Howard Shore: Favourite non-middle-earth music track

For the first 20 years of my film music fandom, I didn't like Howard Shore at all (except maybe the LOTR stuff). Especially not those droning Cronenberg affairs. But over the last decade or so, I've come to appreciate him more. At the moment, I have three non-middle earth Shores in my iTunes collection that I quite like - MAPS TO THE STARS, ROSEWATER and THE SONG OF NAMES. But I've obviously heard a great deal more over the years, and there are some things I would like to "re-acquire", so to speak - mostly more tonal stuff like MRS. DOUBTFIRE, LOOKING FOR RICHARD and the like. And then I'm set to re-evaluate the Cronenberg stuff.

The official Howard Shore thread is a good resource for this.

Some of my favourite non-Middle Earth music:

Add to the list: The Fly, Eastern Promises, Edge of Darkness, etc etc

I happen to think his work on The Silence of the Lambs is wonderful.

Not just the unobtrusive minimalism and effortlessness with which he sets-up an eerie atmosphere (the ending is not a bad example of this), but also the lyricism of the writing for Clarice.

Marvellous.

I really like Eastern Promises. It has some exquisite violin solos, and works tremendously well in the movie.

Highlight track, please!

Silence of the Lambs is a very memorable score, but I found it to be overly intrusive during my recent rewatch of the film. It's inescapably 90s [crime] thriller music, which is either good or bad, depending on one's sensibilities. But it is good music.

It's good, although he's ripping off Puccini a bit. :)

Yeah? So? A certain J. Williams esq. rips-off Holst, Korngold, Vaughan Williams, and Walton...in the same score

Maybe Shore likes the way Puccini lays down a tune?

collector's edition the Ed Wood score, for a reasonable price? It seems.to be sold out everywhere.

?????

It was reissued but I don't think it has that much different.

Before Amoeba closed their retail store,  they had it.

Try Amoeba.com

The Fly.  Can’t name a track, I don’t look at track names or numbers while I’m listening to something.

Finally someone who does the same as me! I'm also terrible at track titles; it's just one consecutive listen from start to finish.

It's not there. I've seen it available digitally, but what's the point of a collector's edition I can't collect? :pat:

Anybody knows where I can buy a new copy of the collector's edition the Ed Wood score, for a reasonable price? It seems.to be sold out everywhere.

It's OOP so you won't find it for a "reasonable" price anywhere.

Well, I suppose "reasonable" is in the eye of the beholder.  For example, it's $93 on Amazon US.  Is that reasonable to you?
