Kühni 485
Eau de Contrarian, I offer: FotR: Prologue - One Ring To Rule Them All / Give Up The Halfling / Parth Galen T2T: Night Camp / The Breach of the Deeping Wall / Theoden Rides Forth RotK: The Palantir / The Battle of the Pelennor Fields / For Frodo Chen G. and Smaug The Iron
Jay 37,323
I dunno man, Khazad-dûm is like the quintessential action track of the entire trilogy. And Prologue is amazing of course, but largely features the Nazgul chant for action material, something already covered by Give Up The Halfling Chen G.

gkgyver 1,645
I'm not sure I would call anything in the scores "action music". Even with something like Khazad-Dum, it's weighty drama more than action. Some Hobbit cues are leaning more towards what I'd call action music. Richard Penna 3,676
I think the two 'classic' action pieces from the trilogy are Khazad-dum and the Shelob material. The orchestration in the latter is crazy, although I do think the presentation is better on the OST, as it feels tighter.

Jay 37,323
It was incredibly tough to pick only three from ROTK! I really like the Shelob action material though, especially because it's distinct from all the other action music in the trilogy; If limiting to 3 per film, I felt it had to be represented! gkgyver 1,645
I swear each and every time I listen to Return Of The King, I find myself bewildered how a single person can write one iconic piece after the other with almost no down time in between and with all of them being on equal footing. Even Williams' best don't have that kind of ratio within a single film.

Oh man, the first minute of Dernhelm in Battle is top quality.
