JWFan EXCLUSIVE: The Rise of Skywalker Partial Cue List Revealed

I suspect, if Anthem of Evil is Psalm of the Sith, then it was initially tracked to resemble something like this:

Of course, the final cut plasters Vader's Castle over the Anthem of Evil theme, then fragments of Final Saber Duel over the rest (plus other incidental evil music that we can't place, because it isn't in the spreadsheet either).

It's conceivable the entire Star Destroyer reveal originally belonged at the end of the film, and this is what Williams scored to accompany it.

Beautiful job. If Psalm of the Sith was intended for the final cut of the film, then I believe it went in this scene. The Anthem of Evil theme lacks an "introduction" in the film, so to speak, and this would be the perfect time to introduce that theme.

This worked much better for me than reprising the Imperial March in this scene. The Anthem of Evil with epic visuals to accompany it's introduction would've made it have a far more prominent role in the film. Good work!

That was awesome, much better than the final cut

"Salm of the Psith"? I think you need to re-edit that video title.

Otherwise, that was really awesome; I would not be surprised if that part of Anthem of Evil was composed and recorded for the reveal of the Sith Fleet. Maybe the entire piece, Anthem of Evil, was originally meant to score Kylo Ren's encounter with Palpatine, perhaps an alternate. We won't know until a definitive release of the Maestro's score comes out (along with the other eight).

This was a score restore I had to try but the results have broken my heart. :(

I accomplished this with a single 8 second trim of JW's cue. How they felt obliged to dump the entire second half of Williams' intentions and replace it with tracked music from TFA is anyone's guess. Surely the film's most offensive instance of tracking, and certainly the most unnecessary.

Holy shit, that was great!  Much better than what they did in the final cut!

"Pshalm of the Phsith". You made it worse!!!

All seriousness, though, it should be Psalm of the Sith.

That is very cool! I always wanted to see how that was originally scored. Keep these coming, if possible. By the way, why not have the entire scene with the entire cue? Same with Psalm of the Sith / Anthem of Evil? Just curious.

I'm a bit wary of copyright takedowns (which deleted my last batch of videos) but I'll have a special new video later today for the entire opening sequence which should whet your appetite if you like long videos.

Excellent job, Crumbs. Really fun watching these. Having the score implemented in these ways would have really gone a long ways to dispelling some of the views from viewers that thought this film provided little to no new memorable musical material.

Don't worry about precise filling of the music with film scenes. Wouldn't it be possible to fill the gaps with a simple black screen? This would really bring the point home as to how much has been changed / how much footage remains unreleased.

In theory this is the ideal but I can't stress how hard it is with JJ's films. The music is looped in some places and trimmed in others. It's very difficult to sync Williams' intentions to picture because two shots will line up perfectly then the third will be out by half a second.

I will put up a video like you described for the opening sequence because that clearly scored a much longer cut.

These are really fun, keep em coming. Just as a technical question, what are you using to edit, and how are you attempting to isolate the voices (anything beyond just isolating the center channel)? Some parts are pretty decent.

Adobe Premiere Pro for the edit, with the 5.1 audio mix removed in places and replaced with just the centre (vocal) channel from the mix (though the music track bleeds into this channel and can't be removed, it's still cleaner than leaving in the entire 5.1 mix).

Gotcha. That's my go to method as well for things like this but I'm always on the lookout for a new solution. Guess the music bleed is just better in some spots than others.

Are there any other clips you're planning on re-scoring? I imagine The Speeder Chase is a given.

Believe me, still trying on that one.

The first 40 and last 90 seconds fit like a glove but the rest is a total headscratcher. There's at least 30-40 seconds of missing footage, so this must have been a very, very early cue in the scoring process.

@Jay, I'm doing a deep dive on the final film compared to this spreadsheet and discovering some interesting things (one of the first being that The Emperor Lives appears to be an alternate to Rey's Mission).

I divided every reel into separate timelines and matched the timings to the spreadsheet. Almost all cues lined up, some were a few seconds out (likely due to minor trims in various scenes) while others had some interesting differences (obvious ones being the total omission of 8M07 Big Ship Blows Up and 2M32 Quicksand).

I pieced together all the fragments of Approaching the Nursery to see if I could make sense of Prologue.

For starters, I assembled the cue list and sorted by cue title, just to see how much repetition existed across the film. Lighter blue represents an appearance in early reels, darker blue represents appearances in latter reels (out of 8):

The other major discovery is that reels 3-8 of the final cut are reasonably consistent with this spreadsheet and answer some questions about the contents of many cues, while reels 1 & 2 clearly underwent heavy restructuring in the final month. A scene (and cue) involving Kylo Ren's helmet was completely omitted in reel 2.

What do you mean?  2M13 Fixing The Helmet plays for the same about 1:15 length in the final cut just like it does in the Nov 11 cut.  It's the scene where the Knights of Ren fix his helmet, then he goes to talk to the other head honchos on the ship in the board room wearing it.  It plays from 19:26-20:41 in the final cut.

2M20 The Forge is missing from the final cut, not 2M02 Fixing the Helmet (although this cue appears to be butchered in the final cut compared to the November cut, considering the lack of notation about the Emperor's Theme, the pitch-adjusted tracked music from TFA and the different length of Kylo's theme).

The 20 second usage of Kylo's Theme, the title of the cue, also the early leaks that describe a more involved sequence on Mustafar with the Knights of Ren and ape creature who reforges his mask.

It also seems to indicate he originally helped them activate the Wayfinder (all of this was scrapped and restructured in the final cut).

It would make sense if Kylo AND the Knights of Ren went on this whole quest to get the Wayfinder, use it, and the helmet just got reforged in the process. As it is, the helmet scene is kind of pointless to the overall story, right?

Link to comment

The helmet forging sequence seems to take place on Mustafar, based on that leak (piles of ash outside the entrance). It also mentioned the ape-creature enabling some device to help Kylo (the Wayfinder?) so maybe this sequence originally took place between the Mustafar raid and the first meeting with the Emperor?

What's it doing in the Nov 11 cut in between the rebels discussing the Emperor's message & the We Go Together scene where they take off?  Tracked into some different Kylo scene that at the time broke up the Ajan Kloss scenes I guess?

Link to comment

Yeah, could just be a different scene that got cut out. Nothing else at that point in the film matches the 0:20 of Kylo's theme. There was a lot more intercutting between Ajan Kloss and the other storylines in the Nov 11 cut, whereas the final cut glued all those Ajan Kloss scenes together.

If it took place on Mustafar though, it couldnt really be moved around.

The other helmet fixing scene, the one we have in the final film, did move, since it was written as 2m2 but plays in the final cut between 2m6 and 2m7

I really tried paying attention to what goes on in that final battle on rewatch.

Good guys arrive

We gotta take out the ground tower, they can't navigate then

They're going for the ground tower, shut off the ground tower

Ground tower shut off just when good guy fighters get to it

Now they're using a tower on an SD

Gotta use a lander and land on the SD and take it out from the surface (why don't they just shoot it like they were going to shoot the ground tower, I have no idea by now)

Finn goes with the lander

Landet lands on the opposite side to make it harder

They ride out on horses for two trailer shots because they landed on the wrong end, literally no other reason but to do a trailer shot with useless horses

Whew, first stretch over, a lot happened, how long was that? 2 MINUTES, ARE YOU INSANE? You have virtually zero time to process anything, nothing has any weight whatsoever when strategies fly by and change and characters teleport places in 3 shots.

Then we cut back a few times to the ground team shooting troopers, grenading something for some reason, then Lando arrives and we have about 5 shots of visual mess with random ships.

Then Palps lightnings them, everyone falls, but Palps stops because he's stupid so I guess they're not falling anymore?

Then at a random point Finn rigs some gun and shoots the tower...again, why didn't they fly in and shoot it with a fighter, the landers could land just fine.

Oh and at some point the fighters just start shooting the dick guns because they can just be shot with fighters and explode. But not the tower.

It's a spectacular mess.
