Star Wars scores best to 9th best

By the time we get complete releases a good chunk of posters active over the last couple of months might be gone or replaced by others, so I would like to make this a "carpe diem" poll, and create a field for discussion that shows our current thinking.

 

A lot can change after we get more of missing music, especially from TROS, but then these results will look even more interesting for us from the future.

I decided to make it a poll nonet to make counting easier. I will add statistics in the main post after 30 people vote.

I'm fairly surprised by how low AOTC is. The Love theme is pretty, but the action music is unlike any of the action music in the other films. "Zam the Assassin", "On the Conveyor Belt" and "Entrance of the Monsters" are all just great.

Somewhere in the universe, there is an alternate reality where Attack of the Clones is the only Star Wars score/movie in existence and the JWFan forum in that world worships it.

I never managed to really care for Across the Stars and all I remember of it in complete form is that it's a total bore. I do really like the OST, though.

Best to worst:

 

TESB - Utter perfection

ROTJ - Great colorfulness and the great number of highlights offset any structural messiness

SW - The original, though the above two add more to its thematic repertoire. Weirdly "alien" sound in a good way

TPM - See ROTJ. Also great new themes.

TFA - Great new themes and strong musical architecture. Lack of big highlights to an extent though.

ROTS - The best highlights of either prequel/sequel trilogies, great underscore, is very emotional, also has rather messy musical architecture

TROS - Have to let it sink in more to decide, but this position looks pretty right

AOTC - Great love theme, but mostly auto-pilot Williams

TLJ - Auto-pilot Williams. In a pinch more enjoyable than AOTC, but the new themes are less interesting.

It'd be curious to see how people rank the films alongside the scores. Because I think to some degree the film biases you one way or another, but also more importantly in my mind the quality of a score for me is in large part determined by how it works with the film itself.

That's hard. Only thing clear to me is that ESB is at the top of my list and AOTC is at the bottom. So maybe something like:

- TROS (maybe I'm lured by the novelty? we'll see in a few years)

- TPM (great but this kind of writing is less my cup of tea these days)

- TFA / TLJ (TFA gives us Rey's Theme, March of the Resistance and Jedi Steps, but has too much boring underscore. TLJ is a better listening experience overall, and has the best action music of the sequel trilogy).

ESB and ANH consistently duke it out for first in my book. "Gut reaction" picks between those will vary depending on my mood.

 

At the other end, TLJ is a definitive low point for me. There's some very good stuff in there, but the literal interpretation of the temp track and the stretches of tepid underscore make for a stark contrast with the other eight scores.

 

I can't vote yet because I haven't listened to TROS outside of the film yet. But even once I've listened to that album, voting will be nearly impossible. I reeeeaaaaally like my Star Wars scores.
