I got my tickets yesterday.  There were at least 400 people in front of me in line, so I waited from 10:04 to 11:17 before I concluded my purchase.  By then, only seats in the gallery were available in the quantity I wanted, but that's why I keep binoculars in the car.

But Pittsburgh is in a state with a scared governor who will only permit a small percentage of indoor seating, something like 15%.  So unless they want to move this to an outside venue where we can toss a beach ball, I'm okay to have my refund. 

 

Besides, Pittsburgh makes me drunk and then it rains.

Lazily repeating a post I just did on FSM, but...

 

Quite an impressive (and fully deserved) raft of events, but this one in particular stood out for me as Manfred Honeck is one of my favourite contemporary conductors and the Pittsburgh Symphony (PSO) is a terrific orchestra. It's almost a shame that JW is conducting half of it as I'd love to hear Honeck conducting some of JW's film music. I wonder if this will get a recording as the PSO has its own label and has done a fair number of extremely well performed, recorded and produced albums.

Hi all.  My 14yo son is a huge JW fan, and his birthday/Christmas gift this year is a trip to Pittsburgh to see this performance.  We are flying in from Louisiana (his first time to fly!), and it's a really big deal for us.  Do y'all have any suggestions as to how we could possibly interact with Mr. Williams before or after the performance, maybe to get one of his CDs signed, or a maybe a photo, or just a quick "hello"?  

 

I'm familiar with Broadway touring shows, and I know the artists for those typically do a "stage door" thing where they come out and sign autographs, but I'm totally new to the symphony world.  Any ideas or suggestions would be wonderful!

As Jay said, it just doesn’t happen anymore, given his age and the fact that we are still in a pandemic.  It’s a very nice thing you’re doing for your son. I will be there at this concert too.  So although you may be disappointed that autographs or meet and greets are completely out of the question, live in the moment and realize how lucky we are. Enjoy the opportunity and consider yourself so fortunate to even be able to attend.  It’s quite miraculous to me that the Maestro is doing so many concerts in such a short period of time.

Me neither.  I was stupid not to pursue Carnegie Hall last week.  I was on Long Island and could’ve made it, but I just wasn’t using my brain when tickets were available.  By the time more tickets popped up, I’d already committed to Pittsburgh.

Another great concert! Williams was missed during the first half, though learning he was above in a box seat before Across the Stars was cool, and turning to see him listening to his own theme as a fellow audience member was surreal. Anne-Sophie also made note that she recalled the theme being  from Episode II: Attack of the Clones - my influence? lol

 

Second half with the maestro himself was spectacular as always. He again ended with The Imperial March, which makes me wonder why he didn’t do it in Philly.

I figured he was somewhere in the audience, I was looking around for him.  So cool to realize he was right upstairs from me.  If my seats were a couple more to my left I wouldn’t have been able to see him sitting up there.

The best concert experience I have ever been to. Splurging on the seats was worth the close-up view of John Williams. The more expensive seats were also much more comfortable than the balcony seats I had on earlier concerts. The performances were incredible, and the Violin Concerto no. 2 is an improvement over the first violin concerto. Can't wait to own the Pittsburgh Symphony SACD of this concert.

Actually she said it was from “Attack of the Clones.. Or Something.”

 

How lovely to hear her say she was introduced to JW through Star Wars in 78 without looking down on it.   For some reason I find it comforting and validating that a virtuoso musician can simultaneously find value in a concerto written for her and a popular score written for commercial entertainment.   Johnny has earned acceptance and reverence  for all his modes and voices, from serious musicians and casual listeners.  Not that we didn’t already know that, but the short reel of musicians in the orchestra expressing similar exposure to JW was another nice reminder that he has bridged some mighty gaps and eroded vast amounts of snobbery. 
 

It’s been a good 20+ years since I’ve seen JW Live.  I can’t quite articulate in words how transported I was for the entire program.  I’d forgotten how different it is live, even compared to the modern Blu ray concerts DG has blessed us with.   John himself looked and sounded terrific, and is an inspiration to all of us to keep doing what we love to stay healthy.  It’s astonishing that he is able to physically do what he does.

 

The program was excellent and well crafted. The performances were solid and the acoustics were splendid. 
 

personally, I was of course overwhelmed with emotion.  JW was 40 the year I was born, and I can’t recall much of my life without his music.  The crescendo from CE3K gave me a good tear in my eye and I was pretty much soaring for all of the encores.  
 

I love that JW is doing what he enjoys and pursuing more concertos and non-film work.  It’s a new phase I’m happy to explore. He’s given us everything and owes us nothing, yet he continues to give more. 

 

 Bravo, Maestro!

 

oh, and I wish people could learn to sit still during quiet moments and truly listen.
