Oh man, that’d be so great to hear one day. TLJ is great but the ending scene and credits is just kind of unfocused compared to the brilliant Farewell and the Trip/Jedi Steps and Finale from TFA.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot all the cool variations on the Exile Theme! My mistake.

Interesting developments that never made it into the final score :(

There are variations of the exile theme? I would so love to hear them. It is such an underused motif in the final score.

Cool. Any chance of listing all of the cues in chronological order? Just as a reference.

Sure! Though, unfortunately the GEMA database only has codes that show the initial appearance of each cue. In most films that wouldn’t make much difference, but some of these cues are tracked as many as 3-4 times, sometimes only for a few seconds. I’ve also denoted a few missing cues with asterisks that appear to be missing because of an issue with reused titles, and also none of the numerous tracked cues from other episodes are listed here.

Thanks, but when I said chronological order, I meant as composed and conducted, not the sequence of music in the finished film that also included tracked music. Is it possible to list all of the cues in chronological order as composed and conducted, including unused music? Just curious.

It's impossible to know the order; The sheet music hasn't leaked yet

This entire thread is about people trying to piece together that based on what (little) we know or can figure out

Well, there’s still tons we don’t know yet. And as is the case with TFA, even with that information, it’s impossible to establish the “one, true order” of cues, because it was very much a moving target.

However, with that disclaimer, here’s my best guess at fitting together all the know cues as intended, using the ordering from the original spotting from March 2019. Some of these are certain (like 1M20 Rey Training being a revision of music for the same basic scene as 1M4 Through the Jungle and 1M5 Rey Trains), but plenty are just my best guess based on the limited information available. It’s a bit of a fool’s errand, but I love this score enough to attempt it!

I’ll group by scene since the order of many scenes changed over the months of post-production:

Is this table still up to date?

(To be honest, the more I deal with it, the less I understand it! Is it just me? In particular, I don't understand the opening sequence, i.e. the first 10 minutes or so, at all. Its the biggest mess I ever saw. Has a film been cut like this before? after all, Williams composed well over 4 hours of music, that's practically two films. Will we ever have clearity in this topic???)

It's accurate to whatever the film looked like on November 11, 2019.

It's not accurate to the final cut, which continued to edit, replace and revise the score after this document was prepared.

In short, yeah, it's a total mess. Easily the most butchered John Williams score of all time.

That's up to Disney Records, Lucasfilm, John Williams and Mike Matessino (maybe even JJ Abrams, depending on what level of ownership his production company has over the film/the score).

But in general I think that Abrams is responsible for the fact that he always changed the content of the entire film on the one hand and had no clear plan on the other, as he already admitted. There's that one scene in one of the documentaries where John Williams said that J.J. Abrams always wanted new music and then they always apologized to each other that John didn't write the right music (why is he apologizing for that, it's Abrams fault that the music didn't fit anymore) and Abrams for asking for new music. So I think it's primarily J.J Abrams's fault.

Matessino for the expanded album sometimes?

Maybe a new album will bring clearity to this, who knows. But I think for every outsider it is impossible to understand everything. Many decisions were made practically immediately on the spot and that was never communicated to the outside. I wonder if Matessino can see through that. Hopefully there are still records somewhere of all the decisions. If not, the memories will be lost over the years anyway. Maybe there will be a documentary about the circumstances, where many things will come to light. Like Hearts of Darkness about the circumstances of Apocalypse Now.😂😂😂

Was Michael Matessino involved? I think it was Shawn Murphy.

Mike had no involvement in the film, no. But he's the only album producer who can assemble a release that makes sense of everything recorded, and present it in a musically cohesive way.

Shawn Murphy was only the score recordist. Ramiro Belgardt and his team of assistants edited the music to picture, but they were only following instructions from higher ups.

Williams is too polite to have a confrontation on such matters (at least publicly).

In the same way you wouldn't criticize your boss when they screw up and create hours of work for you, Williams is showing self-deprecating humbleness by insisting the issues were his fault.

I'm sure it's a very different story behind closed doors.

Yes, there's little doubt about who's at fault for the entire debacle. One need only watch the film to see that.

btw; Is Matessino the only one, who can release all these new albums? Did he get Williams approval for this or how is it going?

So I know that he's close to Williams and that he's also going to the Berlin concert with Williams, that's what he told me in his e-mails (he's trying to arrange an autograph or photo for me. So kind.)

He's the guy who produces every catalog release of older Williams scores. Some were done by other producers in the past, but Tom Sawyer was the last one of those

Nowadays he's the only album producer Williams wants working on remasters/expansions of his catalog.

When it comes to Star Wars though, nobody knows if anything is happening (insofar as expanded releases). Disney/Lucasfilm own the rights to all 9 scores outright, so only they can instigate expanded releases and they would only come out on their own record label (Walt Disney Records). Usually these things are instigated by the boutique labels (La-La Land Records, Intrada, etc) who acquire a licence, get the approval from Williams to proceed, then hire Mike to produce it.

Because Disney won't licence Star Wars out to any of these labels, we just have to wait for them to instigate such a project. All we've heard for 3-4 years is that "everybody wants to do it, and everyone knows it needs to happen," with no indication anything is being worked on.

And why doesn't anyone else do it too? Surely there are enough scores that should be re-released?

Because Mike is a damn good producer. Probably the best in the business :)

John is very particular about how his music is handled and presented, and he also likes to surround himself with the best people in the industry, be it musicians or technicians.

Mike's been working through his catalog for about 10 years now, so clearly JW trusts the way Mike presents his music.

Mike's first work on Williams catalog was 24 years ago actually. He chose the programs and wrote the liner notes for the 1997 2CD Star Wars sets

There's a list of every album he's worked on here, though it ends at 2017 for now

Well he has a good launching pad when Disney finally pick up the phone and hire him for new expansions ;)

I don't blame Williams for pulling the plug on Star Wars when his music is going to be treated like that.

Fingers crossed we don't get a repeat of TROS with Indy 5. It sounds like they won't record until next April, so no staggered sessions this time around.

Did Williams compose the music like this?

Interesting. what's up with track 15 and the material from ROTS and TLJ?? That's not in the final movie, is it?

Do you think they really showed Vader's Castle on Mustafar using the Imperial March that is later used in the scene with Palp?

I can’t imagine much of this was planned, but what’s so puzzling is the changes go far beyond even what was necessary to match an edit that kept changing enormously up to the last minute. For instance, the music of the Speeder Chase seems to have been largely intact in the November 11th cut, with similar timings, but was almost entirely tracked over before release.

I’ve attempted to piece together what’s actually heard in the final cut, which is—believe it or not—even more convoluted than the November 11th version, with considerably more tracking and micro-editing of cues. The GEMA database reveals the order each cue initially appears in the film, but there’s so much tracking even that information isn’t as helpful as it might seem.

The GEMA database just has cue titles and work codes that seem to match the order each cue is first used in the film (though many, many cues appear more than once). It doesn’t have the cues that are tracked from other Star Wars films as well as some that happen to re-use cue titles previously used by Williams (such as ‘Return to Tatooine’). It also has no indication of timings.

Between GEMA and the November 11th spreadsheet, it’s possible to work out a rough idea of what’s heard in the film, but there’s some educated guesses required, plus a few bits that are simply impossible to know without more information.

Wow, what a list. I didn't even know there was tracking from AOTC.

Thanks!

I’m not 100% sure about the AOTC tracking, but it’s certainly the same material, and to my ears it sounds like the same recording. Unfortunately, like a lot of music in this film, it’s mixed very quietly.

Anyone else care to chime in on whether or not they think it’s the same recording?

This observation is true. It is the mystery theme.

It’s not the exact same material, it’s JW rewriting the temp (which definitely is AOTC) but altering it a bit. The lines composed on top of the celli arpeggios are very different from the original recording.

I just wonder if John Williams remembers such "insignificant" themes, as there are frequent statements like that from him?!

He recently said that he can't remember from which Star Wars movie Across The Stars comes.

In an interview with Anne-Sophie Mutter he even said once that he completely forgot it until Anne-Sophie asked him about it. So I guess, he isn't good in remembering these things.

Is he then reminded by anyone involved in the recording process or by the directors ?

(Well, I guess J.J.Abrams is not that educated in this area.)

But maybe he just looks in his notes and closes his eyes, points his finger to some page from a 20 years old movie score and uses a theme from there to confuse music enthusiasts....

As MikeH said, it was just a case of temp tracking (the director and/or editors tracking music from other films to the scene and asking the composer to get as close to it as possible) so it wouldn't have really been his decision.

Yes, there's little doubt about who's at fault for the entire debacle. One need only watch the film to see that.

I'd say it's only partially Abrams' fault, because frankly we don't know what may or may not have been mandated by producers or the studio. If there was anything like that, then it wouldn't necessarily be Abrams at fault. I'm far more inclined to blame Disney for some things, but we don't really know for sure. I don't necessarily believe the rumors about what supposedly happened, but plenty of films are plagued with similar issues that are result of studio meddling and not the director. Could go either way. I know it's easy to blame Abrams since his name is on the film, but doesn't mean he's truly the one to blame for every good or bad decision.

Well, if you look at it from the larger perspective, Kathleen Kennedy is to blame. She could have provided a plan for the complete trilogy.

Except we know she wouldn't have been able to do that. Since Iger forced release dates. TFA was a miracle it came together so quickly. They barely managed to get the one film together in time let alone plan a trilogy and Iger wanted it to be a MAY 2015 release not a December one. Kathy pushed back against it and we got dec.

I would not let the time constraint argument count. Put 3 creative Star Wars fans together for two weeks and you would get a usable treatment or a promising draft for a trilogy. And they already had Lucas treatments.

And not the rubbish stories that they ended up with.
