What's your favourite score composed by a European composer for a European film?

I guess you're referring to The Mission, by The Ennio Morricone. :)

Yes, but the Italian title (the one used by Morricone) is "Mission"... I was being philologically correct!

(It was also an attempt to avoid confusion with the piece by JW called "The Mission").

GB isn't EUROPE. Brexit or no.

The continental countries speak non- English and have self contained film industries.

Dr. No was financed by UA. Broccolli and Salzman are Americans

If you read the title of the thread carefully, you'll realize that it doesn't say continental Europe. ;)

Sure, but they made their films in the UK.

I'm sorry, John Williams isn't a European composer. ;)

I don't think talking about James Bond or Harry Potter scores are in the spirit of what this thread is about.  Those are Hollywood films.

HP sure, but Bond is more of a gray area, I'd say.

Brexit applies to the EU, not to the British Isles leaving the Eurasian landmass.

Nobody asked about the language. And if they did, how do you decide that English is the one language that makes a film non-European? Also, several European countries do have English as one of their official languages.

You Americans and your simplified views of Europe. ;)

Btw, do you put on a DVD and take a picture with your phone each time you want to post a "meme"?

Yeah.

You have a problem with that?

...also, Ireland's primary language is English, and they *are* part of the EU.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is still part of Europe, geographically.

It certainly was in Europe politically, up until January just gone.

DIVA qualifies because:

Non-English speaking cast.

Indigenous crew and financing.

Made for a Euro audience

If you require all contributions to a European film to be strictly from Europe/Europeans, there won't be that many films left to talk about. That's probably why the Council of Europe came up with the following point system in order to qualify:

The criteria[2] whereby a film qualifies as European are based upon the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-production, Appendix II, issued by the Council of Europe. This definition might be extended for Israeli and Palestinian works and nationalities. A cinematographic work qualifies as European if it achieves at least 16 points (out of 21).

The European Film Academy uses a lower minimum of 13 points.

European elements Weighting Points
Creative group
Director 4
Script writer 3
Composer 1
Performing group
First role 3
Second role 2
Third role 1
Technical craft group
Head of Department – cinematography 1
Head of Department – sound 1
Head of Department – picture editing 1
Head of Department – production or costume design 1

Who cares what the so- called " European Film Academy" thinks!

I am the one who decides!

The only ding is that the absolutely outrageously beautiful love theme was not composed for this film. It was from a prior symphony that he wrote.

So the most memorable music from the film, the music that everyone remembers and wants to buy, is not written for the film.

But still, I agree it is a great score. I might not call it his best but one of his best for sure. It also works very well in the movie.

Captain Blood. Austro-Hungarian composer, Austro-Hungarian director, Italian-English writer (of the novel), Japanese-born British female lead, British antagonist. Never mind the Australian star.

Isn't it technically an American production, since, according to the director, Columbia Pictures co-financed it?

I already expressed my contempt for this so-called ' academy'😉

They don't take into account the finance and distribution .
