Post-concert VIP receptions - is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

I see that for some of Mr. Williams performance, a post-concert VIP reception tickets were sold for a pretty premium price of $500-1000+ per ticket (for Cleveland show they are like $1250 + donation for the orchestra). I wonder if any of you have attended such receptions lately and can tell how do they look like? I have read some stories from Baltimore and Nashivlle that the post-show reception was limited to a short speech after which Mr. Williams has been escorted out from the room - of course that would be a huge disappointment. So I wonder if any more of you can share your VIP experiences? Is it possible to say hello to him, get an autograph or a photo with?

The closest I ever got to JW (except in the auditorium, of course) was backstage, at The Barbican, July 4, 1998. Fans stood outside a room (presumably, some sort of "meet 'n' greet" place) while an employee took our stuff to be autographed, disappeared for about fifteen minutes, before returning with it all.

Hmm. $1250 to stand in line for the chance to be seen next to some octogenarian? Life's far too fucking short.

I would guess that he would make a short speech and leave at best, with you being crowded in with a bunch of people pushing each other. So unless you have a ton of money to blow, then I think you will be disappointed sadly. I hate to say it, but it's near impossible to get at him unless you have a sighting when he's in the audience, but even so there were people escorting him in and out.

I just remember, now maybe.... 20 years ago, he would come out of a side door into the main entrance of Symphony Hall in Boston and do a nice little meet and greet with literally whoever waited there, as long as you were polite. And then that stopped eventually and people waited outside for him to go to his car, but then there were a lot of people being dicks, with one woman actually trying to get into his fucking car I remember, and then a year later I was waiting outside pre-concert and saw him almost get into an accident (being driven) and the driver got out and yelled to some cops that a car (which had sped away) had been following them from the hotel.

It's really a pity these crazy people ruined it, but I can understand why he doesn't meet anyone anymore.....

I don’t think there is any way to know for certain. San Diego 2007 he just popped into a room before the concert (there was nothing after), said a few words, and left (maybe 50-75 people in the room). Houston 2013 he went to a large room after the concert and individually spoke to people who came up to him. The Houston concert was with Yo-Yo Ma who was also at the reception (maybe 100-200 people); there was a large contingent from the Chinese community and I think they were at least as interested in speaking to him as Mr. Williams.

I too appreciate the old days when you could just see/meet him before/after a concert...
