So what, most of us have never seen that film.

Only the very similar, but different film called A New Hope.

Stefancos- :)

It's a good thing we've never heard this crack before, Stefancos, otherwise this joke would have gotten VERY old.

Happy birthday, Star Wars! You're still the best!

HPFan, the title card "Episode IV: A New Hope" was added to the film for the 2 week re-release that started on April 10, 1981. The original title of the film was just Star Wars, the way it should be.

I wonder what George has in store for us in four years from now when it's the 30th birthday celebration of Star Wars. Perhaps he will announce that he will do the last three chapters after all, who knows.

It's the truth, old or otherwise.

If you cannot accept that truth, then that is your problem.

I can accept that truth. It's the 3,153th time I've heard that joke I have trouble accepting.

Meh. Lucas'll sooner remake the original films than do episodes VII - IX.

Well A New Hope is actually pretty much the same film.

A New Hope "Special Edition" however .......

Can anyone remember a time when Han Solo had the balls to shoot a Rhodian unprovoked?? :?

May 25, 1977, a Wednesday afternoon, my little sister and I walked to the mall which was 5 minutes away. My mother was also the manager of the Halmark store, and we went to have lunch. We did not expect to see a new movie opening that day. Star Wars did not get alot of great publicity. But it would steamroll everything in its way, including Jaws.

From the opening credits, my sister and I knew we were seeing something different, something important. Something that was going to change movies forever. More importantly we saw something that was just plain damn fun. On a WOW factor scale of 1 to 10, it was easily and 11.

OH the special effects were for the first time ever special. They was a reality to them like never before. Something else that was even better than the effects were the assortment of characters that people liked and actually cared about. Most boys wanted to be Han or Luke, though some wanted to be Vader or C3P0, every girl wanted to be Princess Leia. John Williams ruled the day. His music was so cool.

It was a wonderful time to be a teenager. Its why I have a passion for this film. A passion I reserve for only a few select films.

Joe.

That's right, Joe. Just a select few. I had to wait two long years (back then it felt longer) for my next classic: Alien. I left the theater thinking, boy, what the HELL was that! Totally blew me away. And it scored high in other fields different then those of Star Wars.

It was no Star Wars clone, which, with all the Star Wars hype, was an achievement.

These days I would gladly wait for two years to experience the same kind of emotional thrills.

I wish every few years I did feel that experience but its been since JP that I have had one quite like it.

I envy you Joe!

That must have truly been an experience to remember like no other!

Hope I live to see the opening of a movie that was as big of an event as SW was.

Haven't you been in the theater on December 19, 2001?

HP won't change the coarse of cinema history.

Except perhaps Box Office history. But even that is not going to happen. Star Wars would still be number one if ticket prices weren't quadrupled.

Have a nice day.

It doesn't matter. LOTR? Pick your choice. Any film around December 19, 2001. Same story.

Hey, I like LotR. And for what it's worth, every aspect of it is better then any Prequel Episode (and RotJ of course). But what is it gonna change?

What is so new about it that it will influence a whole bunch of other movies/directors in the years to come? Hell, LotR IS Star Wars. Peter Jackson should do Episode III and a new hope will arise.

William, Star Wars wasn't a big event when it opened, but it became one. Hits back then didn't shoot their wad in one massive opening. My goodness Matrix Reloaded was the #1 film for one week. ONE week, before it gets knocked off. Even 6 years ago Titanic was #1 for something like 26 weeks. Today big event films are all hype with no substance. Its like anticipating eating a Twinkie, all fluff, and no nutrition. A little sugar rush and its over.

Chris speaks of Dec. 19, 2001, but a month earlier, Nov. 16, 2001, and little wizard named Harry had a bigger opening.

Today there are 70 screens within 20 min. of my house, back in 77 there were 18. Its a whole different experience

Sorry but that film did not cause ANYWHERE NEAR the stir the original SW did.

Nor is it ANYWHERE NEAR as good as the ORIGINAL SW IMO. :|
