WilliamsStarShip2282 308
Nicest person on earth, if you're not an asshole. I saw him have to sneak out a side entrance of Symphony Hall in Boston once to get away from some people, and some woman tried ti get into his car. Another time I he was being followed by some creeps from his hotel and his driver did some crazy driving pulling into Symphony Hall while these creeps sped away and the cops followed them. Because that's how I met him briefly (but it left a big impression nonetheless) after the concert at the Barbican in 1996. He was very, very sweet, friendly, and amazing to talk to for those couple of sentences. *sigh* Your story happened to me after the "Goldsmith at 70" concert in Edinburgh in 1999 - we waited and had fun at the artist's entrance after the concert, since he was known to get in contact with his fans, even more so than John Williams at the time - little did we know that he returned directly to his hotel that night to continue working (!) on The Mummy. Popular Post Thornhill 19
I had the good fortune to have met him twice. Once backstage at the Hollywood Bowl ... and once at a Sony signing event at - of all places - Costco (with Yo Yo Ma!)!! JW couldn't have been nicer. It was his birthday that day, and everyone in line all sang him 'Happy Birthday' when he arrived to sit at the signing table. At the Costco event, I got him to sign my DRACULA LP. JW even made a comment of surprise when he saw it, as though he had kind of forgotten about that film, This was some years ago as now he plays a DRACULA piece in his concerts, from time to time. Yes, he's figured in a number of my dreams, per this ol' FSM thread: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=1123&forumID=1&archive=0 I've never met John Williams, but I've been pretty darn close. Not at Hollywood Bowl in 2012 (too far away from the stage!), but in Boston in 2014. Both outside the artist entrance, as well as just 2-3 meters from the stage during the concert. At the end of said concert, I - as the only person in the crowd - gave him a thumbs up. He saw me, we locked eyes and he gave me a thumbs up back. That's the closest I'll ever get, I guess. Popular Post Marian Schedenig 8,191
All this talk of dreams reminds me of the time when Jerry Goldsmith came to visit my parents, and before going to say hello, I wanted to grab a CD from my collection for him to sign, but the shelf collapsed and buried me in CDs, and by the time I got free and had found a Goldsmith CD, he'd already left again. I wrote about it in a thread similar to this before, but basically he came to conduct the USC Symphony and I was friends with the musicians and in the composition school so skipped class to hang out at the rehearsals and back stage with them. He was working with the orchestra for around five days and I attended every rehearsal and sat on stage sometimes too. At first, he was very intimidating to me, he didn't mean to be, was just very focused. For example, if the rehearsal was at 10am, he was in his trailer until 10:00 and then walked straight to stage. No chit chat, no tuning (they were tuned at 9:59 to be ready by 10. I was backstage and said hi the first day, he said hi and was immediately on stage, didn't chat. My nerves calmed as the days went on and I realized he isn't a demigod but was quite human, very modest but extremely professional and on his game. He worked the orchestra just like every other orchestra such as the LSO or LA Phil, or whoever. The last day, he was most relaxed and mingled. He answered questions, took pictures, seemed relaxed. He even gave us career advice. A true pro and a gentleman. I wrote a lot more specifics whenever this topic came up before and posted pics I took. Will have to look for that. crocodile 8,000
I also had several dream encounters with the maestro. One in particular comes to mind. I've met him in a crowd of people on some pier (or something like that). He was extremely friendly and polite, as you can imagine, but he was constantly looking around distracted. It took me a moment to realise that he was cruising for bearded bear-type men in the area and I was interrupting him with my needy geekiness. It's one of these dreams that seem perfectly normal and I was very happy to meet the man...but only when I woke up it suddenly felt strange to me that there was this guy there that was playing with JW's nipples while we were discussing the possibility of releasing the expanded Star Wars sets. 😂 Needless to say, I wasn't sure how to feel when I woke up. Popular Post rpvee 805
I’ve been lucky to meet him and get signatures several times, and also some pictures. The first time (top left) was with guys I didn’t (and still don’t) know because Williams was in a hurry, so we did a group photo. Second time (bottom left) was taken early, so we weren’t ready for the pic and thus looked bewildered. Third time (top right) is golden, and I even got it signed at another meeting. These were all from when he used to be more interactive at the Boston concerts. In more recent years (aka my adulthood and not having a teenager haircut), I haven’t been as lucky, as much as I’d love to have a new picture with him. Still, I don’t take any of my high school-era Williams experiences for granted! He’s always been an incredibly kind man, very gentle and attentive.
