I've seen three of the nine Picture nominees already.

The Irishman

Marriage Story

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Of those three, if I picked 'em, I'd give it to Marriage Story without question.  I'll work on seeing the ones that interest me of the other six.

Still haven’t seen Ford v Ferrari or Little Women. Was gonna see the latter anyway, might as well check out the former. Out of the other categories, Pain & Glory is the only one left I have been wanting to see ASAP.

Original Screenplay is a pretty solid lineup. Parasite should get it. I predict QT.

I've yet to see Jojo Rabbit and Little Women from the Best Picture noms. It's a solid list. Nice to see Bong Joon-Ho getting a Best Director nod. Interesting to see no real A24 attention this year.

Little Woman and Le Mans 66 are two best picture noms I do want to see at some point .

1917 is the only one I have seen but it’s fantastic.

I’m glad that the cookie cutter Shute Avengers has been largely ignored.

Midsommar, The Farewell, The Lighthouse, and Uncut Gems seemed to be shoe-ins for some Oscar noms, surprising none did.

Yeah, was at least expecting an acting nomination for Sandler. Shame.

The Lighthouse got cinematography

With so much of the old guard putting out big budget features this year, it looks like none of the little guys really had a chance at making any of the lists. That's Hollywood for ya.

2019 does look like it's been a pretty strong year for film, in retrospect.

Taron Egerton was also robbed. He was far better than Rami Malek in a similar role. He actually sang as well!

Agreed. Much better film too.

Good to see Johnny Baby get the nomination.  Given recent years' results, I have my doubts that the academy will give it to him, unless they give him some love for the whole legacy/job well done component of finishing Star Wars.

lol @ the major awards noms for Joker

It's a real coup for Netflix this year.  Maybe a wake-up call to the major studios that if they want to consider the awards bump as part of their financial strategy, they should take more time and care to finance films for adults.

Then again, Joker!

In the animated category, I was surprised to see that Frozen 2 wasn't nominated, which I liked at least more than Toy Story 4.

I'm surprised people think Endgame is a great score - I loved the movie, and the score had good moments, but I wasn't super impressed.

I don't remember it at all really. Aside from the theme popping up every now and then.

The nominations list is a relatively strong one this year.

I'm glad Florence Pugh was nominated for Little Women, but she REALLY should have been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Midsommar.

Willem Dafoe should have been nominated for best supporting actor for his role in The Lighthouse.

Given how the awards season has been playing out, I wouldn't be surprised if Tarantino bagged it this year. Not that I think he deserves it.

I seem to remember being the only person on JWFan who loved (or even especially liked) OUATIH, but I would be perfectly happy with Tarantino winning Director.  The movie wouldn't be my personal pick for Best Picture, but I wouldn't be unhappy with it winning that either.

You’re not.

It’s his best since Basterds, I’d be pretty happy if he won Pic, Director, Screenplay.

Anyone but Phillips would be a solid director choice.

Well, I'm the weirdo who preferred Django to Basterds, but what I loved about OUATIH is how it seemed to combine style elements from across his career into one thing.  It's a self-indulgent hodgepodge, but one I was just so happy to let myself be immersed in.  The pop-culture nostalgic ADD magpie style might not be everyone's cuppa tea, but I really dug it.

I really like all of QT’s movies, fully love half of em including this one.

Death Proof is my least fave, pretty common opinion. There’s a lot of deliberate bad taste in his stuff and that one doesn’t have as much to balance it out the other way, the mix of high and low brow is when he’s the most fun. But the car chase is a riot.

He hasn't been nominated since Tree of Life.  He spent the last decade puncturing his own mystique and I feel like Academy types lost interest in him.

Shame though. Because A Hidden Life is quite good, and a return to form for him.

I enjoy Tarantino the same way I enjoy Waffle House food.

I think of him more like Outback. You kinda want steak but you don’t wanna dress up for it.

I love it too. It's my favourite of the Best Picture nominees (I haven't seen Jojo Rabbit or 1917).

I was a big fan of it as well. I raved about it in my review. I think it's Tarantino's best since Basterds, and my first or second favorite of the Best Picture nominees.

Adam Driver is this year's best actor, whether he wins the award or not. It's high time he got the recognition he deserves as Marriage Story is a career performance from him.

Yea, but Driver's career is just getting started really. He's got his whole life ahead of him to deliver "career performances".

It's high time Phoenix got his overdue Oscar.

It's not about past snubs or future possibilities. Driver deserves it for this year and that's all there is to it.

Well, sure. But these awards rarely work like that. And you make it sound like Driver has been snubbed and neglected all season. He has had a very good year, both with the masses and the critics.

For the record, I thought Driver was fantastic in Marriage Story. But Phoenix was also brilliant, the Joker's problems withstanding.

I saw an interview with Tom Hanks ahead of his Globes lifetime achievement award where he referred to the time between the Golden Globes and the Oscars as "Hollywood's High Holy Month" which made me giggle.

Amazingly, his Supporting Actor nom today is his first nomination since Cast Away!  I personally would have nominated him for Road to Perdition, Catch Me If You Can, The Ladykillers, Captain Phillips, and Bridge of Spies in that time period, but that's just me, a huge fan of Tom Hanks.

He probably suffers from the fact that he’s always good and keeps a ridiculously high bar.

But let's not forget that our beloved Saoirse just got her 4th nomination at age 25!
