Popular Post mrbellamy 6,286
On 12/23/2019 at 3:47 AM, Thor said: Exactly. He might be 87, but he's a sprightly 87-year-old (my own granddad passed at 86, in considerable worse shape the last couple of years of his life). More like 77 in 'physical age' if judging by his appearances lately. So I'm optimistic and hoping for another whole decade of new Williams music in some form or another. He'll be like Mozart, composing on his death bed and relating his notes to some Salieri (William Ross?). Let's hope he'll be like Portuguese film director Manuel de Oliveira, who directed films untill the very end, at age 106(!). It was hard to even count on this decade so I’m not daring to look that far ahead. But I am cautiously optimistic that we’ll get to see him as a 90 year old working composer. That’d be wonderful. This Star Wars trilogy has been a great thing to have. I’m really left feeling after all this like no stone was unturned and I have a real sense of what he can, can’t, will, and won’t do compared to his various other “eras,” not just Star Wars but all these big adventure scores that I’ve loved all my life. And I’m satisfied that even if Indiana Jones rolls around as a bonus, this closes the book on something major. There’s just no reason he would ever commit to three films of this size again and I’m happy not to be left wondering “what could have been” in this late stage of his career. I feel like he has given all I could ask him to give in the most entertaining category of his considerable talents. So as a fan of both the composer and the man, I genuinely feel more than ever that I just want him to do whatever he wants. I have no expectations but it is sad that we have nothing concrete to look forward to for the first time in years. I guess all I really hope is that he never makes me wait more than a year or two for something new. crumbs 14,315
I wonder if, in the years to come, he might continue revisiting some of his concert suites and update them? The updated HS&TP was such a breath of fresh air. Imagine if some other themes got the same treatment? For example, a more resolved arrangement of Rey's Theme to reflect the conclusion of her story? crlbrg

crumbs 14,315
It's an interesting question. I once thought he might write a suite of new themes for, say, a trilogy of new films just to establish the characters. But now I'm more inclined to think he'd just wipe his hands of it, for fear of other composers (cough) butchering his themes.

mrbellamy 6,286
Ideally he’d be doing all kinds of interesting movies but he’s either not taking those or not being asked. The thing about the sequels is it’s usually an opportunity for a lot of music in a lot of moods and styles in one go. So I like em as a bit of a Johnny smorgasbord, especially lacking anything else. If they’re a bit rote and redundant at times, that’s ok.

p0llux 398
If he's done with feature length films, that's okay. My wish is for him to do smaller projects like Kobe Bryant's "Dear Basketball". I don’t mind if he skips his percussion concerto for T h e B i g V i o l i n C o n c e r t o The first one must mean so much to him and now he’s at least 40 years older and he’s free from Star Wars! Biodome 714
I would love it if he turned to new concert works. Would be kinda cool if he wrote something mind-boggling and undecipherable on his deathbed (which is hopefully far, far in the future), analogous to what Beethoven did with his Große Fuge, and then, in a century or so, some sort of Stravinsky-like person would declare that that work was very much ahead of its time, and is an ageless masterpiece.
