Eventhough we may not get the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy, I hope that one of the special features will be an audio track of the on-the-set production audio for each of the original-trilogy films.  Hearing David Prowse talk in that helmet always cracks me up.

In the end, they're Lucas's movies and he can do what he wants with them and release what he wants.  I've always been curious about the rationale for Empire and Jedi, since he didn't direct those two - and in the case of Jedi, the director had been dead for many years before Lucas fiddled with it - but he owns the thing, so I guess it's his to fiddle with.  I'd call the special edition changes a net positive, even though there are certain things I dislike (mainly the CG creature effects incl. Jabba, the Greedo deal, and Jedi Rocks).

 

There's also the allegation that the Special Edition effects alterations were made onto the camera negative, making a restoration from the original elements impossible (and leading to just, like, an official Despecialized Edition, I guess).

They reprinted the new shots out onto film and spliced them into their own archived versions. The unaltered masters still exist for those shots somewhere. Despecialised literally just stiches together better footage and much worse quality earlier bits. A proper restoration woul dbe no more than 4k77 or 4k83 - rescan, cleanup, maybe slight DNR against the heavier grain.

The fan restorations of the originals are so good, these days, it’s basically a non-issue. But it would be cool if they could include multiple versions on the same disc through seamless branching, so the viewer can switch back and forth at will.

The appeal of 4K for me isn't even to watch them in 4K (I don't have the equipment either) but rather the new remasters when they're succeeding older Blu-ray transfers. Obviously, recent 4K transfers released alongside recent standard HD transfers, not much incentive if you don't have the equipment and aren't that hardcore of a videophile. However, Jurassic Park, The Lost World and the Batman collection are recent updates where they went back to formula and totally replaced the dated HDTV transfers from the 2000s, so they're worth checking out.

 

The Star Wars trilogy are completely different versions than the DVD/Blu-ray transfers, which looked like the exact same source from the early 2000s stepped up to 1080p when it was released in HD. George Lucas said the new 4Ks are the best the movies have ever looked.

Which makes for about $US 9.50 per movie... But it’s all standard blu-ray. If this’d been a 4K box, then maybe, but it’s not, so no.

These 4K version will probably be what’s on Disney+. They still have a chance to fix TPM which looks washed out, erasing a lot of the detail. In some scenes, the human characters look like they have sunburns.

If you cut the fat from that film it’s basically just Rey and Luke on Ach-To

Suggestions for a “JJ cut” of TLJ

 

Simply cutting down the Canto Bight sequence will improve the film, the more left out the better...

 

And maybe create a different opening where Luke doesn’t throw away his lightsaber.

 

And delete the scene where Chewie becomes a vegetarian...

 

...and the “everybody has the force” ending. Bye, bye broom boy!

 

Edit: Oh, and that stupid Poe-Hux conversation from the beginning of the movie should never have happened the way it did.

 

And if possible, play down the “your parents were nobody” parts...

 

Finally, to help bridge TFA and TROS, put in:

A) anything establishing The Knights Of Ren as badasses, and

B) a hint that the emperor is still lurking about, maybe that recording they put in Fortnite could be heard towards the end.

Personally I was hoping (foolishly) for isolated scores for all 9 films, and fully post produced and restored deleted scenes in HD

 

Also it seems Empire of Dreams is MIA

I just thought it strange that they elected to included the MA one for TLJ. It's messing with my OCD.

 

In any case, I thought post-2005 scores recorded in the US were prohibitively expensive to expand? Iso's seem to be a way around that (though admittedly somewhat flawed by the films editing requurements). I'd have settled for iso's on the ST as we have the OSTs and the FYCs.

It's not the cost. It's whether Disney would count that as a complete score release. They might not make that distinction just like Sony didn't make it with TPM: UE.
