Popular Post Jay 37,287
Quote 'Star Wars' Composer John Williams to Conduct the Cleveland Orchestra in April John Williams, the illustrious composer behind the themes from Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and Jaws, is coming to Severance Hall this spring, the Cleveland Orchestra just announced. Scheduled for Sunday, April 26, the orchestra will be conducted by Williams, as they were last in 2018. The special program is not yet solidified, but is set to include plenty of Williams' film scores. While Williams has made quite a few appearances with the orchestra at Blossom Music Center, this is only his second performance at Severance Hall. Tickets for the 3 p.m. show go on sale to members on Friday, Jan. 10, and to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 14. VIP Experience tickets are $1,250. https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2020/01/06/star-wars-composer-john-williams-to-conduct-the-cleveland-orchestra-in-april lairdo, Timo Martikainen, Ricard and 2 others 4
Marian Schedenig 8,173
I was half expecting Williams to more or less retire from conducting concerts after Vienna. Good to see that doesn't seem to be his plan. Will

Marian Schedenig 8,173
As host again, right? Which isn't quite the same as an official conducting commitment, even if he ends up conducting (part) of the concert again. Will
Jay 37,287
You think he's going to conduct more pieces in Cleveland than he will at Tanglewood?
Taikomochi 1,136
He conducted the entire show last time he was in Cleveland, every piece. Doesn’t he usually not do that?
Jay 37,287
Historically he's always conducted every piece, but post-pacemaker he sometimes only does the second half, like the last couple times I saw him at Symphony Hall in Boston Will

I haven't even thought about that. Although I'd say that if he's officially announced as the conductor, I'd assume he's at least doing half the concert, which would be more than in Tanglewood. And it very much looks like he's doing the full thing in Vienna, twice, so perhaps he's feeling up to it again for Cleveland as well. Anyway, my main point was that if he's officially listed as the conductor, that's more of a commitment than being host for Film Night. crumbs 14,301
It hadn't really occurred to me but would orchestras themselves be considered risky 'mass gatherings', given the proximity of all musicians? Something I haven't really thought about but definitely a concern for someone of Williams' age.

Taikomochi 1,136
I think it’s going to be cancelled, and that breaks my heart because this was probably my last chance to see Williams. But it’s for the best.
Thor 7,465
I would be mightily surprised if it WASN'T cancelled. This Corona thing is suppposed to last for months, if not a year, so all cultural events throughout the year are in danger. And most certainly with an 87-year-old man at the helm, even though he's healthier than most.
crumbs 14,301
I wouldn't want Williams going out in public right now. He should spend the next few months self isolating, given his age and potential health implications of catching this thing. Not worth the risk. He has a lovely house and wife, a great study and piano and oodles of time to write new music. Perhaps there will be a "Corona concerto" down the road. Popular Post Oozer 25
It's been officially canceled, though the orchestra is urging people to hold on to their tickets as they're trying to reschedule. Quote If you are a ticket holder for John Williams Conducts, scheduled for April 26, please hold on to your tickets as we work to reschedule this concert.
