't that hardcore of a videophile. However, Jurassic Park, The Lost World and the Batman collection are recent updates where they went back to formula and totally replaced the dated HDTV transfers from the 2000s, so they're worth checking out.

The Star Wars trilogy are completely different versions than the DVD/Blu-ray transfers, which looked like the exact same source from the early 2000s stepped up to 1080p when it was released in HD. George Lucas said the new 4Ks are the best the movies have ever looked.

So about $US 85 for the standard, nine movie blu-ray box...

Which makes for about $US 9.50 per movie... But it’s all standard blu-ray. If this’d been a 4K box, then maybe, but it’s not, so no.

Well, it’s good to see a 4K box getting a wide release, even though it’s a bit pricey in my opinion, paying $75 per trilogy.

But I chalk that down to my Star Wars fatigue, I’m sure this’ll fly off the shelves.

Pass, I’m content with just have TFA and Rogue One on Blu-ray.

It was George’s right to do what he wanted with his films and as a consumer it’s my right to not watch them.

They’ll probably go back to the time George Lucas said there’d be twelve Star Wars films and use that as their excuse.

Mommy, I want another Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode X – The Spaceballs Awaken
Star Wars: Episode XII – The Last Spaceballs

Star Wars: Episode XIII – The Rise of Spaceballs

December 2021

These 4K version will probably be what’s on Disney+. They still have a chance to fix TPM which looks washed out, erasing a lot of the detail. In some scenes, the human characters look like they have sunburns.

I actually had DVDs for episodes 1-6, then realised I was never going to play them on my surround speakers and just gave them to a thrift store. No regrets.

I did exactly the same about a month ago.

“It’s a mixture of emotions, I have to say because we’ve had such an incredible time it’s just flown by these five years doing these three movies. To realize we’re completing The Saga, we’re not finishing the Skywalkers necessarily they could always, in one way or another, reappear. But for right now it is bringing it to a close.” —Kathleen Kennedy

Um, no thanks...

But I’d take a ”JJ cut” of TLJ, kinda like The Donner Cut of Supes II, where he’d be allowed to recut the movie using unused footage from that movie, as well as from TFA and TROS, to make it sit better between the two movies he directed. Of course he’d also be allowed to cut out whatever he wanted.

If you cut the fat from that film it’s basically just Rey and Luke on Ach-To

Suggestions for a “JJ cut” of TLJ

Simply cutting down the Canto Bight sequence will improve the film, the more left out the better...

And maybe create a different opening where Luke doesn’t throw away his lightsaber.

And delete the scene where Chewie becomes a vegetarian...

...and the “everybody has the force” ending. Bye, bye broom boy!

Edit: Oh, and that stupid Poe-Hux conversation from the beginning of the movie should never have happened the way it did.

And if possible, play down the “your parents were nobody” parts...

Finally, to help bridge TFA and TROS, put in:

A) anything establishing The Knights Of Ren as badasses, and

B) a hint that the emperor is still lurking about, maybe that recording they put in Fortnite could be heard towards the end.

Bonus feature leaks (possibly not complete):

The Bonus Disc will include Conversations: Doug Chiang Looks Back, Discoveries from Inside: Models & Miniatures, and George Lucas on the Digital Revolution (we suspect this will also include a Making of Collection but it’s not listed here).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will include audio commentary with director JJ Abrams on Disc One. The Bonus Disc will include the exact same extras found on the previous Blu-ray release. What we don’t know for sure yet is whether they’ll be the original Blu-ray (reviewed here) or the more deluxe extras found on the Blu-ray 3D package (reviewed here). [Editor’s Note: Sources indicate this will in fact be the bonus disc from the 3D Collector’s Edition, which includes previously retail and digital exclusive extras.]

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will include audio commentary with director Rian Johnson and a MUCH welcome surprise: The Score-Only Version of the Movie that was previously a Digital exclusive. The Bonus Disc will include the exact same package of extras found on the previous Blu-ray and 4K version of the film (reviewed here). [Editor’s Note: Sources indicate this will include the Target-exclusive Meet the Porgs featurette.]

And finally, the official details for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have yet to be revealed.

Here’s a look at the front cover artwork for each of them…[note: RoS still has placeholder art so not included]

Personally I was hoping (foolishly) for isolated scores for all 9 films, and fully post produced and restored deleted scenes in HD :(

Also it seems Empire of Dreams is MIA

Hold on to your old 2001-2006 DVDs if you still want those extra features. I won't buy another Star Wars set until it includes the Episode II "On Location" web series with Ahmed Best.

That's what I plan to do ;)

There's too much mention of "20th Century Fox" and other production trivia that Disney would rather suppress. LFL in the 2000s was too transparent for today's tightly guarded corporate culture.

That would be nice. But it would probably also lower the chances of us ever getting the complete score releases.

I personally don't care much about isolated SW scores. They are so hacked up anyway.

I just thought it strange that they elected to included the MA one for TLJ. It's messing with my OCD.

In any case, I thought post-2005 scores recorded in the US were prohibitively expensive to expand? Iso's seem to be a way around that (though admittedly somewhat flawed by the films editing requurements). I'd have settled for iso's on the ST as we have the OSTs and the FYCs.

It's not the cost. It's whether Disney would count that as a complete score release. They might not make that distinction just like Sony didn't make it with TPM: UE.
