They gave us their numerals, so we're able to know which Episode of Star Wars we're watching.

Thankfully it went better than this one -

I have a Masters in Classics.   I did my dissertation on divination in the lives of the Caesars.

Basically every facet of human life in the Western world is informed by Graeco-Roman (and even Byzantine) ideas and developments.

Unfortunately.😞

Actually, it appears the Ancient Romans stole everything they knew from these guys ...

Roman culture was steeped in Greek influence. But they certainly pushed Greek culture and sciences into the next step through their sheer might and organizational prowess, and that counts for something. The scale of Rome (and later Byzantium) was entirely foreign to Classical Greece or to Mycenae and the Minoans.

Also, how is that a Mediterranean culture like Minoan crete gets counted as "Europe's first advanced civilization"? They were living within a manifestly Mediterranean/Middle Eastern sphere of influence, having dealing with the Egyptian and Hittites rather than anyone even remotely Germanic. Same, for the most part, with classical Greece. Alexander didn't invade the Caucasus: he invaded Asia.

Its an island in the Mediterranean.

You can't apply modern borders to antiquity. What you can do is look at what historical environment the Minoans grew out of and existed in, and it was in a Mediterranean one. They didn't have dealing with the people of Britannia and Gaul: they had dealings with the Pharaohs and the Hittites in Asia Minor. They're more akin to the Philistines (believed to have originated from Crete shortly thereafter) than they are to Vercingetorix or even Alexander the Great.

Well, if you think it isn't European then historians must have it wrong.

We have dealings with China. Does that mean we're no longer European?

Is it just me, or ... considering what's happened to this building, does the paintwork look suspiciously vibrant?
