Hlao-roo 388
Hey everyone, I hope all has been well here recently; I haven't been checking in that often. Hopefully, Neil is finding his new moderating duties perfectly captivating. I was wondering if there were any Houstonians, or Texans, or travelers, interested in Rachel Portman's new opera, an adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic The Little Prince. Surprisingly, Houston Grand Opera is treating it to its world premiere (imagine that in Houston), and, for the first time (in a while), I just might go to the opera. Hey, it's even in English! (Hey, English may be ugly or unwieldy, but at least it's got comprehensibility going for it for most Americans.)I heard excerpts from it on NPR, and Portman's trademark spritely lyricism seems to be serving it well (and with voices, her music sounds more fresh and livelier than it has in awhile, Nicholas Nickleby being the strongest indication yet of her stylistic limitations).Anyway, if any of you are going to be in town during June, I encourage you to give this production a look. Yoda Longbottom 0
I have heard about the opera but don't know much on this issue. I must have written this first sentence to make my post look less off-topic.Alan, I'm pleased to see you loom up again! If only you appear around a little more often just this one sole post, my top ten poster... As for English language, yet another off-topic remark, I have Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf with both Russian and English narration and English is far more songful to my ears, so ironically I prefer its language adaptation over the original lyrics.I don't seek Portman's works way too often (my friend's girl has 6 soundtracks that she lent me so I heard these few), but just for curiosity I will try to get to hear the opera for how she was capable to cope with something of which John Williams himself speaks with high respect and regards to it as a demanding and labor work. Operas are hardest thing to do.Roman.-)
Hector J. Guzman 1
And that brings us to John Williams, and I wonder what has happened to Domingo's commisiond opera. Is he working secretly on it? Is he really not working on it? I hope he does, and for the theme of the opera I remember reading that it was being kept a sort of secret. I wonder what kind of story he might be doing.
